Title: The Coasting Schooner "Zen in the Wind II"
Description: A Vacation Unlike Any Other

Jack_Tarr - July 11, 2005 05:01 PM (GMT)
*Hangs the following sign on the Spot's bulletin board and posts another down by the village dock.*

NOW HIRING

The Good Ship Zen In The Wind Currently Has Openings For The Following men or women:

1st Mate (Position Filled by Mr B )

The mate is expected to maintain the appearance of the vessel from cleaning heads to painting the hull as well as sailing, navigation, general maintenance, work aloft, and marlinespike seamanship. The mate is also expected to learn the systems on the vessel and follow a preventative maintenance schedule.

Cook (Position Filled by Ess)

The cook is responsible for management of all galley operations from menu planning to purchasing, stowing, preparation and presentation. As such, organizational skills are crucial. The cook is also involved in on deck responsbilities including raising sails, raising anchor and running the yawl boat. Experience in a restaurant setting is helpful. All meals are prepared on a woodstove with no electrical food processing devices.

Deckhand/Mess Mate (Position Filled by hudson bay)

The deckhand/mess mate has many responsibilities including tasks on deck and tasks in the galley. The mess mate assists the cook prior to every meal with beverage and salad preparation and organizes dish washing. The mess mate is encouraged to assist in any aspect of sailing after galley responsibilities are completed.

Reservationist (Position Filled by FWC )

The reservationist is a land-based employee responsible for answering the phone, processing reservations, maintaining databases, handling ships store sales, handling docking lines for the schooner upon departure and arrival, as well as many other tasks. The ideal applicant will possess applicable computer and office experience.

Bunkie/Wench (Position Filled by parrrrtay)

The bunkie meets the boat between trips to clean and re-stock the cabins. This is a job for someone that lives locally and wishes to have a little extra spending money. The job takes three or four hours each time we return to the dock.

All positions require excellent people skills as you will be interacting closely with passengers on a constant basis. A positive attitude, strong back and a desire to learn what life ar sea was like in the late 1800s are all prerequisites.

Please see Jack Tarr at the Spot to apply.

hudson bay - July 11, 2005 05:12 PM (GMT)
I'd like to apply but I have a problem...

I would enjoy learning more about the operations of the vessel but I would expect that being 1st Mate would require experience. Do you have any openings for a general shiphand trainee?

Jack_Tarr - July 11, 2005 05:19 PM (GMT)
*Realizing he left a position off the poster, JT excuses himself and runs off to make the addition. Upon returning, he looks at HB and says.*

"You might consider the mess mate position HB. Its a tough job but you will have ample opportunity to learn the ship's opperation from scratch."

Magnate of The Albertan Empire - July 11, 2005 05:24 PM (GMT)
I'd like to join up. I'd like to start from the bottom and work my way up as well. Maybe start of as like a Scurvy Dog or something like that. Someone who just goes port to port, having promiscuous, unproteced sex with local women.

Parrrrtay - July 11, 2005 05:26 PM (GMT)
Drats....no wench needed!

*Looks at the application.* :eyebrow:

"Ahhh yes, I agree you should start at the bottom. Perhaps we could keel haul you but I' don't want to pison my barnicles. Perhaps the dept of transportation sanitation barges would be better suited to you. Good Day."

Is TV aware you are seeking this position? Or have you 2 had a falling out?

hudson bay - July 11, 2005 05:38 PM (GMT)
Ahh yes JT, I remember now how hard it is to be a part of a ship's crew without spending time in the galley :D Well count me in as a Deckhand/Galley slave.

As for ParrrrTay wouldn't the ship need some type of tour director? Someone to interact with the passengers without trying up the Captain's time.

That's great HB. Welcome aboard and remember, you will be working beside the most important person on the vessel. THE COOK!

Magnate of The Albertan Empire - July 11, 2005 05:48 PM (GMT)
Oh common, cant I even be a deck swaber?

Mr. B - July 14, 2005 07:41 PM (GMT)
Hey Hey! If the first mates position is stillin need of fillin', I'd be happy to oblige. My pirate connections should come in handy!

Judith Gap - July 14, 2005 08:35 PM (GMT)
JT, send me out to sea. If you'll teach me how to navigate by the stars, I'll work really cheap.

Ess - July 14, 2005 08:37 PM (GMT)
I am applying for the cook's position! :)

Mr. B - July 14, 2005 08:40 PM (GMT)
Looks like you got a good crew in application here JT. Lets get this boat filled, im anxious for our first trip!

hudson bay - July 14, 2005 10:53 PM (GMT)
Hey the Cap'in is a busy man, busy man. It's my understanding that he's out obtaining a few kegs of rum. We can hardly be expected to get underway without that now can we...

* puts a small pipe in his mouth and walks away with the a slight limp muttering "shiver me timbers" under his breath, wishing the rum would arrive soon *

Jack_Tarr - July 14, 2005 11:11 PM (GMT)
"Well, this is going to be quite a crew. I will start advertising for passengers. We still have a few things to do in preparation including deal with the annual Coast Guard inspection. We will haul out tomorrow and as soon as the hull passes inspection, we will paint the bottom and relaunch. In the mean time, Ess, you need to go shopping. Food for a week for 20 people if you will.

Mr B, there is a diagram in the dock house. Take hb and get the tops'l rigged if you will."

I'll go get our brochure printed and then I need to get our wench and show her what to do in the cabins." ;)

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh before I forget, you are all gonna have to do pee pee tests for the CG so if need be, get your hebs and start your purge."

Ess - July 14, 2005 11:17 PM (GMT)
*starts making up menus and shopping list*

hudson bay - July 14, 2005 11:40 PM (GMT)
Ess we'll be needing lots of fine wine to keep our guests happy -- Maybe you should be getting some extra just in case... ;)

Mr. B did he say "tops"?? * looks up and shields his eyes from the sun *

Oh Ess - that's a lot of food you have to get; I'm sure you'll be needing a hand...

What you talkin' bout? I be the cook, not the damn bartender! <_<

*mumbles under breath and gets back to making the menus*

hudson bay - July 14, 2005 11:53 PM (GMT)
* puts his cap in his hand and shuffles his feet a bit *

Yes Ms, my mistake. So, who do you think will be buying the wine eh?

And I sure would like to help you bring back the food, if I can....

Ess - July 14, 2005 11:54 PM (GMT)
According to the captain, it's BYOB. We supply the champagne. I'm trying to sweet talk the captain into making/bringing the selection. :D

I'd love some help bringing back the cook's supplies, kind sir! :)

hudson bay - July 15, 2005 12:06 AM (GMT)
Well I'm going below to fetch a bunch of rope so Mr. B can get started on the rigging. The minute you are ready to leave you come get me...

Hmm top of the rigging - oh my. Well at least we are in port and the boat won't be rocking all over the place. (or is it "ship", damn don't want to tick the Captain off on the first day of the job)

Upon reading the job description again, I see that hb is going to be busy peeling potatoes and doing dishes!

*Leaves note for crew*

"You will find that the passengers on these cruises love getting involved in the day to day operations of the schooner. You will find you'll have lots of volunteers to help with sails, cooking chores, dishes, anchor cranking, polishing brass etc. Make friends with the passengers. Its the best way to assure lots of help and gernerous tips."

Ess - July 16, 2005 09:30 PM (GMT)
I have a list, but was awaiting word on when we'll depart as we only have ice-boxes to store perishables.
