This the first time the anniversary of
9/11 falls on a Tuesday, the same day of the week when hijacked planes brought down the World Trade Center.
For Kurt Horning, who lost his 26-year-old son in the attacks, that hits too close to home.
Horning was in New York on September 11th, 2001. He says it's never an easy trek to come back for the anniversary ceremony, but he just couldn't do it on a Tuesday.
The ceremony will be familiar - ringing of bells, a reading of names. But for the first time it's off the World Trade Center site, moved to a plaza nearby because of the ongoing rebuilding at Ground Zero.
Here in Western New York there are a number of remembrances as well. The main ceremony in the city of Buffalo will take place at the Erie Basin Marina. The September 11th Remembrance Ceremony & Freedom Celebration will start at 8 a.m. The mayor, Erie County Executive and members of the WNY 9/11 Remembrance Committee will be in attendance.
There are also several scholarship events today in remembrance of Western New York natives who were killed that day.
There is a car wash (rain or shine) at the Catholic Academy of West Buffalo between Noon and 4 p.m. It is dedicated to the memory of Sean Rooney. The funds will go to a scholarship for an academy student who plans to attend Canisius High School, Sean’s alma mater. The Catholic Academy is at 1069 Delaware in Buffalo, NY.
The Michael Lynch Memorial Foundation honors Michael’s ultimate sacrifice on September 11th. He was one of 342 firefighters who lost their lives trying to the save the lives of others. Click here to be a part of the foundation
On November 9th, an event for the Leonard M. Castrianno Memorial Scholarship fund is being held at Matthew Glab Post at 1965 Abbott Rd., in Lackawanna.
For more information, or to donate funds or an auction item, please contact Leonard’s twin sister Leigh, at 668-7921.
