Title: Nationstates Hotlinks Webpage
Description: NS related links of note

bweezy - May 15, 2004 03:20 AM (GMT)
I suck as a webmaster. This is as good as it is going to get. But it serves its purpose.

I believe myself to be a pretty good HTML master, and I am very willing to volunteer and help improve the hot links page.

bweezy - November 22, 2004 10:28 PM (GMT)
Go ahead. A lot of the links are out of date, so you might want to verify the links by checking in with each region.

The Dunadin - November 24, 2004 02:12 AM (GMT)
I am not that great at FTP, so i could maybe make all of the HTML's and Pm to you or post them right here. It's gonna take a few weeks cuz i got lots of homework lately.

Carbanousa - November 24, 2004 12:37 PM (GMT)
I wouldn't use FTP anyway, not for this purpose as it doesn't make sense or save any time or effort. Just use straight HMTL/XML links to the target address. Alternatively, you could save the target page as .mht and host it from a separate location but you'd have to manually update it then and constantly check the source page for changes. That would be time consuming.

If I were you, I'd just hotlink all the pages to open in a new browser window.

The Dunadin - November 24, 2004 10:09 PM (GMT)
I'm doing that. I guess you only need 1 or 2 page for it...I'll upload it somewhere then. What i do is to remove all of the underlines of the links (cuz it's really annoying to have underlines), make links different color, have a heading (Hot Links!), make the links pop up in a new page, and maybe even add a little desicription for a few sites. It's gonna be cool. I love HTML

Drygion - November 24, 2004 10:44 PM (GMT)
I'd be willing to host anything if needed. I've got 850mb left on my domain and about 200gb of bandwidth. It just sits there mostly.

Carbanousa - November 25, 2004 12:09 PM (GMT)
I'm wondering if it would be worth linking the Regional Web-page MrPopo generated to this index?

It's http://m1a1.net/ . Of course there is something in the root folder (don't want to have the directory structure showing, as well as come on, I'm paying money for this thing, might as well use it for something), but a subdomain with pretty much unlimited (or around 850 or 875mb free disk space), damn near unlimited bandwidth (I think I'm up to .... 300gb now? I can't count. It might be 340gb), a ton of available scripts and programs to install, and no downtime.

Carbanousa - November 26, 2004 02:33 PM (GMT)
Sounds good. I also noticed it's running Linux. *looks around then nods in approval*

The Dunadin - November 26, 2004 10:04 PM (GMT)
Hmm thats good! Well...then i guess once i finish with the codes, i can post them, then you can upload them. However, i might often have updates and so on for the website and it might be troublesome for you to constantly replacing codes. If you want to then I'll be glad to post the codes.

Drygion - November 27, 2004 05:57 AM (GMT)
Whatever. I can also just set up an ftp account and make it a lot easier. :P

All you'd have to do is upload the files.

That's fine. PM the code rather than post it or Email it to me. My Email address is in the members' profiles. It can be uploaded to the site here.

Sure. The updates could easily be done this way which would save a lot of time and effort.

Ok then. I'lll set up a subdomain (canada.m1a1.net sounds fine, right?) and an FTP account when I get back from dinner later. B)

The Dunadin - November 28, 2004 01:21 AM (GMT)
Hmm i have no idea about FTP, and never got used to them (i think i used a FTP program once to transfer stuff between computers, and but never understood how to use it to make a site)

So i'll pm the code to Drygion or Carbanousa? I wont be done for a while, there are definitely A LOT OF regional forums.

Btw some of them werent there, like australia, and middle earth to name a few, and i couldnt find it in nationstates regional page.

Sounds good to me. I'll book mark it later next week.

Would it be possible to send a copy to both, just to cover all the bases?

IF you need any Regions' Forum URL let me, or BCC know and we can either post them here, or PM them to you. The Embassy Forum should have most of the URL's in or you could do it the hard way by checking each Region with an Embassy and checking the Region's page on the NationStates main site.

Rofl yea, a lot of wat i was missing was on this page. Well i'll post about all of the regions im missing the next time i start on the html editing....i think i got half of all of the regional forums already..but i got tons of homework right now...school...

HAHA finally uploaded it! Take a look at it now!

http://canada.m1a1.net/

Isnt it wonderful? Suggestions! remember that its not done!

The Dunadin - November 28, 2004 09:59 PM (GMT)
W00T! Now its done! All finished! All of the links on there works. From now on I probably will just tidbits of extra stuff on there once in a while to make it look better and so on! Suggetions! COmments! Critisism! Most important of all...praise! lol

Carbanousa - November 28, 2004 10:57 PM (GMT)
It worls fine, but if this is a comprehensive list of all Regions, there a quite a few missing. I would suggest only including those Regions that are either active within the world, or those concentrated on by the various television and new netowrks.

Also, some tables would be nice so that there are more links on the page without the need for scrolling. Dreamweaver would make an excellent job of this.

We can add it directly to the appropriate Forum directly.

The Dunadin - November 28, 2004 11:22 PM (GMT)
Well i thought about the table thing, and i could do that without dreamweaver easily (since i dont have it). I will work on that over this week, checking for missing regions and so on. Im not sure which regions are acctive in the world and so on, if anyone could give me a list I would be glad to make special heading "Active Regions", then "All regions" something liek that.

Ess - November 29, 2004 12:51 AM (GMT)
Nice work!

Thanks! :)

kana da - November 29, 2004 12:56 AM (GMT)
Definitely cool.

hudson bay - November 29, 2004 02:24 AM (GMT)
That was a ton of work! Nice job... :Canada:

The Dunadin - November 29, 2004 03:40 AM (GMT)
I'm thinking of embedding music in the background...so that it comes on when the site is loaded...what kind of music do you think I should have? Other than the national anthem.

hudson bay - November 29, 2004 12:22 PM (GMT)
When you get a chance, you might want to fix the spelling mistake in the begining.

Daemon - November 29, 2004 02:44 PM (GMT)
I personally think that it is good without music. Saves on load time and bandwidth usage. Plus I find webpages that play tunes a little annoying and invasive.

But that is just one man's opinion.

Redundancies - November 29, 2004 04:55 PM (GMT)
I would agree with Daemon - music absolutely kills load times on a dialup connection, and when surfing I'd much rather hear my own music than something someone else has selected as appropriate for their webpage.

Make that three.

Is it really necessary to have all Regions displayed? It's a lot of work and Regions fade in and out of activity.

Ess - November 29, 2004 06:09 PM (GMT)
Make that 4!

I dislike sites that play music. Ick!

:D

The Dunadin - November 29, 2004 09:37 PM (GMT)
well ok that just saves trouble for me then. If you have any features please do suggest them, its just a matter of time before I bring them.

For the regions, i havent got a clue which ones are actually more active then the others, and if anyone got a list of most active regions then I'll pust it in my site, then I will list all of thje regions i can find below that in alphabetical order.

I might also put a counter on the forum, tells you how many ppl have visited the page. I will over this week make the list of all regions into tables, and maybe add little buttons on top A, B, C, ...Z, to lead you to that part of the regions that startes with the letter.

So much homework from school!

Daemon - November 29, 2004 10:06 PM (GMT)
If you know basic SQL and PHP, then you can use the Cloudscape DB to fetch and log the various board's statistics, and then dynamically sort and arrange all the regional based on this. As they are all Invasion boards, I imagine that this will be a non-trivial but not impossible task. And as Cloudscape only has about a 2MB footprint, it shouldn't be too big a deal to do. Though I really don't know much about the Java server config, I could probably hash out some basic code for it.

Anyone else with skills to help with this? I think that this sounds like about a 2 week project.

I have no idea about php or SQL, i learn HTML only lol.

Btw not all boards are invision, there are almost as many proboards as invision, and there a quite a few webpages instead if forums. I had to check all of the sites to make sure that the links worked.

Maybe I'll just check for the number of posts and member number on each forum and make list, then determine which ones are more active. If anyone can do this for me then it would be good lol.

Daemon - November 29, 2004 11:05 PM (GMT)
Lemme know the general percentages for each. The meta's on each page should give enough info that as long as under 5 stat gathering scripts can hit 90% or more, in might be interesting.

The Dunadin - November 29, 2004 11:12 PM (GMT)
right...

Daemon - November 30, 2004 01:23 AM (GMT)
Each type of board would require 1 script to grab the stats. It's pretty easy in a Perl-oid, or really any language with Regular Expression support. Any markup language like HTML makes RegExing a real dream.
