Title: Jump the Shark
Description: favourite tv episodes
bweezy - July 19, 2005 01:45 PM (GMT)
I went to a website called "jump the shark" awhile back. The site is a discussion forum about when certain tv shows hit their prime, and what the best show on a tv series was.
I thought it might be a good thread to start here, since I'm pretty sure we all watch tv.
I'll start with a show that most everyone has watched - the Simpsons.
Although the episode where the Simpsons came to Winnipeg has a special place in my heart, my favourite episode is the one where Homer becomes the union leader and fights for a Dental Plan so Lisa can get braces that don't rust. It also featured the crazy dentist who showed Ralph Wiggum "The Big Book of British Smiles". Very funny stuff.
Feel free to add your favouirte Simpsons episode, or suggest other tv shows for discussion.

"Jump the shark"... a "Happy Days" reference?

I'd love to contribute to that discussion, but I have never even heard of any of those tv shows (but then again, I only had four channels for a four year span earlier this century- I must have missed a lot of good tv)

I've seen that Birdman episode, but it's been a long time--all I remember about it is the threat levels. (we're elevating to "the cover of Moving Pictures"!)
I can't think of what would be the "peak" Simpsons episode for me, but I do remember they had a couch gag where they literally jumped over sharks on waterskis (and Homer promptly lost his shins to the predators)

Favourite Simpsons Episode..... I'd have to say either Hank Scorpio or the one with Simon Cowell getting punched in the face. :D
Daemon - July 19, 2005 02:54 PM (GMT)
Ha. I don't have cable, so I don't really watch common TV.
Birdman is on Adult Swim on the Cartoon Network, it's kind of... random.
Cowboy Bebop is an anime Space Western. I like some anime, but generally only the kind that is good in and of itself. I find a lot of people these days like anime just for being anime.
Firefly is also a space western. It was on Fox for a while before being cancelled, but a movie called "Serenity" is being release that falls at the end of the chronology. I'm looking forward to it.
Oilers Fans - July 19, 2005 03:04 PM (GMT)
Now, you see, the one reason I had never heard of any of those is that I only have 4 channels and one is French.
bweezy - July 19, 2005 03:22 PM (GMT)
So then, unless we start talking about
The Beachcombers or
The Littlest Hobo, you'll have very little to contribute...
(btw, my favourite beachcombers episode was the one where Nick's body was taken over by an alien. The one where Relic impersonated Rene Levesque is a close second).

I forgot about that. Is the UK the only nation on earth that requires a licence to operate a television set?
Carbanousa - July 19, 2005 04:07 PM (GMT)
Probably - and I blame the BBC (British Boradcasting Corporation). It's only paid to BBC as it's a public corporation for monetary reasons. The other stations accrue their monies through advertisements but, by default, you have to buy the license even if you don't view BBC programmes.
I'm not sure how a digital box would work, as techincally you're not recieving any terrestrial transmission. Even so, I found my brain far more active and alert without television.

Hmm. In Canada, the CBC is funded through advertising and taxpayer funds. in the US, PBS is funded through a few Government Grants and "Support from Viewers Like You".
But I digress.

I don't really watch too much tv, besides The Simpsons, Friends, and late night talk shows. Which is suprising considering I currently have access to over 500 channels....
moomoo - July 19, 2005 04:58 PM (GMT)
I barely watch any TV anymore, but I watch a TON of TV shows on DVD. I'm spoiled and used to not having any commercials. Plus I tend to not get sucked into most TV shows until at least a year after they've gone off the air.

The question is do you have 500 sets to watch them all though...

Dear God, I'd never leave the house! I only have 75 channels or so and really only watch a handful of them regularly--but I know there are soe premium channels that would be added to that list if I had them...
I always have people tell me about TV shows that they really like and think I should watch. I get to a point, though, where I watch enough TV as it is--adding these new shows to stuff I already watch would cement me to the sofa 24/7. And don't even get me started on the NHL's "Center Ice" package which shows every out-of-town game--my friends would be like "Hey, let's go out" and I'd be all "I'm watching hockey!"
Oh, and don't get me started on DVR. My friends swear by it but I'm like, there's no way I'd ever get around to watching everything I'd end up recording. I'd have 100 hours of programming within the week.
bweezy - July 19, 2005 06:01 PM (GMT)
I am subscribed to a digital tv service that offers a bunch of "theme groups" in groups of 3-8 channels. That way, even though I "only" have 50 channels, I only get the ones I watch (with the exception of the channels automatically included on the "basic" package, which include seldom watched stations such as the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network, Canadian Parliamentary Television, The Canadian Home Shopping Channel and Vision TV).

I used to watch that whenever I had a day off from school in the mid to late 1980's - it was good television. I've only watched it once since then (when Chuck Cadman voted in favour of the budget amendment)

For Family Guy, I liked the episode where Peter coaches his neighbour (the one in the wheelchair) in "The Special People's Games".
Futurama - the Iron Chef episode.
Friends - I can't think of a favourite episode for sure, but the one where they mistakenly get free unlimited access to the porn channel is right up there.
70's Show - I like them all. The Marriage/Heart Attack episode was pretty good. I also liked the one where Donna and Forman's parents ingested "Special Brownies". That was classic.
Almonaster - July 19, 2005 09:57 PM (GMT)
I'm another one who doesn't watch TV. On the other hand, I do like the Beeb. Ad-free TV: ++good!
I also grew up without one, so I am only familiar with what was on in th 80's and 90's.
It took me a while to get into the Simpsons, but I'm definitely a fan now. There's still a lot I haven't seen, which is good - I always have the chance of seeing a new episode.
I think my fave was the one where Apu lost his job and moved in with the Simpsons. The world's first convenience store was hilarious.
Checkers McDog - July 20, 2005 12:36 AM (GMT)
It's too hard for me to pick a fav Simpsons episode....there's so many.
As for Friends, I love every episode where Rachel's father shows up (what a great character), and besides those, it would be the one where Joey's fridge breaks (and he tries to get the others to pay for it).

Another really good one, was when Joey bought the V Encolyopidea(sp?) to help him become more involved in discussions in the group.

My favorite episode of That 70's Show has to be the one where they see "Star Wars".
"Jedi Knight? More like Jedi Dumbass!"

Best South Park is when they do the Japeniese Animia and Butters gets a ninja star in his eye,I luagh the whole time watching that one.
Parrrrtay - July 20, 2005 10:59 AM (GMT)
South Park - Kenny on life support
...and any one of them with Jimmy in it.
Carbanousa - July 20, 2005 11:12 AM (GMT)
Black Books Season 2: The Entertainer.
It's the one where Manny picks up the Piano in a single evening to COnert Pianist standard. Bill Bailey absolutely rocksin that episode.  :hail:
Mr. B - July 20, 2005 12:28 PM (GMT)
I just found out about the licensing fee out your way carb. Yuck. I only have the little bunny ears myself, rarely watch the tube.
But wont miss the Simpson, I still think its brilliant despite brief lulls. As for favourite episodes, I'd have to give that some hard thought. Scorpio is a classic.... Jeez, to many to remember!
Glad to find another Futurama fan. Totally underrated it was! That episode with the whole cast of Star Trek! God I died! James Doohan refused for some obscure reason so they replaced Scotty with 'Welshy', frickin hillarious!
And the Zapper... "Comes crawling back like a bird on its belly, for some of that sweet, sweet candy...BAM!"
Other than that, I try to rent up some Python episodes when I can...
Redundancies - July 20, 2005 01:16 PM (GMT)
Futurama, to me, is like the Simpsons--so many good episodes I can't pick a favorite. In addition to the Star Trek episode, there was the Titanic parody, the Slurm factory episode, the "Married with Children" parody with Al the cyclops...
Daemon - July 20, 2005 01:32 PM (GMT)
I can't fully enjoy family guy, as it's such a blatant rip-off of the Simpsons.
There are some moment, but they are build with a scaffolding of LIES.
Jack_Tarr - July 20, 2005 02:27 PM (GMT)
Seinfeld...the one where the 4 of them bet on who can go the longest "without".
Everyone loves raymond... The one where Ray makes up the song that goes with the tune from take me out to the ball game.
Monty Python's Flying Circus...Any of Them.
South Park....The Devil and Saddam
Mr. B - July 20, 2005 03:48 PM (GMT)
I may have mentioned this before but I have a book of all the scripts for every Monty Python episode aired. Its actually funnier reading it than watching!
Beaver-Country-Canada - July 20, 2005 04:39 PM (GMT)
I would love to see all the Monty's, I've only seen the Grail and another one that I never actually did know the name of... but it was funny!
Fav. Recess: The Junglegym one
Fav. Star Trek Voyager: The one I just saw that I can't remember the name of it... hmm.
Fav. Star Trek TNG: I don't know if it was ever made into an actual episode (I could've swore I saw it once) but the book where Data was made into a human. Or the one where Deanna Troy is saved by a future Will Riker. Its a good book!
Don't really have a fav simpsons; they're all funny. Same with That 70's Show.
Anybody remember that old show CyberSix? I just saw it on Teletoon one Sunday, and just about flipped! It was my favourite show when I was younger -- now it seems kind of stupid, but still really cute!
I like my cartoons ^_^
