John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
One Sunday after church services, at one church I attended in my youth, one of the younger mothers was trying to explain to her child about the pastor's sermon. She had difficulty putting into words the sermon a child could understand. I'll have to admit that now as a parent, I might have the same difficulty. She did her best explaining the pastor's sermon. Jesus said to suffer the little children to come unto him and forbid them not (Matthew 19:14).
That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Jesus here draws the distinction between fleshly birth and spiritual birth. He did this to prepare Nicodemus to understand that it is the spirit and not the flesh which undergoes the change called the new birth. Regeneration is no slight, superficial change, but a radical one, and one which we can not work for ourselves.
The Fourfold Gospel
Heavenly Father, we thank you for your Holy Spirit. We thank you for the work he does, and we know that if we live in the Spirit, we will also walk in the Spirit. Father, help our hearts to be open to receive what you would have us to say. Help our mouths to be open to share your word with those in need. In Jesus' name we ask, amen.
