Title: Perspectives

One thing I've often wondered about is how certain things that I've learned about are taught elsewhere. Specifically, historical events that opposing sides would obviously see in a very different light.

There are more than a few British members here. Would any of you indulge my curiosity and tell me the basics of what you're taught about the American Revolution, when the colonies split from the empire? Are any of the key figures or reasons behind the rebellion talked about?

Also, for those of you not in the US or Great Britain, is this even taught in history classes at all?

I'm from French Polynesia so I can vouch that it is taught almost everywhere. Most people seem to think I live in the Northeast... but no, French Polynesia.

Ooh... that's a good question. I'm curious now too.

I have never been taught anything ever about the american revolution and if I have it wasn't a big enough unit for me to remember.

It's not really something thats important over here, we usually just learn about our own culture and the aboriginals and stuff.

I took history and I did learn about America between 1920 and 1945 in terms of warfare, economy and race. But mostly it was about British imperialism.
(brb time to take over a cup of tea)

I also though this, lol, ever since on xbox live talking to a french kid, who said that most french know that bush did 9/11 LOL. I agree with them, but if the kid says most people believe that, and had another french adult there to back it up, Im starting to wonder. WTF are they teaching in other countries, cuz I should go there and learn dammit.

I'm British and I've never been taught about the American revolution in school, the things I know about it, I have learned on my own accord (which isn't alot really). Like Restless soul, l learned about American history from about 1920 to 1945.
I mostly got taught about British history, Russian revolution, the world wars and the cold war.

Interesting that England seems to bypass teaching about the loss of one of their major colonies. Did you learn about any of the other revolutions in other British colonies? Also curious as to what they highlighted during the Roaring 20's and WWII eras.

Durus - January 8, 2008 09:43 PM (GMT)
Well I got taught very little about about the British empire, its mostly modern 20th century history, though I got taught about the English civil war, and Middle ages Britain in lesser detail .
The main areas I got taught on about America was the prohibition age, wall street crash and the depression and Roosevelt and his "new deal", and thats mostly it.

maybe their embarressed?
Im english, and I know about that stuff, and well, I dont think it's something to hide.

Ayesuku - January 10, 2008 10:14 PM (GMT)
I don't suppose anyone over there still in school could try mentioning it to their history teacher, just to see what he/she might say?

Stephanie - January 11, 2008 01:59 AM (GMT)
None of my history teachers would know anything about it, they only know what they are meant to be teaching nothing else, and I never got tought about any of that british or american history so teachers over here I'm pretty sure know jack.

kingtard - January 11, 2008 08:17 PM (GMT)
it's the same here, teachers know only what their supposed to, everything else is a hobby. Like me, I read up on history daily =]

(Just read up on the Knights Templar, they are sick!!!!)
