Title: Devil May Cry: The Inferno

TheMissingCloud - May 6, 2008 02:18 AM (GMT)
Here is the prologue that will ruthlessly throw you into my DMC fic and hopefully leaving you craving for more. Similar to FFFF there are links in the story to images for the heck of it, call it one of my staples. Once I get the freewebs site created for this I'll post the link and possibly even stop posting chapters here instead directing all traffic there. As a bonus the site will house my author's notes on the chapters, basically what I was thinking while writing the chapters, what I think of the overall product etc.

I will update this story on a weekly basis shooting for Monday.

This chapter is rated PG-13 on account of a slight case of violence of bloodshed.

Prologue: Through the Fire and the Flames
Dante walks through the black portal ahead of him as bright white rays of lightning arc around the surrounding area. He travels through the blackness of chaos feeling compressed from an increase in gravity, when the feeling lifts Dante is in a large barren area with magma visible through the cracks in the scorched black earth. In the distance are flames rising high into the black sky above, but more importantly right in front of him is the large dark grey blob of Argosax the Chaos who is a conglomeration of bosses from Dante’s adventure on Dumary Island just outside the black portal and his previous voyage to Mallet Island.

To Dante’s right is the upper body of a large ape Orangguerra with reptilian skin and two sharp saber tooth fangs. Right of that is the head of a deformed decaying giant Nefasturris, next to which is the head of a Griffon the large left wing of which flaps over the head of the fiery Minotaur Furiataurus who wields a large hammer with his single arm. To Dante’s left is a large tentacle taken straight from the octopus-like anaconda Jokatglum. Directly in front of Dante is the head of a giant molten spider, Phantom who launches a fireball at him. Dante merely sidesteps the ball avoiding it and draws his sword Rebellion ready for action charging at the spider and unleashing a combo. He back flips avoiding a summoned pillar of flame that emerges from the ground right under where he was standing previous and starts pumping the Phantom’s head full of lead with dual submachine guns while moving around avoiding the other pillars of fire.

Soon the submachine guns run out of ammo and Dante discards them for his trusty pistols Ebony and Ivory finishing off the molten beast. With the giant spider defeated he moves on to Orangguerra avoiding a small whirlwind that the beast conjures up before Dante charges in with a Stinger closing the distance between him and his foe sliding with his sword pointed forward like a jousting knight with a lance impaling the ape with his blade. Angered it slams its massive fists into the ground in an attempt to flatten Dante who darts around the area with a series of Stingers damaging the giant primate while avoiding its mighty swings at the same time. Before long Orangguerra is defeated too and Dante turns his attention to the decaying giant Nefasturris jumping over the white beam of light it fires at him. He draws a large heavy Zweihander he found in his adventures on Dumary Island then unleashes a combo with the massive sword dealing a large amount of damage to the giant. Dante rolls avoiding another beam shot and shoots the giant as the beam splits into five worms of energy that snake around the area attempting to hit Dante. After a few moments the worms disappear and Dante charges towards the giant jumping into the air avoiding another straight beam and landing a vertical slice on the beast splitting its head in half with a gush of blood.

Argoax the Chaos violently turns its body ripping the large sword out of Dante’s hand leaving it impaled in part of the mass as the tentacle sweeps the area horizontally; Dante however jumps over it doing a mid-air cartwheel to the left avoiding it. The tentacle attempts to crush Dante with a powerful vertical swing, but he retaliates drawing Rebellion once again swinging it in a great arc to the right severing the tentacle, as it flops on the ground useless the Minotaur spits flames at Dante. Rather than avoiding them he Stingers through the fiery burst with such speed that the air from the attack keeps his coat from getting charred as he unleashes a partial Million Stab combo on the beast interrupting it with a dodge roll to avoid Furiataurus’s hammer swing. As Dante stands up he pulls out his pistols again firing a number of bullets though the Minotaur’s jaw and into its head each one drawing a burst of flame and blood. Dante back flips a couple times avoiding another hammer swing while putting some distance between him and his opponent pulling out a missile launcher that he also saved from his last adventure in the human world.
“So you like hittin’ hard do ya?” he gets the Minotaur within the guns sights, “Well then why doncha try this on for size!” and fires the single missile at the monster causing the entire beast to burst into flame and crumble to ash the large metal hammer lying on top of the blackened mass that was once Furiataurus.

Last, but not least Dante turns his attention to the Griffon firing a barrage of bullets at it while side stepping the multiple vertical rays of red lightning the beast launches at him. As Dante walks towards the feathery beast guns ablazing it changes up its attack firing horizontal rays at him. Dante jumps over the low rays merely stepping over some, ignores the high ones that are way over his head and ducks slightly letting the middle height one pass safely overhead. After a high ray passes and a middle height one emerges Dante jumps up onto the wobbly grey mass just behind the Griffon and plants his sword into the beasts head twisting it as it screeches in agony before pulling the sword out letting a steady stream of blood stain the ground below finally jumping back down to the ground satisfied.

The big grey blob of Argosax the Chaos begins to melt away exposing the core snapping the single umbilical-like coil attaching it to the gooey mass. A red orange flame inside the clear core pops it like a bubble releasing Despair Embodied the true form of Argosax, a fiery demon that rises into the air growing as brilliantly as a Phoenix emerging from its ashes.
Dante greets it lightly, “One more huh?” drawing his sword again. “Alright I guess I've got a little more time to kill.”

Argosax spins towards Dante violently slicing through the air using its sharp wings like a saw blade, but Dante blocks the attack with Rebellion and exchanges a few quick blows with the demon whose hands morph into Katars. Despair Embodied flies into the air followed by Dante as they both unleash an air combo blocking each others attacks. Next the devil swings his body in a wide horizontal attack using his wings as weapons again. Dante merely Air-Hikes summoning a red circular platform to jump in the middle of the air avoiding the attack and the two exchange another mid-air combo. Dante lands on the ground drawing his pistols while the fiery demon flies higher into the air unleashing a barrage of white rays that rain down on Dante homing onto him. He dodge rolls avoiding the first few rays then jumps into the air with a front flip, Air-Hikes then Air Tricks sliding to the left midair causing two rays to collide. As he falls back to the ground Dante spins upside down and shoots a couple rays before landing a handstand for the moment shooting another and flipping himself backwards onto his feet finally Trickster Dashing a few feet away causing all the remaining homing rays to either hit themselves or the ground during the process. He then summersaults landing a handstand and flipping forward into the air onto his feet again finishing off the evasive move while avoiding a fireball that Argosax shoots at him before side stepping a second and hitting the third fireball back at the demon knocking the wind out of him as it hits him square in the chest. While the demon is in a temporary shock from the attack Dante Stingers up to him and unleashes a Million Stab combo angering the fiery devil causing him to teleport behind Dante. Dante ducks avoiding a horizontal scissor swipe from Argosax, whose arms have now morphed into whips, unleashing a combo on the devil. The demon teleports again this time to the side of Dante thrusting one of his whips into the ground before swinging it upward in a long wide vertical arc. Dante effortlessly side steps the attack and unleashes another combo before blocking a series of attacks from Argosax who immediately flies into the air again receiving a rain of bullets from the devil hunter before it finally unleashes another blast of rays from its wings. This time all the rays fly straight and true towards Dante covering him in a white light for a moment. Argosax smirks having finally done some damage to the pesky demon hunter, but his smile quickly fades as Dante unleashes a series of fast spiral sword swings in all directions causing all the rays to fly back at its master. The son of Sparda runs up to the devil while it’s stunned leaps into the air and slices its right wing off; infuriated the devil teleports to the other side of the arena now a little slower only having one wing while Dante beckons it on with a wave of his right arm, “Showdown!”

Argosax morphs its hands into Katars again while Dante draws his sword once more with a spin, the two stare at each other for a moment before rushing in at each other Dante attempts to impale the devil, but Argosax blocks the attack and parries it knocking Dante’s sword out of his hand and high into the air. The demon stabs forward with his other Katar impaling nothing but the air and looks around for his foe which is no where in sight. Moments later the fiery devil is staring down the barrel of .45 with arcs of blue lightning arcing around silver pistol Ivory.
“Jackpot!” says Dante as he unleashes a charge shot into Argosax’s skull causing it to shatter into orange red glass-like shards along with the rest of his body after which Rebellion finally hits the ground planting into it upright and swaying a little.

Dante twirls Ivory putting the gun back into its holster and grabs Rebellion spinning it onto his back sheathing it. He looks around the area and sees nothing but flames in the distance as far as the eye can see amidst the black sky and charred earth however no portal back to the human world remains.
“Looks like I’ll be takin’ the long way home,” replies Dante as he walks over to the blue motorcycle hops onto it firing up the engine and burns out riding towards the flames in the distance, “Yeah, let’s go all the way to hell!”

Yeah this entire fanfic is essientially going to tell the story of Dante's Inferno with DMC characters. Some think the idea is brilliant while others I'm sure think I am killing the original by writing this. Apparently they are overlooking the fact that I enjoyed the original so much that I am translating it to another medium to spread the word so to say on this amazing story. If someone doesn't like the story I can understand that, but "killing" the original is a bit of an overstatement since I am ovviously trying to pay it a homage and tip my hat if you to the original by writing this.

Edit: There is some mild language in this next chapter.

Chapter 1: The Forest Whispers My Name
As Dante rides the flames in distance get ever nearer causing him to speed up, pop a wheelie and jump through the massive flames emerging in a dark forest filled with dead black and grey trees. Leaving behind him the large circle of flames along with the battle arena where he fought Argosax, Dante speeds on through The Dark Wood of Error without a glance back. Following the dirty cobble stone path through the forest Dante notices the gas gauge reads empty, but continues on regardless. As he rides he notices a dark object in the side mirror getting closer and closer so Dante speeds up however the animal persists to gain on him. He draws Ebony with his left hand and fires a few bullets back as the shadow disappears then puts his pistol away. Moments later the dark being is back on the path pursuing Dante again causing him to pull the throttle as far back as the handle will go urging the motorcycle on as flames burst from the exhaust for a moment meanwhile he shoots more bullets back redrawing his gun. The shadow disappears and Dante hears movement through the dark forest to the right seeing a single pair of glowing green eyes, he fires to the right and it stops. Now comes the rustling sounds of something moving fast along the left, looking Dante sees a pair of green eyes again and fires Ebony to the left creating silence once again. An instant later a dark grey leopard with black dots jumps onto the path behind Dante gaining on him despite having the throttle locked.

“Well I guess there’s no other way around this,” says Dante as he jumps up onto the motorcycles seat spinning around drawing his other pistol facing the best and unleashing a rain of bullets at it. The leopard dodges from left to right still running rather fast, but Dante still manages to hit his target causing the beast to fall behind a little jumping into the cover of the forest. Dante spins around and sits down again regaining control the motorcycle as the leopard jumps out of the thicket right next to him attempting to sink is sharp teeth into Dante’s leg instead getting a few bullets in the mouth followed by a number in the side. The beast falls behind and jumps into the forest on the opposite side once more. This time as it jumps out it swings a paw at the devil hunter who swerves to the right avoiding the swipe while firing bullets at the leopards legs from Ebony causing it trip injured. As Dante speeds on leaving the feline behind he sends a few complimentary bullets backwards as a parting gift ensuring that the leopard bites the dust.

The son of Sparda continues to ride through the forest disturbing a flock of ravens sending them up into the red-orange horizon that fades to black above blanketed by a grey overcast. Up ahead to the left is a pair of orange eyes following Dante who swerves to the right barely avoiding the lunge from a large dark red lion with a black mane. Drawing his pistols again Dante fires at the large beast causing it to roar with rage shaking the surrounding area, but Dante remains steady as the lion gives chase. It pounces again from behind and Dante thwarts its advance with a rain of bullets standing backwards on the motorcycle seat causing the lion to fall back roaring once more. The mighty bellow forces even the bullets from Ebony and Ivory to a halt as Dante returns to a sitting position again steadying the bike. He speeds up putting some distance between him and the giant cat who cannot keep up having sacrificed strength for agility. After Dante has put a good distance between him and his foe he hits the breaks coming to a stop while doing a 180 and takes out Ivory looking down the sight at the lion still perusing him. When the beast is 100 Meters (approximately 110 Yards) from Dante he fires a single bullet at it hitting it in the head. The lion merely shakes off the bullet receiving a second from Dante, but being just as unaffected by it. So Dante charges up a shot with Ivory and fires it at the animal hitting it square between the eyes landing a fatal shot to the brain as the lion trips into a skidding halt. Dante spins his pistol putting it away and turns the motorcycle around doing another 180 smoking the tires racing away as the lion stops a few feet from where Dante was previously sitting.

Soon the forest begins to thin revealing a rocky barren area where the blood red moon is visible in the dark sky now that the clouds have also cleared. In the distance is a broad tall cone-like rock formation the path of which is blocked by a large dark blue wolf that snaps at Dante as he passes causing him to swerve to the right driving him back into another forested area. He spins the bike around to a halt, flips the kickstand and dismounts as a pair of brilliant blue eyes walk towards him the body of which is veiled by the darkness of the forest. Dante puts a hand on his sword’s handle ready for a fight as the eyes move closer belonging to a dark humanoid figure who turns out to be a young woman in her mid 20’s garbed in a dark blue dress that is tattered and torn. Various cuts and bruises adorn her body, as she collapses down onto the ground Dante rushes to her aid crouching down and holding her in his arms gazing into the her bright blue eyes that seem to glow with a light that is both eerie and beautiful at the same time.
“You know it’s not everyday a woman falls into my arms,” says Dante as the woman whispers to him in a weak cracking voice, “Please…help…me.”

Dante smirks, “I know the just cure for you.” reaching back and pulling out Ivory firing a shot into the woman’s chest right as she transforms into a werewolf and tries to take a bite out of his neck. Dante stands up drawing his other pistol aiming it at the werewolf as she stands up herself.
“Funny thing is every time I save a lady they pay me back by trying to kill me. Looks like you’re no exception.” replies the devil hunter as he fires a number of bullets at the she-wolf dancing around the area avoiding her sharp claw slashes at him before side stepping an angered scissor swipe and drawing Rebellion. He swings and the beast grabs a hold of Dante’s sword blocking the blow so he retaliates by drawing Ebony shooting her again then unleashing a five swing combo when she releases the blade. She swings with one arm then the other in succession releasing a five slash combo of her own which Dante avoids by spinning around while moving to her left. As he does so his red trench coat swings out getting a single small rip in it from one of the werewolf’s claws.
“You bitch!” blurts out Dante swinging at the she-wolf. She back flips avoiding the swing, but gets stabbed by Dante’s follow up Stinger followed by a Prop Shredder, a series of fast vertical swings as Dante spins Rebellion around the palm of his hand. Afterwards he swings the sword down diagonally to the left then horizontally to the right bringing the sword up and around behind him grabbing it with both hands to deliver the final death blow. The she-wolf back flips once more avoiding the attack and backs away howling up at the blood red moon transforming completely into a wolf with dark blue fur.

The transformation provides an added boost of speed and agility helping her avoid Dante’s sword swings however she cannot seem to touch the devil hunter herself. As the wolf stands up on her hind legs swinging with one paw then the other Dante back flips himself going into a handstand and flipping over landing in a crouched position avoiding the attack completely while putting some room between him and the canine. The wolf rears up and springs into the air towards Dante baring both fangs and claws. Dante stands his ground lifting his sword above him impaling the wolf through the chest her own attack killing her. Dante then flings the beast off his blade before it can spill blood on him sheathing his sword and hopping back onto the motorcycle ridding off into the forest leaving the she-wolf behind in a pool of crimson.

The devil hunter rides through the forest for a little bit until it stops abruptly revealing a rocky hillside and before long Dante comes to a giant the skull, the mouth of which is a cave leading into darkness behind the metal grate. He stops for a moment wondering how to get in and notices there is an inscription carved into the skulls forehead reading:
I am the way into the city of woe.
I am the way to a forsaken people.
I am the way into eternal sorrow.
Sacred justice moved my architect.
I was raised here by divine omnipotence,
Primordial love and ultimate intellect.
Only those elements time cannot wear
Were made before me, and beyond time I stand.
Abandon all hope ye who enter here.

“Whatever. Talk about a longwinded ‘keep out’ sign,” replies Dante as the gate lifts providing him entrance. He continues on past The Gate of Hell into the darkness beyond.

Chapter II: Hell Awaits
Dante rides through a dimly lit brown rocky area underground peering down at the gas gage again which is resting on the pin just below the empty line, but figures he’ll deal with that problem when it arises. Continuing on he comes upon a bunch of souls aimlessly chasing a large wavering banner, meanwhile wasps and hornets constantly chase and sting them drawing blood. In life they went after things only for their own benefit neglecting to choose a side between good and evil. Sliding a little on the maggots that litter the ground Dante pays no mind to the fallen souls. As he speeds by them it causes the banner to get thrown violently in another direction off to the side causing the souls to change direction as abruptly as the banner continuing their pursuit oblivious to all else.

The wasps and hornets also change direction following the spirits, one of them getting splattered on the windshield of Dante’s motorcycle. He flicks it off triggering the appearance of a number of flying Beelzebubs that give chase. Dante draws his pistols spinning around jumping onto the seat firing at the flying insects. After finally killing one he jumps up onto the handle bars to keep the motorcycle steady while he attacks, though the bike seems to have quite good balance as it is. Taking down two more Beelzebubs to either side of him Dante twists his left foot forward on the throttle keeping the motorcycle from slowing down too much. He kills one more Beelzebub behind him it also taking quite the number of bullets to kill just like its comrades, before Dante finally jumps back down on the seat putting his pistols away and riding normal once more. He hardly has time to get comfortable as three more giant flying insects pursue the devil causing him to pull out his trusty sawed off double barrel shotgun, Coyote-A shooting one Beelzebub to the right causing it to explode into a burst of maggots, before doing the same thing to the one on his left and then the one behind him. As Dante rides a single Beelzebub in front flies at him head on. Simply disposing of it with a powerful shotgun blast Dante ducks avoiding the spray of maggots looking up to find a group of green non-flying Beelzebubs blocking his path.

The devil hunter stops, dismounts, then dashes to avoid the spray of maggots the Beelzebub’s fire out of their large green abdomens before impaling one with a Stinger. Dante pulls out the Coyote-A again blasting the giant bug off his sword killing it before pointing the shotgun behind him under his right arm pit shoving into another Beelzebub’s mouth blowing its red head clean off. He rolls to the side causing one bug to spray another with maggots that begin to eat away its body as four more flying insects join the battle. Dante launches a fat green Beelzebub into the air with an upwards swing jumping in the air himself unleashing an Arial Rave combo on the bug as the flying insects surround him. Hitting the bug one last time to keep it in the air Dante hits the ground drawing his shotgun again and shoots the green Beelzebub causing it to explode spraying maggots all over the flying insects damaging them as well. He rolls out the way avoiding the spray himself killing the last green bug with a combo dashing out of the way as the remaining flying insects assault him instead hitting the spot where Dante was previously standing. He throws his sword at the blue insects and it spins around trough the air killing them before returning to Dante’s hand. He mounts the motorcycle putting his weapons away and rides off before the light grey maggots from the flying Beelzebub’s have even hit the ground.

Continuing on in his journey Dante travels further into the dim depths of hell and after a little bit comes upon a river to the right of him. This is the river Archeron that separates the Vestibule of Hell from the actual circles below where the sinners are tormented and demons reign. Soon he comes upon a shore where a large wooden pirate ship is docked waiting to ferry dead souls across the river. Fastened to the bow of the ship is the skeleton boatman Charon whose eye sockets have glowing red flames in them. In his hand he wields a heavy metal oar that is both large and rusted. Noticing Dante as he dismounts the motorcycle Charon calls out questioningly, “What’s this? A mortal, a mere human in the land of the dead!? No. There’s something different about you. I sense demonic powers.” After sizing Dante up for a moment it hits him, “Silver hair, red coat; surely you must be the Son of Sparda.”

“Well if you’ve heard of me how about a lift across,” replies Dante casually.

Laughing slightly amused Charon responds, “I cannot let you cross these shores Son of Sparda for I'd feel the wrath of many an angry demon.”

“Yeah… well… that's gonna happen anyway if you don't get outta my way,” rebuttals Dante drawing his sword with a spin and walking onto the wooden dock.

Charon swings his heavy oar horizontally at Dante who back flips out of the way and throws his sword at the skeleton. It spins around wildly hitting the skeletons boney chest and face before returning to Dante’s hand. Charon then spits a large blue fireball at the devil hunter following up with another wide horizontal sweep. Dante dashes out of the way avoiding the fire ball and begins firing at Charon jumping over the horizontal swing stilling firing bullets at the skeleton. Angered the boatman swings his heavy oar down vertically attempting to smash his foe, instead only succeeding in putting a hole through the wooden dock. This time Charon tries to stab Dante with his blunt oar to at least knock the wind out of him, but the devil hunter jumps up onto the metal oar, runs up the handle guns blazing and jumps into the air in front of the skeleton unleashing an aerial combo. As he lands on the ground the large pirate ship turns and unleashes a barrage of cannon balls at Dante. He back flips avoiding one, dodge rolls another and then executes his signature summersault going into a handstand and flipping himself back onto this feet. Doing this a number of times he summersaults over each of the remaining cannon balls which fire in a straight predictable line from the ship. Finally blocking Charon’s vertical swing with his sword Dante uses his super human strength to shove the heavy metal oar off of his blade firing at Charon as his skeletal arms fly back helpless oar in hand. Using the backswing to his advantage the boatman stabs his oar down into the dock diagonally causing Dante to run up the metal chunk once more and up onto Charon’s arm pointing Ebony and Ivory at each eye socket no more than a foot away.

“You ready to take me across yet or do you need more persuading?” asks Dante confidently.

Charon unconvinced replies, “You may have bested me, but I must not take you across,” causing Dante to execute a High Time attack jumping into the air knocking off Charon’s giant skull before juggling it like a soccer ball. As he does so Charon’s muffled yells can be heard, “Alright! Alright! Fine! I shall…take…you…across!”

“Good,” replies Dante satisfied as he kicks the skull into the air one last time and bicycle kicks it back onto the skeletal body. The skull spins around a couple of times refastening to the spine as Charon yells back in anger,
“Arrrggghh! Do not get your hopes up! I am only taking you across to suffer the wrath of others who will no doubt succeed where I have failed!”

With that the large wooden pirate ship turns and lowers its plank allowing Dante to board the ship along with the motorcycle. Once aboard they set off down the dark black-blue river Archeron hell bound.
