Title: Canada's Frappr

bweezy - November 2, 2005 06:41 PM (GMT)
I started a Frappr page for the region: http://www.frappr.com/nscanada

Essentially, anyone can put their name and location. When you click on that person's "find them" link, the map shows you where they are in the world. You can add pictures on an optional basis.

I'm not sure if this will be popular or not, but I thought it might be a good way to conceptualize where we all are in relation to each other. (Currently there does not appear to be an option to place a "pin" in all areas of the map where people currently reside all at once - I think that would be cool, but they haven't implemented that feature yet).

I'm currently the admin (I have the password). Cabinet can discuss if they want someone in government to overtake the admin function. I'll then pm the password to them and the appointed person can then take over on behalf of the region.

bweezy - November 2, 2005 06:45 PM (GMT)
Ignore what I said about the pushpins - they do show up - you have to refresh your browser each time you visit, and the new pushpins will show up.

btw, I made Winnipeg the Centre of the map, given that Winnipeg is close to the geographical centre of teh continent. Whoever takes over as admin can feel free to change that setting.

Kewel idea barrister! I'm in. B)

bweezy - November 2, 2005 06:59 PM (GMT)
Oh, and we should probably pin this somewhere, so that new users down the line know about it (i.e., it doesn't get burried under 100 other threads)

Bamada - November 2, 2005 07:13 PM (GMT)
I'm there :)

Ess - November 2, 2005 07:19 PM (GMT)
Me, too! :D

hudson bay - November 2, 2005 08:49 PM (GMT)
Now Hudson Bay is on the Map twice! :P

Redundancies - November 2, 2005 08:53 PM (GMT)
I see Red...

bweezy - November 3, 2005 02:49 PM (GMT)
Hmm. More rl Americans listed than any other nation, including Canada. I tend to forget how diverse a group we are.

hudson bay - November 3, 2005 02:53 PM (GMT)
Good work Bweezy. Should be real cool once we get even more of the regulars on the map.

You know me - if there is a cheap marketing gimmick for the region, I'll exploit it for all its worth...

Checkers McDog - November 3, 2005 04:40 PM (GMT)
I'm on the map now :D . It couldn't find Markham, ON...so I'm in Toronto :P

Pinned! ^_^

Turns out I may be doing some work in Toronto soon, so maybe I'll be able to meet up with a few of you (don't know my schedule yet).

I'm on there.

Yeah, I feel sorry for your pushpin - all by itself with no one to play with ^_^

hudson bay - November 3, 2005 05:49 PM (GMT)
Carb and AL can take care of that for him. :)

Beaver-Country-Canada - November 3, 2005 07:50 PM (GMT)
I'm on there!

the number 17 - November 3, 2005 08:25 PM (GMT)
all concerned should know that the map misplaced me by about three blocks.

locate the block centered between streets houston, prince, bowery, and elizabeth. find the southwest corner of houston and bowery. count 9 buildings down in the satellite feed, and thats me.

Parrrrtay - November 3, 2005 09:26 PM (GMT)
I'm THERE!
But the location is way off
Anyway to edit it?

I'm now on there, albeit a couple of miles out for some reason. Stupid Google Maps...

The FAQs state they won't let you edit it - they don't want exact locations to protect the privacy of the person who posted their information.

Omnivorous - November 3, 2005 09:40 PM (GMT)
But (for me) 8 miles? Is that really acceptable?

It's based on zip code for the US and city name for non-us so it's not going to be exact down to your street. (which you might not want anyway ;) )

Omnivorous - November 3, 2005 09:43 PM (GMT)
Google Maps works fine for me (which it appears to be based on). The postcode should be right over my house.

Checkers McDog - November 3, 2005 09:49 PM (GMT)
Hey....how come Toronto for 420 is at Bay & Gerrard, and I'm stuck all the way down by the Gardiner? <_<

:P

I would think that yours is based on the city name - much more imprecise that postal code.

So, I was just looking at some of the satellite images of where people's pushpin's ended up.....

It appears as though bweezy lives in a tree, Bamada's right on the green of a golf course, Ess is right on the water's edge, HB's in the middle of a road, Daemon's on a boat, and I'm across the street from the Skydome. :D

Bamada - November 4, 2005 12:54 AM (GMT)
I know, sometimes im just walking around my house and a gold ball will just smack me right in the face! I think I've lost tons of brain cells that way!

EDIT: to get to me is a good few miles, go down overbrook towards cherokee, right on cherokee, left on overcrest, left at brookwood, right on SOUTH brookwood (pass my elementary school!) right on overton, right on river ridge circle, I'm at the very end. :)

Oddly enough, the oval track right near that tree is where I went to high school. (I don't live anywhere near there now, but its odd that it placed me so close to a familiar place)

j delight - November 4, 2005 02:36 AM (GMT)
Ew.... it shows me living next door to my ex's best friend. EW!!!

*runs to the bathroom and washes eyes*

Beaver-Country-Canada - November 4, 2005 03:06 AM (GMT)
Gotta go north some to get to me -- looks like I live by a major street!

That would suck

If you think that's far off....To get to me, you'd have to go south from my pushpin, get on the Gardiner Expressway East, then go north on the Don Valley Parkway/404 for a good 20-30 kms, then take the Hwy. 7 or 16th Ave. exit in Markham. I live right by what appears to be a giant grey 'X'. (It's actually the runways at Buttonville Airport).

Bamada - November 4, 2005 05:07 AM (GMT)
wow, big zip code.

Look, I'm a little down on my luck right now. This is the best place that I can afford!

Don't make fun.

Kronemonsteland and co. - November 4, 2005 06:29 AM (GMT)
Well, according to this I live on the train tracks. To get where I live you have to get on to City Road, got to the end and turn right on to Albany Road, take the 7th left, and follow that road up to the intersection(is that the right word?) with Boelyn Walk.Head back a nanometer or two, and go to the right side of the road. You'll be right outside my flat then.

hudson bay - November 4, 2005 11:45 AM (GMT)
I do live in the middle of the road (just like my politics).

* Hey you, slow down *

I added a logo so that our Frappr looks a little more customized. If someone has an alternate they'd like to propose, feel free to share it with me.

Jack_Tarr - November 4, 2005 05:56 PM (GMT)
Google put me in the right town, but probably about 3 miles from where I actually am. If anyone cares, I'm at:

44:22.596

69:35.756

Beaver-Country-Canada - November 4, 2005 08:02 PM (GMT)
Seeing as everyone else is posting how to get to them...

Go north on Memorial Drive, West on Crowchild Trail, North on Shaganappi Trail, West on Dalhousie Drive, Right onto Dalton Drive, and take the second left, and the first (and only) right.

55 Dalton Bay NW! Now, somebody try it and see if it actually works....
