Title: Final Fight: Hatred?
Description: SPOILERS

In the final fight against Vayne, how many people actually hated him? I remember being pumped for the final battle simply because of the previous cutscene... but I can't really say I hated Vayne at the end of the game like I had in other games. Thoughts?

Highlight below to see my reply. Spoilers included.

Considering that he slaughtered all but one of his brothers, murdered his father, started a war that caused untold suffering and attempted to destroy the capital of a nation he had already conquered with all the people and even his own soldiers inside... It was hard not to feel some strong negative emotions towards the guy. Vayne made for a great villain. I liked him in the same way I liked Darth Vader (original trilogy at least) and Saruman; bad guys that kicked so much ass that it was quite the victory when they were overcome.

I actually had more sympathy for Cid than Vayne. Vayne was suave and smooth, but it was part of his calculated, cold-hearted plot to conquer all and destroy all who resisted him. Cid was partially insane, but he had his reasons for doing what he did. Putting the fate of humanity into human hands rather than those of some other-worldly, self-proclaimed gods is something many people would do with a clear conscious, no matter what it would take to accomplish that task. While I didn't agree with his methods, I can hardly say that his basic purpose was wrong.

Yea, Vayne had a lot of motivation for the characters of FFXII to kill him... but as a player I just didn't care. WHenever you write that stuff you have to give both the characters and the player motivations. Often times you care about what the characters care about BECAUSE you know so much about them and love them. FFXII had fairly weak main characters so I found myself without personal motivations. But yea Cid was a much sadder story than Vayne

My motivation is the same as the characters' motivation, except that I also like to beat the final boss to see what the end of the game is like. I really don't see why I "have" to separate the two, especially since it's an opinion.
