Title: Episode III
Description: am I the only one?
Mr. B - May 19, 2005 05:41 PM (GMT)
or have I missed the discussion? Did no one else catch the 12:01 screening last night?
Its ok, you can admit it. ...Carb? ...Red? or am I the only geek here? Well, I have an excuse, it was my birfday!
After I fully recover from the 3 hours sleep I got last night before work today, I will discuss fullly. But right now... meh. Not dissappointed, not thrilled. Looking forward to seeing it again though on dvd.
Glad to see Lucas pulled his head out of his ass and actually got someone to help with dialog and delivery, cause it sure made a difference. Of course there was the odd cheese, but a definite step up from the others.
Let me know what you thought once y'all seen it.
Carbanousa - May 19, 2005 05:46 PM (GMT)
I'll be watching the Saturday. I want a fairly empty theatre and hopefully by then the Novelty will have worn off most people, and more importantly - CHILDREN!, aren't they all?
The trailers have looked okay, and I'll pass judgement sometime Saturday morning :).
Mr. B - May 19, 2005 05:55 PM (GMT)
Wise my son.
But no kids at midnight. Just a crowd of irritating fan boys, cheering and applauding at every damn thing.
"Yay!!! R2 just did something funny! Woooooo!!!! You make me horny Lucas!!! "
Damn it, add that to the list of things that peev me off, who the hell claps during a movie? What the hell!?!?
Actually, I was kind of surprised that it was such a non-event. My crew showed up for the line at 6:00pm, but fearing 'uber-geek' was a contagious condition I made myself scarce until about 11:15. But when I arrived the place was very low-key, no lines, little costumes, etc. Thank the Maker!
Gawd, the next mid-twenty, living in his mom's basement, year old man I see walking around with a vader helmet and swinging a plastic lightsabre is going to feel the "force" of my fist in his gut.
Why do I put myself through this? Oh well.
I guess I'll wait to hear from you saturday Carb. I don't want to give away any parts of the intricate plot before you see it ;)
Carbanousa - May 19, 2005 05:59 PM (GMT)
I shall be dancing to the Cinema - all of about 100 metres away ;).

 *cough cough*
Nah, I'll wait till next week. Or the weekend. I don't want to have to deal with lines and crowded theatres.
Redundancies - May 19, 2005 06:08 PM (GMT)
Like Carb and Daemon, I'm waiting--I'm a big fan, but I somehow don't see the glamour in sitting around in line for hours before the show starts. I'll hold off until I can get into a show without showing up way ahead of time.
I gotta say, the trailers have looked awesome. God knows that when I saw the first one, I was pumped up to see the movie--although the trailer won't necessarily tell you if it's good, I took it as a good sign...

You guys need to work on your associates. Find some poor saps who think the whole ordeal is 'cool' and 'fun' and have them do all the dirty work for ya. I spent the 45 minutes before the movie across the parking lot quickly downing a few pints of Guinness. Made the whole night a little easier to take.
Man, I am a spineless bastard.
So I guess I should becareful and not give anything away for the rest of youse.
psssst.... Anakin becomes VADER.... heh, suckers...
Redundancies - May 19, 2005 06:55 PM (GMT)
Yeah, see, here's my problem--among the people I know, I'm the biggest Star Wars geek, so *I* would be the one most likely to be holding the place in line. I doubt I could get anyone else to do it.

He does?! Aw, man, that just spoiled the whole movie for me.
The North Cascades - May 19, 2005 09:16 PM (GMT)
I went to a 12:01 am screening with NO SW geeks. It should have been great. Then....
30 minutes in the film broke. Seriously. After about 5 minutes the manager gruffly announced that they would fix it in seconds. About 10 minutes later the film started, but it picked up well after the point were it stopped. We were annoyed.
About 45 minutes later the film broke for good. All they were willing to give us was a free voucher, which essentially replaces the movie I couldn't finish watching. After raising enough hell, they reluctantly gave us a second voucher. All during this the manager hid; he sent this young girl who was literally shaking to tell an angry crowd that the film broke while he ran and hid.
Needless to say, I'm quite pissed off.
kana da - May 21, 2005 03:31 AM (GMT)
Well, my dad just called. He went to Star Wars with a bunch of people from Indiana.

Update: I may be attending a Saturday showing (today, technically). Stay tuned.
Freezing Cold Water - May 21, 2005 07:32 AM (GMT)
It is good? Is it actually worth seeing? Let me know. Thanks. ^_^
Daemon - May 21, 2005 02:02 PM (GMT)
I went last night.
I think that it was pretty cool. Worth the price of admission.
saskatoon saskatchewan - May 21, 2005 03:12 PM (GMT)
Yeah, it was pretty good, just saw it last night. Overall, not as good as episodes four and five, but by far and away the best of the three prequels. Samuel Jackson gets his wish, and finally the prequels are concluded. I'm not so certain though if i'd ever want to see episodes seven, eight and nine. Easily, the prequels could have killed my enjoyment of the Star Wars series for me, but luckily they didn't.
Beaver-Country-Canada - May 22, 2005 01:57 AM (GMT)
Having never seen any other Star Wars movies (at all), I don't really know or care what to expect (but then, I've said I'm not a Star Wars fan...). However, I am tagging along to the movie tomorrow (and dreading it with all my might). I've heard all the spoilers, and the ending sounds really really lame. It should be quite funny for someone who doesn't know about the story!
:P Kudos to all the Star Wars fans; I may not be one, but to each his own! (meaning I don't hate you for liking Star Wars :P )

Saw, loved it, clapped when the credits rolled.
Episode III was terrific...
My birth name is Luke...
I was named for Luke Skywalker, ask my dad.
So Star Wars is my life. Seeing Epi. I and II kinda killed my happy "Star Wars buzz" I had developed. But III reaffirmed the truth: Star Wars f**kin' rocks!

Carbanousa - May 22, 2005 12:30 PM (GMT)
Hmmm... Busy theatre, lots of children, and an eerie silence...
Production:
- Shiny, and sparkling - couldn't ask for more.
Plot:
- Emporer Palpatine's twisting of Anakin into Vader was nothing short of clever. It could have been a little darker and more psychological. Liked the reference to his 'Master' - nice expanded universe link. the handling of his Palpatine and Vaders' disfiguration was excellent.
Special Effects: A little over-the top in places, but well thought out and fitting.
Acting:
- A little dry in places
Direction: Spot on.
Favourite Moments:
- The space combat. The fore-runner to the X-wing was a nice looking craft, with that blatent 'Incom' design about it. *Hurrah!*
- Yoda and Palpatine going hammer and tongs in the Senate chambers. Big fight, no messing around, it was business - could have been a little more of a dirty fight though.
- The end - for good reasons. Tantiv IV looked sooo nice, as did the Executer (the ship that Vader ended up on). It felt like Star Wars with the set design and layout. Very swish. Liked it lots.
Fight Choreography:
- Beautiful Light-saber duelling...
Miscellaneous:
- Here's the rub. The 'No!' scene was just a case of WTF?! and poo. Absolutely no need. R2's scene against the warrior droids was a little too out pf character and an Astromech's programming remit. True, R2 has done some things that are questionable for an Astromech in the other films, but full-on combat is a little too far-fetched.
- It was also nice to see Chewbacca *yay*.
Music:
- Better towards the end, where the original score kept creeping in for impending Sith doom.
Great film in all, and thank G/god the continuity was tied up and remedied all those nasty loose-end that were hanging around. Yoda's assignment to Obi-wan at the end about Qui-gon Jin, was a real  moment - explanation please... Meh - spelcial edition for all those bit I suppose.
I think my favouritist bit was NO JAR-JAR BINKS! :D  :D

I taped Episode 1 from last night, and I'll tape Episode 2 tonight. Monday--Star Wars day!

*fingers crossed for expanded universe and [i]hopefully[/u] Grand Admiral Thrawn or Exar-Kun*
Emus in denial - May 22, 2005 05:57 PM (GMT)
Isn't Exar-Kun from long before any of the movies in the timeline?
Redundancies - May 22, 2005 06:18 PM (GMT)
Well, we ended up not going to see it.
So I'll have to find some time later this week to do so.
kana da - May 22, 2005 09:19 PM (GMT)
Well, I was watching Episode 1 right before I came, but I didn't see the end, because the tape ran out. Grr. How does it end?
Redundancies - May 22, 2005 09:46 PM (GMT)
It's been a while since I've seen it, but:
(warning: SPOILERS)
-Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan fight Darth Maul. Maul stabs Qui-Gon through the chest, Obi-Wan slices Maul in half at the waist.
-The Gungans battle the advancing droid army. Jar Jar's clumsiness comes in handy when he more or less accidentally destroys a bunch of the enemy's robots.
-Anakin hides in a fighter ship, which unexpectedly blasts off into space. There, he blasts into the droid control ship, blasts it in a vulerable spot and escapes out before the thing blows sky-high. Back on the surface of the planet, the Gungans cheer as the robots deactivate.
-In the aftermath, Mace (I think) and Yoda discuss the events that occurred, which gives some nifty foreshadowing concerning Palpatine and Anakin.
kana da - May 22, 2005 09:47 PM (GMT)
Okay. Thanks. So I was getting near the end when the tape stopped.
They're playing Episode 2 tonight.

Yeah - he's from during the early Sith wars. When Luke opens his Jedi Acadamy in the massassi ruins of Yavin 4, guess who's spirit is roaming around and gets released? Yup Mr Kun's.

New plan--6-ish tonight.
We're hoping that, since it's Monday and early evening, the theater won't be too crowded.
Details to come.
Beaver-Country-Canada - May 23, 2005 06:48 PM (GMT)
OMG, sorry to all the Star Wars fan, but I think that wasn't the greatest Star Wars movie to go see as a first time show of Star Wars... The first part was funny, but then Hayden Christensen (who looks SO hot) gets burned, and then its just hilarious! Seeing Darth Vader become how we know and love(not) him was hysterical, I must admit. And, having never actually seen a Star Wars movie before, I must admit, the only thing I liked were the graphics and the bluescreening they did. And Hayden and Ewan McGregor, of course :P
Yeah. Can't really say much else. Again, sorry to all the Wars fans, but I'm not one! :P

That's why I started with Episode I, so that I'd have a clue what's going on. I started Episode 2 today, but then my mom and sister decided to watch chick flicks. They're on their last one, so I'll be off in about an hour and a half to watch Star Wars.
Redundancies - May 24, 2005 02:02 AM (GMT)
Got to the theater--showed up at 6 and purchased tickets to the 6:10 show. The theater was maybe a quarter full (they were showing it every half hour, and it was early on a Monday. Good times). Immediate thoughts...
Pros:
-The spaceships. They looked more Star Wars-y than the previous prequels--the ships from Episode I and II looked too "shiny" if that makes sense. I also dug the hyperspace-ring thingy (presumably a fuel tank of sorts for ships that don't naturally have hyperdrive)
-The lightsaber battles. Hoo boy, I don't even know where to begin.
-Yoda was a badass again. I love it!
-Anakin's descent into evil. They really did that storyline well.
-Certain scenes that were almost "too dark" for a Star Wars movie. Folks who've seen it should know what I'm talking about. I kinda like dark scenes...
Cons:
-I hate it when people make stupid decisions in movies. Without putting too fine a point on it and spoiling it, there seemed to be plenty of stupidity on both the Light and Dark sides.
-The dramatic scenes got a little melodramatic.
-R2 got a little too "active" for an astromech droid.
Overall, a great ending to the trilogy, wrapping things up nicely and setting up Episodes 4, 5, and 6.
EDIT: Looking back on the thread I see Carb made a lot of the same points I did. I think we're pretty much in agreement overall.
Carbanousa - May 24, 2005 01:40 PM (GMT)
I think the darkness of the storylines is personal interpretation. Personally, I think that Episode V is the greatest ever - it's brutally dark. But yeah - not bad :).
Redundancies - May 24, 2005 03:00 PM (GMT)
It wasn't so much the storyline I was thinking of--it's more the imagery and "feel" that were dark. I'm thinking along the lines of the look of the lava planet, some of the more intense battle scenes, and things like that. Some of the images shown were truthfully a bit gruesome. Plus there's a feeling of dread that pretty much hangs over the whole movie.
Carbanousa - May 24, 2005 04:18 PM (GMT)
I think that was probably the overall intention. It was a monumental occasion in the chronology. Everything is doomed. In comparison to Episodes I and II, it was certainly moodier, and solemn. I found that Episodes I and II didn't pay the long-time fans any credit as they were unnecessarily 'kid-dified'. True, there was a whole new generation to target, but it could have been handled better. Episode III could be regraded as an apology, in parts.
At the end of the day it's only a film, and everybody takes someting different away from the experience.
