Title: Should I get it?
Durus - December 19, 2007 09:15 PM (GMT)
I've been putting of getting this game for along time, I'm thinking of buying it in a week or two (January sales!), should I get it? is it worth it? and is it much different to previous final fantasies?, i.e. FFX.

Mixed reactions. It is a good game. I say its worth buying. The character development is incredibly weak. The plot is decent. I loved the gameplay but it wasn't for everybody.

I'd recommend it. It certainly has a FF feel, though has plenty new to offer as well. I honestly think the main reason most people are more ambivalent about it than other FF's is because the main characters aren't as well developed as in other FF's. That's not the focus of the game, though; the plot and history are. The characters are basically just the latest to be involved in something that's been going on for a very long time, something that's far larger than just them. The rest - gameplay, graphics, music, etc. - are all the exceptional quality we've come to expect from a FF game.

I got it today for x-mas, managed to play it for about an hour, so far, so good.
The new battle system takes time to get used to though, i much prefer the battle system of the old FF's.
Anything specific i should know? like keeping a certain item, or doing a certain thing?

Buy potions. They're pretty damn expensive but not nearly half as expensive as the xp you lose when you die. Always keep one on hand, it makes the difference between life and death when some goblin decides to surprise attack you.

Potions are a good tip, especially right off the bat when all you have is Vaan and eventually Penelo. Also, work up those combo chains as often as possible. Money is hard to come by in the game, and good equipment and new spells are absolutely necessary. There will be long periods where combo chains are nearly impossible to get (different creature types mixed together too much), so spend some time grinding money/exp whenever you get the chance, and use the steal skill as much as possible. There are a few very obvious areas to get chains in as the game progresses, so take full advantage of them.
Also, watch the levels of the enemies if you head into a new area. There are several areas you can walk into at far too low a level; you can come back later. Most of these areas that are accessible earlier than you're ready for are for the hunts. Which leads into another tip; do the hunts. You get some money and good loot from them. They also open up some very useful items, spells and skills in the bazaar, which end up being far more valuable than the gil you earn from the hunt rewards.
Another good way to make money is to spend it on the Forgotten Grimoires/Monographs in the bazaar. These are expensive and only open up after you do certain things in the game, but they increase the frequency and value of the loot from certain types of enemies. See
this site for information; no spoilers and the info is right there without having to dig through a bunch of other crap. There are a few tricks out there to make gil as well, but I'll let you discover those on your own.

Thanks for the tips guys, im sure I'll need them.
Haven't been able to play on it much lately, got to the Leviathan ship, got stuck at the end with those two judges and friends...
I'm sure I'll get past them soon.

If you're on the one I think you are, there's an easy trick to rack up some gil and exp, assuming you have a save point prior to where you're at.
In the area of the ship where there are alarms you can set off that call soldiers, simply keep setting off alarms, chaining up the soldier kills. You can take as long as you want between battles, so it's a perfect place to grind. YOu have to do this BEFORE you complete the rescue, though.

get it, it is awesome and very addicting. it is unique in ways different from other final fantasys. Ive spent more than 80 hours and im only about 60-70% done with the game.
TheMissingCloud: Is this better? Sorry i'm on your bad side.

^If you are going to rezz a topic then at least add something to it worthwhile that is a decent paragraph not two words. I appoligize if I seem a bit harsh, but your failure to respect our rules has struck a pissey note with me.
Durus if you have the money I say look into it, maybe even borrow it from a friend to play to see if you want to buy it first. Also get your arse back here and get active again =P
