kana da - July 28, 2004 03:59 AM (GMT)
Hmm. . .this could be difficult. Since I'm actually Canada, and RP'ing as such, what is Canada's team?
Oh, well, I'll go with my own choice.
The Ottawa Senators will be playing.
Redundancies - July 28, 2004 12:28 PM (GMT)
I would think that Canada's team would be the grammatically-incorrect Maple Leafs--at least if you take the same connotations as one would of "America's Team" for the popular sports here. As an explanation, the Dallas Cowboys have long been referred to as "Amercia's Team" but they are reviled by just as many, or more, people as they are loved by.
Plebiland - July 28, 2004 01:17 PM (GMT)
All right this is going to be big, 10 teams already !

Wouldn't logic dictate that Canada's team would be the Montreal Canadiens? :)
Redundancies - July 28, 2004 03:00 PM (GMT)
I dunno, it just seems to me that the Leafs (Leaves) are more broadly either loved or hated.
And who ever used logic in the sporting world?
bweezy - July 28, 2004 03:07 PM (GMT)
Blackshear - July 28, 2004 04:34 PM (GMT)
The Cowboys (and Yankess) are widely loved and/or hated because of their sustained success and string of championship seasons. Using that criteria, the Canadiens would definitely be Canada's Team. Was anyone here even alive the last time the Leafs won the Cup? :P
bweezy - July 28, 2004 04:37 PM (GMT)
Was anyone's grandparents alive the last time the Leafs won the cup? :D
Redundancies - July 28, 2004 04:43 PM (GMT)
Bweezy, that's cold.
According to her profile, Ess was alive when the Leaves (I cannot in good conscience use the grammatically incorrect name anymore. Sorry) last won...
And while Toronto hasn't had any championships lately, they're been good for quite a few years--the Habs have been up and down in that span (and also haven't won a Cup in 11 years, so...)
Maybe we need to take a vote and find out who really *is* the most loved/hated team in Canada.
Blackshear - July 28, 2004 04:54 PM (GMT)
I, personally, dislike the Edmonton Oilers more than any other NHL team. They were forever eliminating my beloved Winnipeg Jets from the playoffs in the '80s. Despite my relocation to a suburb of Edmonton, I cannot find it in my heart to forgive them.
bweezy - July 28, 2004 04:59 PM (GMT)
Strangely, I have forgiven the Oilers. I watched in horror at the Arena during game 4 of the second round of 1987, when the Jets seemed destined to tie the series at two games apiece, only to collapse in front of me. Then I watched the great 3-1 collapse of 1990 (still the best series I ever watched).
They beat us, but at least they were a good team. I have never forgiven the Canucks for beating us - a bunch of pylons.
Checkers McDog - July 28, 2004 05:04 PM (GMT)
As for the Leafs love/hate thing...
They have an enormous fan base, because they're the team of the biggest city in the hockey country. People love to hate, what many others love. Same thing can apply to the Cowboys and and Yankees. They have tons of fans, so they have tons of haters as well.
Just an idea...I know you guys have other reasons for hating the Leafs.
(And there's also the fact that so many Canadians hate Toronto for some reason...someone's gotta explain that to me someday)
bweezy - July 28, 2004 05:08 PM (GMT)
My hatred for the leafs stems from the fact that they've been built into a pack of thugs. I liked the leafs in the Harold Ballard era- their team wasn't comprised of jerks back then. I held out hope for liking them again when my hero and role model, Ken Dryden, became their President. But Pat Quinn had to continue ruining the leafs.
I also resent being forced to watch them EVERY Saturday Night.
(Well, not this season - we're getting cable installed today!).

Meh, they're just putting on what's going to attract the most people.
bweezy - July 28, 2004 05:12 PM (GMT)
And if HNIC were on a private network, I'd be more tolerant. However, CBC's main aim is to show diverse programming that promotes Canadian culture. Showing the Leafs every Saturday is not promoting diversity.
Blackshear - July 28, 2004 05:20 PM (GMT)
I don't hate the Leafs, in fact they were the first team I supported (in the Lanny MacDonald, Daryl Sittler, Borje Salming era). I just don't see them as Canada's team.
Further alienating me from my Alberta neighbours, I don't hate the city of Toronto, in fact it is one of my favourite places in Canada. Virtually all of my relatives live within two hours of T.O.

I bet their is a convoy of angry gun-toting rednecks on their way to apprehend you right now...
Blackshear - July 28, 2004 05:37 PM (GMT)
I just looked outside my window...

I think that's the wrong nationality of angry, gun-toting redneck.

You'd be surprised at the similarities.

Since the Saskatoon entrant is also called the "Blades", Bweezystan's national hockey team will now change its nickname to the "Bullheads"

oh sorry, I didn't notice, I just thought of our dub team. :hide: I could change mine to the blues in honour of the RL blues almost moving the team to S'toon.

Rural Saskatchewan and Alberta have plenty of Rednecks believe you me.
Anyways, the reason I hat the leafs is well simple, Pat Quinn was a bum when he played(anybody remember the cheap shot he layed out Orr with?) and now, the team he has is full of bums. Next to Detroit, there's no team I can't stand more. Hell, the current leafs would ahve ben great like ten years ago, not anymore.
Oh yeah, GO OILERS GO!!! (Nedved might be coming back  )

Oh, I believe it--but in the picture, the rednecks are wearing colors and symbols of the University of Tennessee. I'm just thinking that Canadian rednecks wouldn't be rooting for them, you see...

I was going more for a cheap laugh than anthropological accuracy. It appears I failed on both accounts. ;) :D
Redundancies - July 30, 2004 04:37 PM (GMT)
Nah, the cheap laugh was successful. I was, in fact, playing on the joke with my posts--I think my deadpan style just made it seem like I wasn't amused.
Plebiland - August 1, 2004 01:28 AM (GMT)
The format of the competition will be a 10 team league where each team will play each other once. At the end of the league stage the top 2 teams will go straight to the semi-finals with the next 4 teams playing in qualifying finals to enter the semis.
Lets roll
