2007-Annette's Maintenance Journal-2007

NOTE: UPDATED FEBRUARY 15, 2007 (See February Jornal entry)

This is my maintenance journal for 2007 and I also have previous threads “Annette’s Journal 2005, & 2006” under "Maintainer's Hall of Fame". I will be posting on the 3rd Thursday of each month my weekly exercise, weight, and notes, for 2007.

Here is a bit of my testimony that I have shared previously, and some added thoughts for 2007:

Thanks to my grandmother’s faithfulness to the Lord, I received Jesus as my personal Lord and Savoir at the age of 5 years old. I have lost and gained weight several times, but it wasn’t until I sincerely went before the Lord in prayer and asked Him to help me with my weight issues that I begin to see changes. God said that He does not show favoritism, so if He could help others lose weight, He could surely help me. I went to the library and read books about dieting, nutrition and health and I came across a book, “Dieting for Dummies” (Of course I know I am not a dummy). This book gave me lots of good information, especially in the areas of counting calories. This book recommends consuming fewer calories than your body needs in order to lose weight. It also mentioned the importance of exercise. Also, it stated that those that were successful journaled their food intake. I bought a notebook from the store and begin logging my daily food intake and exercise. I still continue to do this today, because it seems to work best for me. I have made a commitment to log down my food intake and exercise.

The book “Dieting for Dummies” also mentioned getting the support of others. I had some support from my family (my husband, my son, and my mother), but they were not very knowledgeable on losing weight and keeping it off. I lost about 43 lbs in about one year (losing about 1 lb a week) but I was not able to maintain all of my losses, because I was in a vicious cycle of gaining and losing a pound or two.

Then, the Lord led me to “God’s Grace for Dieters” Forum. Here I was able to get spiritual food as well as information about weight loss and nutrition. I lost the remaining weight and reached my goal weight of 133lbs. My goal is to stay at 133lbs (plus or minus 3 lbs [130-136lbs]). I have a weight range because your weight can fluctuate on a daily basis due to the amount of food consumed the night before, salt intake, the amount of food in your gut, hormonal changes and a host of other reasons, even if you stay on your weight management plan. I currently weigh 130lbs, so I’m within my maintenance range. I have maintained for over 3.5 years now with the help of the Lord and the support of the members of “Grace”. I reached my goal weight on April 10, 2003. For exercise, I also have a goal of walking everyday. I have been a member of this Forum for over four years.

God provided this wonderful forum, with spiritual and diet support, so then with God’s grace I had to do my part. He was always there for me with the strength to overcome, when I faced temptation, and He was always there to comfort me when I fell short. God is faithful.

I have also found the book, “Thin For Life” to be helpful. It provided insight on how many others have been successful at maintaining their weight losses for several years.

For the past three of the four years since I have been maintaining I have logged my food intake, exercise, and weight in an Excel worksheet template (downloaded free from the Internet) and charted my progress and trends. It has been helpful to me, personally because I see my patterns and trends graphically and this lets me know where I might need to make changes.

I am 5 feet 4 inches tall and during 2006 I averaged about 1400-1600 calories a day. I have a range for an average because some of my food, especially those that I ate in a restaurant were my best estimate.

I walked an average of 45-50 miles a week, which is my major form of exercise. My plan is to add Pilates in 2007.

My average weight was 130-133 pounds, which I consider maintaining, because it’s in my maintenance range of 130-136lbs, which takes in account fluctuations due to water retention, gut content, etc.

It has been an interesting journey in 2006, and I’m looking forward to great things in 2007.

I will be praying for all my “Grace” family during this year, that God will supply your needs and give you the godly desires of your hearts…and being fit, as you know, is a godly desire. :)

PHILIPPIANS 4:19
And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

PSALM 37:4
Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.

This has been a month for reflection and planning for improvements for the future for me, not only in weight management, but also in my life as a whole. There are aspects of my life and behaviors that I would like to continue, because they are beneficial, and there are those aspects of my life or practices that I don’t want to continue. In other words, where possible “Out with the bad and in with the good.” :)

This month has been fairly stable, and there weren’t any real surprises, just eating more food during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday that I normally don’t eat, and maybe a little less exercise, but I’m looking forward to getting back to the routine that has been working for me, but with some improvements. :)

PHILIPPIANS 1:6
Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

I believe that the work the Lord has started in us, in all areas of our life, including weight management, He will faithfully and excellently complete. :)

You all are in my prayers.

Annette, thank you so much for sharing your testimony with us. Thank you also for being so dependable and consistent with your maintenance and your encouragement.

I've updated the Walk By Faith Progress Chart to include your new total of 7,700 miles walked. :im: Your stars look like this: * * *

 Hello Dave

Thanks for updating my miles and thanks so very much for your encouraging words. Your support, along with my other “Grace” family members really helps keep me motivated to continue the good fight of faith. Now, in case someone doesn’t know my history, I have been walking for nearly four years and that’s how I was able to walk 7,700 miles. Plus, I like walking, and it really works well for me. There are so many forms of exercise out there, so I’m sure with a little investigating, everyone will find a form of exercise that really suits them, too. :)

Hello Ironia

Thank you. It looks like we have something in common, because I have been a lifetime member of Weight Watchers also, for over 20 years but I am not currently active. Weight Watchers has a decent program, but I did not seriously do the program back then in my college days. I also gained the weight back and then some, but I have since learned that my health is important, so now I count my calories and journal, and now mainly have group support on the “Grace” forum. Most of all I have now lost all the weight and am keeping it off with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. My motives back then were to only look physically attractive and to win favor with my peers. How shallow is that!!! Now I rely more on the Most High---my Lord and Savior, and I work at maintaining my weight for several reasons—living a healthy lifestyle is one of them. Ironia, I got the weight off again and I am keeping it off, you can, and I know we ALL can, by totally letting the Lord guide us with His love and wisdom. :)

Annette and Ironia: Can I join this group too? I'm a lifetime WW member. I made it to my goal after maintenance and that was the last I saw of it. Sad, huh? Nonetheless, I have just started attending again. I went once and then got sidetracked with a trip to FL. Tomorrow (Monday) is the day will I will attend again more seriously.

I originally came here to find out how your weekend was going Annette? What did you do for fun? If you don't mind me asking what line of work you're in? Is it indoors or outdoors. How do you make time to get your walks in? Forgive me if you mentioned it before because I may not have been looking for that answer until now.

Have a great Sonday and I look forward to your next entry.

DavEdsel - January 28, 2007 01:43 PM (GMT)
I am also a lifetime member of WW. I 've gotten to goal twice, once when I was 18 and again 10 years after that. I gained back more each time, and in less time than it took to lose it. I was even a group leader for WW for about 6 months.
I WILL GET BACK TO GOAL, and this time I intend to stay there and join Annette in our Maintainer's Hall of Fame.

Maintaining is much harder than losing, and you are doing so great, Annette, and such an inspiration to us all.

Annette - January 29, 2007 11:51 PM (GMT)
Thanks Ironia, for your enthusiastic support!!! :)

Denise, it’s good to know we also have something in common. :) My weekend was fantastic and the highlight was the church service. To answer your question about my line of work, well I have the wonderful job of being a housewife :) and I wear a pedometer (a device that gives the number of steps, distance, etc.). I keep the pedometer on all day, while I’m doing housework, shopping, walking around the block, going to church, watching T.V., and even while on the phone. I basically, just keep moving and it’s become a part of what I do. When watching T.V., cooking, etc. I try to multi-task and keep moving. It took a while for me to find a form of exercise that would work well for me. I’m sure you’ll find something that works well with your schedule and soon it will become a routine and eventually a habit. :)

Dave, that’s great, because being a Weight Watcher leader is no small feat!!! I’m sure if you maintained before, you can do it again with the proper adjustments. I’ve found that maintaining is easier than losing, for me. :) It’s easier this time, because with the Lord’s help and reliable resources, I’ve individualized a lifestyle plan and have generally set my own rules to follow, within healthy spiritual and physical guidelines. Weight Watchers was a fantastic start for me, because I learned many things. Now, years later I’ve learned about other beneficial tools like counting calories, developing healthy habits, getting proper exercise and getting free Word based spiritual and diet support, like we have here at Grace. :)

Like I’ve mentioned before, I believe Weight Watchers is a decent program and I learned many valuable things, even years ago when it was not as well developed as it is today, but ultimately we have to find what works best for us on an individual basis. We have to find a healthy program, whether it is individualized, commercial, or some combination of the two that we can practice for the rest of our life. One key ingredient for my maintaining for almost 4 years is learning to follow the voice of the Holy Spirit when faced with daily temptations to stray. I don’t think any program can teach us that. That’s something that is only developed through fellowship and worshipping the Lord, through His Word. I tried so many years to lose and maintain weight on my own, without the Lord’s guidance and now I’ve finally learned that I have to do it with Him, while wholeheartedly following His divine and wise counsel. :)

Roseheart - January 30, 2007 02:46 PM (GMT)
Hi Annette!

Well from one housewife to another, I think you're doing an excellent job! There's no pay like it and the benefits don't compare do they? I like the concept of keep moving and have decided to adopt it as one of my own. I also have a pedometer that I will put back on. The only time I am not able to use it is during a Karate workout. So, off to put it on today. Thanks for the reminder!

Have a great week and I look forward to your next entry.

No, I didn’t gain weight!!! :) I actually lost weight this month, but I got a brand new digital scale with all the bells and whistles—a step up from my inaccurate analog scale that I have been using for the last 6 years. The new digital scale weighs me about 3 pounds heavier than the old one. I believe the digital scale is a more accurate representation of my weight because it pretty much weighed me (under the same conditions) the same as the doctor’s scale that I got weighed on, yesterday.

Initially, when I weighed myself on the new digital scale it was a “bummer” :) , because I was attached to my old numbers, especially after seeing them for almost 4 years. But honestly, after weeks of battling in my head I came to the conclusion that I’d much rather have a good representation of my weight as it really is. It did, however, take me some time to adjust mentally, and there are still thoughts going around in my head. But the important thing is that I have peace in my heart, now.

Just think when I actually made goal at 130 lbs., I was actually 133lbs, and when I reported 128 lbs, I was actually 131 lbs. And my starting weight of 179 lbs was actually 182 lbs.

First, I thought to myself “I’ll lose the three pounds”. Then after my doctor saw my weight go down, after seeing it stable for many years, she said, nicely “You don’t need to lose any more weight.” Then I told her, I have a different image of myself and I didn’t realize my size until earlier that day my husband and I saw our reflection in a huge mirror in an office building. I told my husband that he looked like himself to me, but I look skinny and I asked him if that’s how I actually looked and he told me, “Yes, you are skinny.” What an eye opener!!!

I did not understand “skinny” in a negative way, but that I was thin, because the doctor had already said that my weight was fine and my weight is in a healthy range and healthy BMI for my height range.

Well, I got the word from my husband and my doctor, that I looked skinny, although my husband has been telling me all along. It has taken awhile to get use to the new me and my mental image is still playing catch up to the actual physical image that I actually do have.

So, I decided to update my starting weight, goal weight and maintenance range by 3 pounds, so that they reflect reality. I’ve been happy with how I look and how my clothes fit for the last 4 years, and there is no need to hold on to the old numbers for the numbers sake. :) I’m happy the way I am, and the way I look and now, also the new numbers in the journal will be more accurate.

Also, since I am updating this month, I decided to report averages of my weight for the week, instead of a specific data point (or weight at one particular time), because the average gives a better representation of my weight. This journal entry for February, above, has the daily averages for the week rounded to the nearest whole number.

Well, I’ve been chattering up a lot here. I learned a lot recently, but I am satisfied. But to put it in a nutshell:

1. I will be reporting my weight 3 pounds higher than what you have seen in the past, because I have changed from my old analog to a new more accurate digital scale.
2. I have reset my start weight, current weight, and maintenance range to more accurately reflect reality.
3. I will report my weight averages for the week, because I think it gives a better representation of my weight trends.

Now that’s cleared up. :) I am very satisfied, content, and grateful with my progress this month and I thank God for shedding light on how things really are in regards to my weight and my perception of how I really look. Sometimes I see myself as the overweight person that I use to be. I thank God for his loving guidance and the support I get here at “Grace”. :)

 Annette. I read your journal today with baited breath. That was quite a move to go to the new scale. I am glad you did it and have safely arrived at the gate of wisdom.

Your month looks great, as usual. I don't have the image issues, but I do know they are real. I am thrilled for your support system offline and for your decision to stay with your Grace family who loves and admires you dearly.

Out of curiosity, have you ever posted an on line picture somewhere? I know I have nothing current. Last picture I liked was at goal weight so I wait to get there again. I have gotten serious this year and have changed my approach to no diet, no way (!) and am doing better in a lot of areas. We each have to seek our path via the Holy Spirit as you are fond of reminding us all.

Well anything else new in your life or noteworthy?

Annette - February 15, 2007 10:55 PM (GMT)
Dear Editor, I enjoy my new scale and it gives me useful information such as fat %, water %, bmi, bone mass %, etc. I know some of these measurements are not the most accurate, but it does give me some type of reference. One of the things that attracted me to the scale was that as a whole bathroom digital scales are more accurate than analog scales. I also bought this particular scale because it gives some indication of the bone mass %. Osteopenia runs in my family. Osteopenia --bone density at the spine or hip between 1.0 and 2.5 standard deviations below the average for healthy young adults (T-score between -1 and -2.5); can be a precursor to osteoporosis.

I am also glad that I’m in the process of developing a better body and self-image perception. I guess we’re all working on something. :)

I know posting a picture of myself would put a face and body to all my posts, but I’m sure you’ll understand with the recent news programs regarding identity theft and the abuse of images posted in the Internet on sites like YouTube and MySpace why I would not feel comfortable posting an image of myself. I currently don’t have an image of myself on the Internet and I know many feel comfortable doing that, but I’m really not. :) Maybe, one day I will when images can somehow be protected from the abusers who make it hard on the ones that are doing good things with the Internet. But for now I’ll remain imageless. lol  Thanks for understanding, but I’m sure many of you will get to see me when we get to be with Our Lord and get our glorified bodies. :)

I thank the Lord, and I thank all my Grace family for your support!!!

:god: ALL :ghug:

Denise,

I have completed the sample for you and I put it in a table format, so I can email it to you if you'd like, because of the type of format it’s in it would be easier for me to attach it to an email. I don't have your email address, but you can email me if you would like to get it that way? :)

Thank God, I feel the month went well, with no real surprises. :) Of course that’s different than last month, if you remember, with my new digital scale that gives me a more accurate representation of my weight 3 pounds higher than what I thought. :) Also remember that I’m recording weight averages, now, because that takes into account weight fluctuations. Actually my highest weight for the month was 133.2 lbs one day, and the lowest 129.4 lbs on another day. As you can see there is about a 4 pounds variation from the highest to the lowest weight in the month.

It seems like I was craving chocolate a lot this month, eating Snickers, Hersey Nuggets, and chocolate cake. I hope this will pass and I focus on healthier snacks like fruit. :)

I did put the junk food that I didn’t eat in the freezer so I wouldn’t eat it, because I was reminded of what Paul wrote the Galatians:

Galatians 5:16 (Amplified)
But I say, walk and live [habitually] in the [Holy] Spirit [responsive to and controlled and guided by the Spirit]; then you will certainly not gratify the cravings and desires of the flesh (of human nature without God).

I had to let the candy go!!! LOL

I’m getting excited, anticipating the upcoming fourth anniversary (April 10) of maintaining my weight loss and over four years of being a part of “God’s Grace for Dieter’s” Forum. Our Dear Editor has done such a fantastic job by providing sound diet and spiritual support. I praise God for her, and for all the members here at “Grace”. I’ve really gotten the support that I’ve so wanted and needed from my dear “Grace” family. It really really helps me out a lot. :)

Everybody, I’m thinking of you and praying for you all, knowing that we all are still fighting the good fight of faith. So, don’t ever give up or throw in the towel. Continue on the journey the Lord has for you, because we all actually have the victory in Him.

My love to you always, Annette.

Holy and Righteous God, the path is so clear as we focus on what Jesus did in our behalf, and how He left the Holy Spirit as our Guide and Comforter. We thank You for the continuance in the true faith to contend for that Annette never fails to point the way to. We give You all the glory that is due unto Your name, Lord.

Annette stands alone in obedience to the plan You gave her to lose weight and to successfully keep it off. She has went ahead as a forerunner to point us to You and the need for obedience and discipline. We thank You that she has stayed with this fellowship and did not abandon us once her goals were met. We thank You that You show us grace in action. We thank You that she has been truthful in You to let us know there had been diet failures before she found her path. We thank You for the opportunity to listen to her as a witness, as we learn, and benefit, and grow from her testimony. We thank You for the celebration of the fourth year of maintenance, and we pray for Your continued blessings to be upon her. Grant all the needs in her life outside of the dieting realm that she has been petitioning You for.

Blessed be the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen

Dave thanks so much for praying for me, too, and faithfully updating my mileage totals. :jog:

Hey Natalie, thanks for your prayers and encouragement. :pal: It’s taken me about 4 years to get to 8,000 miles, but I enjoy walking, mainly because it makes me feel good and I don’t need any or very little preparation in order to walk.

Thank all of you for praying for me.

Barbara thanks for the blessings and the encouragement. :) I was able to walk that many miles by doing a little bit everyday. I gradually increased my distance from about 2 miles a day to where I am now (about 5-8 a day). I use a pedometer and count any and all steps/miles I walk. I leave the pedometer on practically all day. It’s a habit and a part of my everyday routine. I got the encouragement to begin walking from the “Walk by Faith” (under the Gym) thread here on the “Grace” forum. :god:

Looks like you've had another great month Annette and are continuing to enjoy success. Have the cravings for chocolate disappeared. It's my understanding that when you crave chocolate what you're really lacking is magnesium. Out of curiosity, are you taking a Cal/Mag supplement? Dr. Weil recommends the Calcium Citrate form. It's a little more expensive but better quality. What say you?

:vic: and :prayed: Annette: You are a trailblazer. I celebrate with you! Thank you for sharing your journey!

Annette - March 16, 2007 04:09 PM (GMT)
Denise,

As long as I can remember, even as a child I have had cravings for chocolate, almost daily. I even ate 13 regular sized Snickers bars in one day, when I was about 14 years old. I purchased them at a nearby store and ate them without my mother’s knowledge. She would have surely told me to stop eating them, if she knew. :) I did have to pay for my mischievousness later, though, with a terrible stomachache. lol  My recent cravings just seemed more than I normally have had in the past. So I still do have cravings, I’m just controlling my response to the cravings. I believe I get plenty of calcium through dairy products, like yogurt and supplements, but I’m not sure about magnesium. I will be doing some research to see if I might need to boost the magnesium in my diet. Thanks so much for the tip and your enthusiastic support. :)

Ironia,

Thanks for beginning the celebration with me and rooting me on with your prayers. It really means a great deal to me. I, too, am looking forward to rejoicing in what I have been able to accomplish with the help of the Lord and the support of my "Grace" family on this coming April 10, when I will have completed my 4th year of maintenance. :)

How's your week going Annette?

Annette - March 22, 2007 09:28 PM (GMT)
 Hey, Denise,

I’m doing fine, but I do still have chocolate cravings. :) I don’t think I’m getting enough magnesium. When I go to the store this weekend I plan on buying magnesium/calcium supplements up to the recommended daily allowance (RDA) 500-1000mg and also in the proper ratio of Mg/Ca. Thanks again for the tip. :god:

Hey Annette! I'm glad you're having a "fine" week. Hopefully, the weather is nice in your neck of the woods. As for the magnesium, I hope that it helps you because I know that magnesium is considerably lower in fat too. I'm not sure if you saw this but here's an article for you.

This month was fairly stable, and believe it or not I’m still working on a balance of exercise (calories out) and what I eat (calories in). I’ve found it’s an ongoing process to make minor adjustments as you go along depending on how well your clothes fit, your measurements, and of course the number on the scale. And, yes, we are not the number on the scale. It’s just one of our many useful gauges on the weight management journey. :)

With that said I am pleased at how this month went and the time you all set aside to celebrate my 4th year of maintenance. :) It meant a lot to me. :)

Remember everyone to hang in there and don’t give up, you’ll be reaching your goals and then going beyond them, soon. :)

Galatians 6:9
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Annette, only heaven can tell what good it does for us to see your consistency and stability. :)

Thank you, Dear Editor, for faithfully continuing to encourage me as well as the other members of “Grace” and the numerous guests that visit this site, daily. Although you do not know, now, the full positive spiritual impact that you and this site have had on the many people who visit, you will know one day and get the heavenly rewards and blessings that so appropriately goes along with it. :) Thanks again for being such an encouragement to us all. :)

Thanks, Annette, that was very gracious and kind. Because I do give God all the glory, (apart from Him I can do nothing) He has let me witness these things in the here and now, and for that I am most grateful.

Hi Annette! :) How encouaging to see you still maintaining. Interesting about the scale but you recovered very gracefully. Despite the number on the scale, it seems you were actually quite slender.

I've said it often but like to repeat, it is such a blessing and encouragement to have you here with us. I'm sure the others are as grateful as me that you continue to share your time and journey here at Gracetoday.
