When I first saw that name on hamutaro.com, I thought "what the hell kind of name is that?". It was written in katakana, so I knew it had to be an english word. The only thing I could get out of it was "muffler". About a week later in japanese class, we were doing a review on clothing items. This one thing had all of us stumped, "mafura". How the hell does someone where something for a car? It turns out that Muffler (Mafura translated), also means SCARF. I guess the name is pretty self explanatory. Feel free to comment.

I'm taking japanese in university, so this is really interesting to me.

The "fu" mafura is an airy "hu/fu" sound so i'm not sure whether it is meant to be an H or an F.

The other hamster's names in japanese are items too:

megane - glasses
hamutarou - hamster boy
taishou - admiral, boss
noppo - couldn't figure it out
maido - greetings (literally "every time")
kaburu - wear on head (verb)
koushi - calf
tora - tiger (for both Stan and Sandy)
neteru - sounds like "neru" meaning to sleep

some of the names are kind of weird, imagine if our english hamsters were called "scarf" or "glasses".

Latin is still used in animal names in biology classes. It's really handy because the animal types are all arranged according to these latin names.

Yeah, I can read 2 of their 3 alphabets. Their super-advanced kanji alphabet is tricky, my class has only taught me about 50 of their 2000 kanji symbols. It's actually really fun to read japanese!
