Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! Voices from a Medieval Village, by Laura Amy Schlitz, is the 2007 Newbery award-winning book which depicts life in a Medieval village in England. It is written in separate soliloquies to be read as though by seventeen students or people--as a dramatization. It also includes explanatory notes in the margins. It is quite captivating and a reader would like to jump into the book and "change" the destinies of the characters. The hopelessnes of some and the necessary fate, even when not so bleak, of others is the strength of the book, along with almost poetic prose. This was written by a librarian who wanted her students to be able to really know and feel what life would be like in Medieval times--she succeeds! This would be for Intermediate level and older readers. Prof. Opal
