Something that really, really bothers me about the media in the US is that they're allowed to name and show pictures of people who are "suspects" or "persons of interest" in criminal cases before any charges are even brought up or any real evidence against the person is found.
This bothers me because often, some or all of the suspects or persons of interest at the beginning of an investigation are completely innocent of the crime. However, their names and faces are still associated with the crime. This is especially bad in cases of child abuse and sexual crimes. Many people have been fired from jobs and alienated from friends and family who only pay attention to that initial suspect list paraded all over the newscasts. The news also has never, that I've seen, said when someone was removed from a suspect list unless it was a celebrity or high-profile government official or business executive, so the people who see the initial story about who is a suspect never find out that the person was cleared. In fact, we often never find out who actually committed a crime from the news; media interest often wanes before the investigation is complete, let alone a trial held and completed. So, often, all we get is the initial story of some horrific crime and who the initial suspects are.
I'm all for freedom of the press, but only when it doesn't infringe upon other people's rights. Personally, I think the press needs to be held responsible a bit more often, since they obviously don't hold themselves responsible.
benjerman franklen once something like this: better to live free and chance of danger, than to live without and limited safty.
I beleive that if we want to have freedom, then we all have to live with a little fear. I cant put myself in those peoples shoes who are being alienated, but I think that it would be better to have freedom of the press.
I'd feel violated. But at the same time, you can't solely blame the media if your reputation is tarnished. Especially if they even cover that you were ultimately innocent.
People have to find it in themselves to realize you didn't do it. You weren't at fault, so there should be no disrespect toward you. Though this is too much to hope for, it's something that should be expected in a "fair world."
