Title: Gone Skydiving

saskatoon saskatchewan - August 19, 2005 12:57 PM (GMT)
This is just to let everyone know, that this weekend i'll be in Edmonton Skydiving. Now, in theory I won't get hurt(or get pwned) however, if I don't respond to this post by Tuesday night, i'd be slightly worried. Anyways, have a good weekend everybody. :D

I am not...just don't see the need to jump from a perfectly good airplane.....

Hope you have happy landings! B)

Jack_Tarr - August 19, 2005 04:26 PM (GMT)
I jumped out of a properly functioning airplane ONCE! In fact I payed good money to do so. The 3 + - seconds it took the static line to deploy my chute were the longest 3 seconds of my life. (followed by whatever number of seconds it took me to reach the ground and do a tuck and roll). Right, there was no such thing as a modern sports chute back then.

In any event SS, I hope you enjoy it. I will stick to more sane adrenaline rushes like huricanes and rogue waves.

And just remember, more rednecks die after uttering the following sentence than any othe word combination.

Hey yawl, watch this!!!!!

 @ JT

Have fun SS! Tell us all about it so we don't have to go do it ourselves! :P

Never saw the point in jumping out of a perfectly good airplane myself, either.

Have a good time anyway, SS.

Bamada - August 20, 2005 05:32 PM (GMT)
Oh that's going to be sooo much fun! I definetly want to do that one day. (And I have been known to say hey ya'll watch this and then get hurt. I have a very high tolerance for pain and I'm not afraid of anything but spiders, so it gets me in trouble sometimes)

saskatoon saskatchewan - August 21, 2005 05:37 AM (GMT)
well, i'm alive, but I don't have much time, but simply put, skydiving today was the greatest moment of my tiny existence as a human being. when I have more time next week, I'll let you all know the details.

Ess - August 21, 2005 12:55 PM (GMT)
Glad to see you back in one piece, SS! :D

well, i'm alive, but I don't have much time...

What have you been diagnosed with? Is that why you're skydiving?

Seriously, glad to have you back with nothing broken.

Almonaster - August 21, 2005 11:37 PM (GMT)
Look forward to hearing all about it!

saskatoon saskatchewan - August 23, 2005 10:39 PM (GMT)
Well, I guess I owe y'all a story of my skydiving trip. Well here goes:

First, getting up at 6:00 to leave by 7:00 really sucked but alas, for this I was willing to get up earlier than I would for work. IN any case, by seven o'clock I had all the other memebers of the group in which I was going with. So, we get there by eightish and immediatley my impression is, we're going skydiving here? Considering that we had to take a crap gravel road to get out there(must be the last one left in Alberta) and the place didn't seem very, uh organized we still went into the main office area and began registering. I found out that I weigh much more than i had realized(more than twenty five pounds, our scale at home must be crap)

Finally, class was in session taught by an instructor named Jeff. Jeff seemed like a pretty good guy and he knew what he was talking about. By the end of the mourning session, we seemed to have the routine down pretty good. ( Crawl out, look up, and let go when the instructor says "Go". Then, Arch-thousand, two thousand, three thousand, four thousand, five thousand, Check canopy, flight check and that's it's for getting out there, landing, was a different story). The Afternoon was different. During the afternoon, we saw basically all the really bad emergencies happen. And here was were people(ie, me) started getting quite nervous. Jeez, that could happen to me? I dunno about this skydiving thing.

After all this, the test was finally given, and frankly, it scared me even more, as it was the easiest test i've written, and i've written some easy tests.(Political studies 111 comes to mind) After getting a 100% on the test, it was just wait for your flight to be called.

So, my name gets called with a bunch of people I really don't know. We got suited up, and then the instructor coming with us, Monique, went over everything quickly with us as we waited for the plane to return. And boy, those things are pretty damn hot, and weight what feels like a million pounds. Finally on the plane, and I had to be the first one out as I weighed the most. So, up and up we go and so the anxiety in the little Cessna increased.

Once at 3500 feet, the door pops open and Monique looks at me and says, "Ready?" and I looked right back her and said, "Hell no, but I paid good money so i'm getting my ass out there anyways". I think she was a little taken aback by that. Ok, I start climbing out as i've done probably dozens of time on the ground. Climb out, and it begins, "Ready?" "Ready!" "Go!"

And then, it's a bit of a blur for the first six seconds, as, I believe I experienced some sensory overload. All I remember for that is that I didn't count as practice(arch-thousand, two thousand, etc.) so, I just kinda guesstimated when it would be time for the canopy to open. After what I figured was about six seconds, I looked up as I was taught. Sure enough, no problems there so, I proceeded with flight check. Over the one way radio I hear, "Jumper One, welcome to the world of skydiving". Intially, anxiety was quite heavy for me, but eventually the rational mind took over. "Ok, now that you've had your panic, we'll take it from here". And then, it occured to me, I'm one of a few people on the face of the planet who've actually been crazy(or stupid perhaps) enough to jump out of an airplane.

Really, from 3500 feet, the planet looks quite beautiful, and after the intially panic I experienced, an overwhelming sense of calm came over me. I just kinda casually, watched all that was going on the surface, people around the buildings, the farmer cuttting his hay, etc. Boy, it's just very relaxing to watch from that high up. I dunno why, but yeah, the beauty just helped me chill, and for the most part remember all my training for what i'm suppose to do in the air.

I didn't experience any problems and after about five to seven minutes I was back on the ground, and frankly, a bit excited. At the time all I could think about was doing it all over again, the thrill really took hold of me, and I did what I normally do when I get that pumped, I laughed. I wrapped up my canopy and grinned pretty much the rest of the day, as I oversaw the conclusion of my skydive. It was, without a doubt, the greatest experience of my short existence on this planet. I hope to do it again as soon as possible.

Sounds great, SS! Glad you enjoyed yourself so much! ^_^

Jack_Tarr - August 24, 2005 03:24 PM (GMT)
Parts of your story bring back memories. The terrifying parts.
Of course, we didn't have canopies, we had the old fashioned round parachutes. Not that it would have mattered. Glad you enjoyed it.

I jumped out of an airplane once. Fortunately, it was sitting on the deck of an aircraft carrier and I landed on my feet about 6 feet below....
