Title: NS Downtime

bweezy - June 24, 2004 05:09 PM (GMT)
The server will be going down for a spell, here are some details:

Downtime Ahead

We're off to new servers, and, as a result, the game will experience some downtime. Yes, for a short but terrifying period, the internet will be without NationStates. Somehow we will all just have to find the will to soldier on.

There are two parts to NationStates: the game and the forums. The game will be unavailable for a fairly brief period, while the forums, which are being completely replaced, will be down for longer.

Here are the details. The entire site will be down for approximately three hours beginning Monday 28th June 2004 08:00 GMT (click for the time where you live). When it comes up, it will look all swanky and new!

The forums will go down at the same time and remain unavailable for approximately 72 hours. When they come up again, they will be part of the Jolt forums, look very different, and not crash every five seconds. There will also be some functional changes.

Watch this page for updated news as it comes to hand!

Please note: the move to new servers (and forums and software) is a big step, and technology being what it is, there may be a hiccup or two. If so, please don't panic; we'll get everything sorted out eventually.

For those in the Eastern Timezone, the site will be down from 4-7 a.m. on Monday. Please use that time to figure out who to vote for in Monday's Federal election... :)

My oh my...
Doesn't the new site and interface just look the mutts nuts?

Oilers Fans - June 28, 2004 06:23 PM (GMT)
Never heard that phrase before, but yeah!

bweezy - June 28, 2004 06:27 PM (GMT)
The site also seems to be slower than it was before the switchover- certainly not living up to expectations (at least not yet)...

Yeah, it seems much slower than before....but I love the direct link to the telegrams :)

From NS News:

Well, the new server is getting well and truly spanked, and is not exactly what you'd call lightning-fast at the moment. This is partly because everyone is logging on to check it out, and partly because you have to download the site's graphics all over again, and partly because we haven't quite got the web server settings right yet.

Hang in there -- this is a temporary situation.

Nation creation is disabled for the moment, as we're still in the process of copying across ex-nation data. This will be completed within 24 hours.

Carbanousa - June 28, 2004 10:15 PM (GMT)
Yeah - although it's a tad slower you don't get all those "Gateway timeout" error messages or "Server not found" harping on about no Domain Network Server.

It will catch up, with some tweaking and additional memory allocation. Blimey, it's only been on-line for less than 12 hours and it's already getting slagged-off...

What I want to know is why the hell the NS forums aren't ready yet. I found them and they are still mods-only right now. There doesn't appear to be a notice concerning this anywhere on the NS site.

They still need to "bridge" it between Jolt and NS. Some computer thing that my little tiny brain can't understand.

I just wish it would hurry up, too. I love the forums.

The delay is partially the result of Max Barry's father passing away....he hasn't been able to pay much attention to NS in the past few days.

SalusaSecondus on the NS News page:

It occurred to me that a bunch of players would probably like to know when the forums will be up. Clearly this has taken us more than the 72 hours previously estimated. So, now that statements of the obvious are out of the way, what's going on?

Well, since you're dragging it out of me, 99% of what needs to be done has been. Things have been tested and are working, the forums are set up. Basically all that remains is for everyone involved to sit down briefly, go down the checklist and make sure that everything really is ready and that all concerns of all parties involved have been dealt with.

What does this mean for you? Well, two things: 1) I don't have an estimate for when it will happen. 2) Whenever it does happen, it should be soon.

Ice Hockey Players - July 11, 2004 06:55 AM (GMT)
Thanks for filling us in, Checkers. I don't mind that the forums aren't up yet; I just wanted to know what was going on, and now that I do, it's cool.

Checkers McDog - July 12, 2004 09:25 PM (GMT)
Forums are up, and linked from NS.

kana da - July 12, 2004 09:54 PM (GMT)
And they're back down again.

Carbanousa - July 12, 2004 10:49 PM (GMT)
*enters looking like pall-bearer*
I guess they need more time

General Calrisian: "Hey my friends down there... Han will have that shield down! We gotta give him more time!"
Nimh Numbh: "Huh yuh"

bweezy - July 13, 2004 05:37 PM (GMT)
I'm on them right now. Very slow. Worse than before. Clearly, there are some transition issues.

Carbanousa - July 15, 2004 09:13 AM (GMT)
Just to let people know that the quick links to the Forum are now re-enabled.

bweezy - August 9, 2004 05:04 PM (GMT)
Is it just me, or is NS really slow today?

Checkers McDog - August 9, 2004 05:07 PM (GMT)
It's slow for me too...

Ess - August 9, 2004 05:16 PM (GMT)
it's slow... <_<

Beaver-Country-Canada - August 9, 2004 06:38 PM (GMT)
