Title: Roleplaying Tips
Description: Thanks to Breena

I've decided to finally post these Roleplaying Tips as I believe they were beautifully written. All thanks go to Breena though, as she wrote them.

What is RPing?
Role playing (RPing), is like being an actor or actress in a play. You play the part of your character as he/she interacts with the other players. The part that you play helps to make the story being told in a given thread more interesting.

How do I get started with RPing?
Most people start by entering a thread, and either introducing themselves to another character, or by simply letting it be known that they're there, and wish to get to know others.

For example:
QUOTE

Breena stepped onto the Hogwarts express. She was very nervous about starting at the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and wondered if she'd make any friends. As she came to an open compartment, she looked inside, and saw a dark-haired girl sitting next to the window. In her hands, the girl held a snake.

"Hello." Breena said shyly, eyeing the snake warily. "Do you mind if I join you? There aren't very many seats left."

From there, the person would come back and reply at some point---and usually, it's to say that they'd be glad to have you join them.

What are some tips for good role-playing?
First, try to stay on topic. Don't come into a thread, and just post something random. Read what's already happened, so you'll know what's going on. Otherwise, you will either throw the other characters off (which is really annoying), or your post will simply be ignored. Sticking to the plot is a must when it comes to RPing.

Also, try to make your thoughts and actions clear. Even if you have to write out the thoughts of your character for everyone to see, it will help. Although most characters can't read those thoughts, the person behind them can, and it'll help them to understand what's going on with your character.

What are the rules for RPing at HPU?
Honestly, you should not be wondering this question, as you were supposed to have read them before you signed up. However, we do like for everyone to understand the HPU rules. Therefore, you can see them, by clicking on the link below:

Click here for the HPU rules of RPing

Here are some basic rules for writing in an RP setting:

1. Role-playing is typically done in the past tense.
QUOTE

Example: Breena walked into the Charms class precisely at 8 a.m.

2. Spoken words should be placed inside of quotation marks ( " " ).
QUOTE

Example: "Good morning!" She said to her students.

3. Actions stated in character should not be surrounded by asterisks ( * * ) or colons (::), unless it is being done in an Out Of Character (OOC) message or forum. The following is an example for a post that is made In Character (IC).
QUOTE

INCORRECT: *places parchments on desk and turns to students*

CORRECT: She placed her parchments on the desk in the front of the classroom, then turned her attention to the students.

4. Thoughts are usually written in italics.
QUOTE

Example:  Everyone looks so sleepy. She thought as she looked around at the faces in front of her.

Put it altogether, and you get....
QUOTE

Everyone looks so sleepy. She thought as she looked around at the faces in front of her.
