In An Embarrassment of Riches, two men are sent by President Jefferson to explore the southeast USA (partly in the newly acquired Lousiana Purchase Territory), but these aren't Lewis and Clark! The two, William and Samuel Walker, are sent out to try to discover the Giant Sloth--the bones of which have intrigued Jefferson for many years. The title refers to the over-abundance of natural beauty and wealth that this new territory posseses. They are underfunded and ill-prepared for the violence of the new territory. But, they are enthusiastic! That may not be enough to ensure their survival, however.
I was prepared to really like this book--the subject and anticipated humor of the plot was intriguing. However, I had very mixed feelings about its success at entertainment. The violence was too graphic to have any humor about it and, although the "ups and downs" of the heroes' fortunes certainly made for suspenseful reading, it didn't give all that much satisfaction. There were moments of humor and incredulity, but also of "was that really necessary to write?" It did have a good overview of some of the southeast USA's "legends" and special natural beauties. I guess, on the whole it was "okay."
