Title: New People's Thread
Description: Some Basic Threads to Read

kana da - October 22, 2004 02:23 AM (GMT)
Ok, first of all, this is separate from the FAQ. This is just for Standing Around the Water Cooler, so new people don't have to ask stuff like, "What's GARPA?" It'll have more threads. Go ahead and suggest threads if you like.

Profiles

GARPA--the female club

HMWHC--the male club

What People Do For A Living

How People Got Their Nation Name

Any others?

Checkers McDog - October 22, 2004 02:39 AM (GMT)
Can't forget our pinned topics....

A/S/L?

RL Pics Thread

The other "profile" like, and general getting to know each other threads:

Jobs:
- What would you say...you do around here?
- RL Jobs
- Whatcha do for a living?

Profiles:
- The Ridiculously long "Get to know ya" quiz!
- Questionnaire

Nick/Nation Names:
- Where did you get that name, anyways?
- How did your nickname/nation name come about?

Lots of overlap! Maybe this thread will reduce some of it! :D

(hmm...for topics that are the same, (nickname, jobs) try bumping the newest one if you could :D )

EDIT: organized that properly now ^_^

With all the Americans hanging out here, I thought I'd set up a political orientation guide of sorts:

If you are in a "blue state", you'll probably get along with people from the majority of the provinces in Canada.

If you are in a "red state", you'll want to seek out the Albertans, and members of the local Royal Canadian Legion.

If you are in a chemically altered state, you'll get along well with those from B.C., especially from those around the Whistler region.

Others can feel free to add to the list as they see fit.

Redundancies - February 1, 2005 09:10 PM (GMT)
I think the proper phrase would be "If you'd rather be in a blue/red state", as I am in a red state but have philosophies going towards the blue.

Thanks for the tip bweezy!

Yeah, I see fit to say that as a "blue state", politically speaking, I just can't get along the rest of Canada.

To paraphrase Charles de Gaulle: «Vive le Québec bleu!»

(Of course, old traditions attributing blue to the tories and red to the liberals have been lost... and I don't get where you got your colour code from, but anyway. Since when do I make senseful points here?)

Emus in denial - February 13, 2005 12:46 AM (GMT)
In the US they use blue for the Democrats and red for the Republicans. Both American parties are right wing by Canadian standards but the democrats are much less so.

La Grande Hermine - February 13, 2005 02:45 AM (GMT)
I see... But oh, what do left and right-wing mean in Canada? If I'm not mistaken, recently in BC they had a NDP provincial government and elected mostly Tories at the federal election... and here, in the region of Québec (not the province, I'm talking about the region around the capital only), where the Bloc Québécois is always very strong, the Action démocratique du Québec, an almost-new provincial and right-wing party, has gained much popularity of late... Know what? I dislike them even more than I dislike the federal Liberals, I think... They're a real shame.

This to say, like two years ago they made that poll at Laval University, where I study; it revealed that about 50% of the students couldn't make the difference between left and right on the political exchequer. And the highlight of the article in which that was written only read: "50% of Laval students can't make the difference between left and right."

I cut and kept the highlight.

Vote for the party with the coolest name, remember...

And, generally speaking the Conservatives are right-wing (like the U.S. republicans, only not quite so right), the Liberals are slightly left of the U.S. Democrats, and the NDP are pretty far left, being as they're socialist.... um... no idea about the Green Party...

I know, but, really... for too many people it doesn't mean a thing... Actually, these days I'm being very disillusioned by all those people around saying that democracy is the best thing in the whole wide world, and democracy in Iraq, and democracy here and there... And when they get the chance to really exercing it, they don't give a damn.

Like at our (very occasionnal!) assemblies of the Music Faculty students' association... we barely can get our 5% of members to have the quorum, that's ridiculous. I'm far from being in favour of dictatorships and such, still...

Not here. We just vote Conservative. Except in Edmonton, or way down south where they vote even more right-wing. ^_^
