Day 4 of 5 mini course
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello editor,
BOREDOM .... THE BIGGEST CULPRIT TO SNACKING
Television is the biggest culprit for late night snacking. Why?
Advertisers really understand the principle "A picture is worth a
thousand words" and that's why they use fabulous looking desserts and
snacks. They also use attractive, healthy looking actresses and actors
so the message you get is: good food = satisfaction + no consequence.
Have you ever watched television then suddenly got the urge to snack?
Chances are good that a tempting commercial just pass your way.
Boredom triggers snacking. This is common when watching TV or
studying. 3 hours of TV is time that can be better spent improving
yourself. If you watch TV for more than 2 hours each night, try using
that time to get caught up on things that you've been putting off.
Even better, use that time to improve yourself.
Isn't your mind worth improving an hour each day instead of wasting it
on mindless entertainment? There's nothing wrong with television but
you should carefully select programs and use the extra free time to
improve yourself.
WHY IMPROVE YOURSELF?
Well, for starters, you become a more interesting person. Not only
will you be more informed and fulfilled, but you place yourself out of
the grips of greedy advertisers who want to control your actions and
your pocketbook.
WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH SNACKING?
When you're busy improving yourself, you're no longer bored. When
you're not bored ..... you STOP FOCUSING on food. Spending the last
hour or two on something useful is a powerful way of not falling prey
to impulsive snacking.
HOW CAN I IMPROVE MYSELF?
Start with the Internet. Do you have interest in history? Why not
explore
http://historychannel.com Do you want to learn more about
animals? Try
http://www.discovery.com or use a popular search engine.
Type in your favorite topic and explore all the great websites with
subjects that interest you. Never in the history of the world,
can you type in a word of interest, and have the equivalent of an
entire library at your fingertips.
If you're a book lover, go to the local bookstore or library at your
most vulnerable time, say between 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM. If you live
close to a Barnes and Nobles or Borders book store, then make them
your first choice. They offer relaxing music, comfortable chairs and
an endless array of books on every imaginable subject. If you feel the
urge to snack at the bookstore, then try decaf coffee sweeten anyway
you like.
If you have kids, this is a good time to enlist your spouse to
supervise while you free yourself to do something fun. You can
substitute the book store for, going to the local gym or visiting
a good friend.
OTHER FUN THINGS:
Plan Your Vacation. Whether you're planning to visit Rome or the Grand
Canyon, use TV time to plan your dream vacation. Pick out interesting
destinations, then read about the culture and points of interest. Put
yourself on a payment plan to pay for the vacation. Lets say you live
in the U.S. and you always wanted to visit London or Paris. Start
planning now to take the trip next year.
BUT I CAN'T AFFORD PARIS!!!!
Go to your computer and look up
http://cheaptickets.com on the
Internet. Registration is free. Once registered, put in the destination
and date you want to travel. Cheap Tickets does the rest by listing
air fares with major airlines at bargain prices. If you can travel
during non peak periods, you can fly roundtrip from Los Angeles
to London for as little as $400. From there, you can travel
inexpensively to many other places in Europe by train, bus or plane.
Add any destination you desire on Cheaptickets website to get an idea
of the air fare. You can also use their resources for hotels. Now the
budget part. Put $30 away each week in your travel fund.
$30 x 52 weeks = $1,560 or $40 x 52 weeks = $2,080. With bargain
airfare and reasonable price hotels, you and your spouse can easily
afford a dream vacation.
WHAT'S YOUR POINT?
Whether you're planning an inexpensive vacation by car or a dream
vacation to far off destinations, the fun is in the planning. Instead
of munching on Cheetos and leftover pizza late at night, spend 1 hour
each night visiting book stores, gathering information over the
Internet and planning your vacation. Vacations don't have to be a
long journey, just some place fun. Learn the history, culture and
things to do, so when you get there, you're familiar enough to make
the most out of your vacation.
Traveling is FUN for the whole family and half the fun is planning.
Instead of starring at the tube with thoughts of Doritos dancing in
your head, fill your time with adventure and plan your next vacation.
OTHER FUN STUFF
If you have artistic talent, spend your night developing
this skill. Buy paint brushes, water color and other artist material.
Practice one hour each night. When you're doing FUN stuff, you
STOP THINKING OF FOOD.
Think of something you always wanted to learn. Go to your computer,
and find an online study course. More and more classes are going
online. Do some soul searching and investigate areas that really
interest you.
YOUR ASSIGNMENT
This is soul searching time. Write down any subject that interest you.
Once you have a list, you have a roadmap to begin a new adventure.
If it's travel, plan your dream vacation. Whatever the subject, spend
1 hour each night, when you're most vulnerable to snacking, doing
something fun. In the process, you'll become more interesting,
enlighten, and healthier inside and out.
