Title: WTA tour
Description: Anything about WTA players

smartie - September 29, 2004 06:27 AM (GMT)
Since the favourite WTA players thread was getting a bit old and largely just general comments about WTA stuff, I thought I might as well start a new thread for anything related to the women's game. :)

Clijsters returns after long absence

After nearly five months recovering from surgery on a cyst and a torn tendon in her left wrist, Kim Clijsters will take her first careful steps on the comeback trail tonight against Iveta Benesova, of the Czech Republic, at the Gaz de France indoor event in Hasselt, Belgium.

"This is a situation I've never been in before," Clijsters, the world No 7, said. "I don't know what to expect so I'm not going to put any pressure on myself. I will play to the end of this year but I'm already focusing on next year. I just want to get my match rhythm back again and get fit so I can start training for the beginning of next season."

While the doctors assure her that her wrist is fine, she is still in pain whenever she hits the ball.

"They shaved off a part of the bone," she explained, "and that made it stiffer so that I don't have the true motion I had before. It's still hurting whenever I hit a backhand, but it's just a matter of getting through that. The more I play, the looser it will get and the less pain I'll feel."

Good luck, Kim! I hope she can get back to normality soon.

Ouch! The poor girl - having to go through so much pain. :( I hope that she is not coming back to early. So many players come back too soon and actually cause more damage than they had in the first place.

Hopefully she can have a decent tournament and start getting back into the groove. I've heard she's the most friendly player on the WTA tour. :)

GO CLIJSTERS!!!!.....I hope she will be doing a great job.........I always love to see her play....soooo good luck..

Yeah me too :). Get well soon!!!

tennisrocks - September 30, 2004 04:01 PM (GMT)
I hope that she does well too. There is some good news...

HASSELT, Belgium -- Former top-ranked player Kim Clijsters made a winning return to the tour Wednesday, shaking off five months of rustiness to beat Iveta Benesova 7-6 (3), 6-2 and moving into the quarterfinals of the Gaz de France Stars tournament.

Ok Kim, you can do it!!! Get another title right away!

Christian - September 30, 2004 04:24 PM (GMT)
yeah, i saw that match yesterday. in the first set, Kim made a lot of unforced errors, but in the second she played good. not excellent, but you can't blame her for that: she's been out for 164 days, according to our commentator.. but i have to say she surprised me, she had a lot of power and her service was great, 19 aces or so..

in the quarterfinal she'll play against Els Callens or Maleeva..

tennisrocks - September 30, 2004 04:29 PM (GMT)
Wow! That's great! This has been a good start for her I'd say, especially if she can win the title.

Christian - October 1, 2004 07:30 PM (GMT)
Kim's in the semis! she won 6-3, 6-4 over Maleeva! it looks like shes making a very good comeback..

carole - October 1, 2004 07:39 PM (GMT)
yes she is!
very remarkable

(i just wish i could say the same about... youknowwho :( )

Marionette - October 2, 2004 02:50 AM (GMT)
Wow, she's springing back really well!!!

Shhhhhhhh.... Carole, don't let it bring you down :(

the ferrero fan - October 2, 2004 10:03 AM (GMT)
definitely hope she will win the tournement.....

greetings!!!!

tennisrocks - October 2, 2004 04:23 PM (GMT)
Does anyone know how she's doing now? whether she got out or is in the final? I can't find anything out!

Christian - October 2, 2004 04:27 PM (GMT)
she's playing the semi-final against Elena Bovina tonight, at 19.30 local time, that's about one hour. you can follow the match on her official site: www.kimclijsters.be

tennisrocks - October 2, 2004 04:30 PM (GMT)
Thanks Christian! Definently be watching that!

Christian - October 2, 2004 07:23 PM (GMT)
Noo... Kim had to retire, her wrist again. so sad :(

tennisrocks - October 3, 2004 02:28 AM (GMT)
That is so sad! I really wanted her to win it all:( This is always the way it goes isn't it? Our favorite player get far and then they have to pull out!

Oh wow! I just made my 100th post, and now I'm a ball kid!!

Booshie - October 3, 2004 04:14 AM (GMT)
Yes...this is really unfortunate. :( The poor girl! I hope that her wrist will get better. What a sad story it would be if this keeps her out for another year or something. :( At least she made it to the semis..that was a nice effort. But it's all for naught if her wrist is hurt just as badly as before. We don't know to what extent is it injured again though. We'll see I guess....

Congratulations tennisrocks on your 100th post! :) :flower:

Christian - October 3, 2004 09:59 AM (GMT)
this article was on her official site:

.. i'll try to translate it :P

The wrist-injury of Kim is not passed yet. The Limburgse got trouble again by a return at the service of Bovina and had to retire.

"It's not clear yet what's wrong," says Marc Dehous, the trainer of Kim. "Possibly it's wrong with her tendon again. We're going to the hospital for further investigation in a few moments."

"During the two other matches Kim had no trouble of her wrist-injury, but today she got a stab of pain when she returned a service of Bovina. It looks like she won't play anymore this year."

sorry for the faults, but i had to do it very fast :P

kaa - October 3, 2004 10:14 AM (GMT)

but it's a real pity :(
kim is one of my favourits!!! she really don't deserve sthing like this!!!

Kim Clijsters looks set to miss the rest of the season after her comeback came to an agonising halt with a recurrence of a wrist injury during the semi-finals of the Belgian Open in Hasselt.

"As things stand, I do not see her playing any more this year," the former world No. 1's coach, Marc Dehous, said.

Belgian Clijsters was playing her first tournament in almost five months after tearing tendons and having surgery on her left wrist to remove a cyst.

She was trailing 6-4, 2-2 against Russian Elena Bovina when she quit.

Clijsters had asked for medical help after the seventh game of the first set and a courtside trainer strapped her wrist.

In obvious discomfort, Clijsters abandoned her two-handed backhand and tried to carry on by using only one hand. But the move failed and Clijsters decided to halt proceedings.

"She'll go to the doctors again on Monday to check what happened exactly," Dehous said. "But as she feels pain at the same place again, we are not very optimistic.

"Kim felt immediate and acute pain in her wrist after returning one of Bovina's serves a little bit too late. She stopped at 2-2 in the second set because she was suffering too much."

Dehous denied Clijsters had aggravated the problem by coming back from injury too early.

"The doctors gave her the green light to compete in the tournament and she played her first two games without pain at all," Dehous said.

"She followed what the doctors and surgeons ordered her to do."

Bovina was to meet fellow Russian and top seed Elena Dementieva in the final of the WTA Tour event after the French and US Open finalist beat Italian Maria Elena Camerin 6-3, 6-3.

It's pretty much saying the same thing, but I still thought I should post it anyway. Damn, she's missed out on practically the whole year...

But tournament doctor Bruno Willems was far more negative on Monday.

"This injury can mean the end of her career," Willems told Belgium's De Morgen newspaper. "I hope she comes back, but I'm pessimistic."

Argggh, i hope thats not true

Christian - October 4, 2004 01:44 PM (GMT)
that's terrible, if it really can be the end of her career :( . so sad, hope this doctor isn't right.. :omg:

tennisrocks - October 5, 2004 02:18 AM (GMT)
Oh man! that is terrible! I hope that doctor is wrong...VERY wrong. But who knows how long she was intending to stay since she and Lleyton are getting hitched ("married" in hickish). Hey now she can have kids!!Wouldn't that be sweet

Christian - October 5, 2004 12:25 PM (GMT)
this doctor was wrong :D .. she's a few months out again, according to this article:

Kim Clijsters' injury appears to be not too serious. Ice, rest, inflammatory drugs and a brace (again) should have her ready for 2005.

During the sixth game of the semi final against Bovina, Kim felt a sudden pain in her left wrist on a difficult backhand. The pain only got worse, even after treatment. Retiring from the match had become inevitable.

New medical examination and Medical Image Analysis (echo review and NMR analysis) revealed a new injury in the left wrist, close to the old injury (which repeatedly showed completely recovered on previous examinations and NMR).

This time, the problem is most likely the tendon of an important wrist extensor (extensor carpi ulnaris). Luckily, the tendon isn't severely damaged. Possibly some filaments have come off, or the tendon sheath. Further examining over the next few days will give final proof.

Ice, rest, inflammatory drugs and a brace (again) are probably the most important now. Further treatment will be discussed together with Kim's entourage and the wrist surgeons doctors Kinen and Verstreken. A new surgery is not being planned for the time being.

After being out for so many months, Kim was more than ever ready to return to her previous top level. This she proved during training as well as during the first two matches. The new injury is quite a blow, but will be and shall be resolved. After being out for a couple of months, Clijsters will be a full 100% ready for 2005!

Henin-Hardenne to take time out

Justine Henin-Hardenne will not play again this year as she battles to shake off the lingering effects of a virus. The Olympic champion has not competed since losing her top world ranking at the US Open, where she was beaten in the fourth round by Nadia Petrova.
"Despite the excellent shape I was in during the Olympics, I'm still feeling tired at the moment," she explained. Henin-Hardenne first reported signs of the energy-sapping virus in April but beat Amelie Mauresmo in Athens.

The 22-year-old Belgian began the year in style by winning the Australian Open for the first time in her career. But she crashed out early in the French Open in May and did not even compete at Wimbledon as the virus kept her on the sidelines for most of the summer. Although she bounced back to win the gold in Athens she looked jaded at Flushing Meadows where she surrendered her world number one spot.

"It's logical that I'm this tired. It's high time I get some rest. A period of rest will allow me to recharge my batteries and become even stronger," she said on her personal website. "When I'm fully recovered, the enthusiasm to win will be even bigger. Even though I've had a tough season, I can't complain about my results; five victories and two big titles."

She will now miss the prestigious year-ending WTA Championship from November 10-15.

=/ First Kim, now Justine. Well, I guess it opens things up to some of the other players, what with the Williams sisters no longer being dominant/prominant and all.

carole - October 11, 2004 08:14 PM (GMT)

EQUELITE AS THIRD CASA FOR SHARAPOVA

Today finished another visit of beautiful campeona from Wimbledon to the Academy.  After several days of training and relax in the site that it calls her "house in Europe", guapisima Russian flew to Switzerland to dispute its following match.  It was not the first visit for Maria Sharapova to Equelite but for its new trainer, Michael Joyce, American professional ex--tennis player.  Very it was made an impression with the facilities of the academy and from the first day, agusto felt very, just as campeona and the rest of its equipment.  Maria and its father, Yuri commented that Equélite was for them like its "house in Europe".  Aside from training, Maria also enjoyed going to the cinema the rest of the players of the Academy.  In the next visit, it wants to learn more Spanish to enjoy his new house.

Christian - October 16, 2004 02:43 PM (GMT)
oh well, Sharapova seems to enjoy Equelite :D and probably the company of JC, he was at Equelite this week as well.. they seem to be good friends, i remember a few pics of them together. ^_^

ferrerofiedx89 - October 16, 2004 10:59 PM (GMT)
haha maria's pretty lucky to be spending so much time there= not only great tennis facilities and a "home in europe" but so much juanqui time! hahaha and learning spanish!!!!! argh, that's so cool i wanna learn spanish so bad....i was actually gonna take french all through out highschool, but i don't know maybe i'll stop after this year, which is my third and take spanish 1 and 2 in my junior and senior year....hrmmmm dunno, but i really hope i can speak either french or spanish fluently one day, if not both hehe

sorry for going off on yet another tangent haha

tennisrocks - October 17, 2004 04:37 AM (GMT)
Ohh Ohh!! I want to be Sharapova right now! Just think...she might get to talk to JC on a regular basis...she is so lucky!

Lloydsgurl - October 17, 2004 06:13 AM (GMT)
<_< As if I needed another reason to be jealous of Maria.

She is totally gorgeous, and people love her, and now she gets to spend time in Spain! Arg.

My. Life. Is. Not. Fair.

I wonder what she sounds like speaking Spanish...

I'm pretty good at it because I live very close to Mexico, so it's like required. But Spanish that is more Spain based sounds different than Spanish that is more Mexico based. It'd be interesting...

Go Myskina!

cherry11 - October 17, 2004 03:25 PM (GMT)
:hyper: MYSKINA!!!

She bageled Elena in the second set!!!

Actually...I like both players...better luck next time Elena. :(

ferrerofiedx89 - October 19, 2004 12:34 AM (GMT)
yea i like both players too.....but i hope dementieva wins a final soon...she's been in quite a few....I really wanted her to win the USO this year...too bad, it didn't happen

the ferrero fan - October 25, 2004 08:02 PM (GMT)
I've just heard Michaela Krajicek.......little sister of wimbledon winner richard Krajicek....is taking part in her first senior tounament....in Luxemburg.....
maybe some of you don't care....but she's from the netherlands.....and at the moment we don't have dutch women taking part...in seniors.....not that I know of....

anyway I hope she can win her first round......but I guess that will be very tough....she's playing against...asagoe.....so.....if she will lose....it's not to surprising!!!

we''ll see....I'm just so proud she made it through the qualification....she had seven matchmoints against her.....still managed to win the match.....

HUP KRAJICEK!!!!!!!!!

JCF.dutches - October 26, 2004 12:14 PM (GMT)
I, personally, don't care about Michaela. So what if the all dutchies don't have a reprensentatrice in the WTA. I'd rather we have none than one who's such a bad sport.
I'm sorry, but she needs to grow up some more if she wants to be great in this sport (or anything else for that mather). In addition to her tennis training, she could have some training in players ethics and manners as well.
I remember her at RG where she lost in the semis. She wouldn't look at her opponents face when they had to shake hands. She just touched the hand for 1 sec and then walked away angrily in a mad dash. Didn't even bother to shake hands with the umpire. "He who is great, is great in accepting his defeat graciously."
Not to mention her annoying cries and fistpumps, but that seems to become a common thing nowadays for players.

I normally am not likely to jugde players on their behaviour, but Michaela can not be excused. Especialy since she's been put on a pedestal by the Dutch.
Sure she's talented, but then I can't sum up another 10 (well, 5 then)girls of her age in the circuit who are as equally talented but have better temperament.

the ferrero fan - October 26, 2004 04:22 PM (GMT)
well.....you're definitely right...about her manners towards her opponent.....I remember when she lost.....and didn't congratulate her opponent in a normal way....that was really sad...really pathetic.........soooo....I agree with you on that one....
I hope she wil changhe that way of thinking.....that's obviously not nice....

But I do like the fact there is a dutch player....in the WTA tournament........not that I watch the WTA all the time....not at all......ATP is far more interesting.....at least for me.........but I just hope that soon we will have more dutch players in the WTA.....well in a couple of years maybe....and also more guys....that would be great for holland......I guess.....

anywayzz...... the other players are far more experienced than her....sooo...I guess she won't have too much chance....at least not now..........

we'll see.....what she will do....and how she will react.....

greetings........
