Title: Your Thoughts on Sephiroth
BustaMo - January 31, 2007 05:55 PM (GMT)
Sephiroth was someone good turned evil. He started off as a great warrior, but I think the mix of 1.) Him being infused with Jenova Cells as well as 2.) being lied to about who his real parents were, drove him over the edge to insanity and power-grabbing. He had the skills and knowledge of a legendary warrior, but a few mishaps had him turning his back on everyone except Jenova and he didn't care who he hurt along the way.
What is your take on Sephiroth?
Good...Evil...Both...Corrupt...Confused...Or a penguin in a tuxedo?

Just confused. It's like you said, he was ok until he got to know who he really was. What he really was. And that, combined iwth Jenova cells...
But the penguin in a tuxedo is highly probable as well.

Corrupted and Confused. Actually, strike the confused part. He wasn't confused about ANYthing. His knowledge of his origins and such angered him so much he was then corrupted, and thus Evil.
I don't think the lies about his parents would have made that much of a difference, in the long run, if he knew beforehand. He went crazy because of JENOVA (and to a certain degree the control she/it had over him) not because of lies he was told.
Do you really think that he wouldnb't have tried to take over the world if he already knew? He wasn't angry about being lied to... he was angry that his "mother" was stopped before she completed her goal, and the Cetra were all wiped out. It was when he learned all THAT stuff that he went crazy, because he learned that he himself is connected to it.
Sephiroth really isn't hard to figure out... I don't see why people are always so confused about him.

sephiroth is my favorite final fantasy character. it was cool that he looked so badass but that is not why i liked him. he is the fallen hero and that is cool. not just that but he was a legendary hero. h-e-r-o. meaning that he wasn't just some badass with a sword. he was a protector of the people. he was their entire support structure. he was what they believed in. he was sephiroth. it is even implied in his name, that he was so revered, it was like he was an angel sent from above.
if you think of cloud's real history, when he returned to nibelheim he wasn't a member of SOLDIER. he was just another shinra lackie. but even then sephiroth cared about him and knew him as a friend. he knew enough to ask if he was anxious about being home for the first time in a long time. and he was worried about him when cloud got naucious on the roadtrip there. and it was because he was such a great man that it really meant a lot when he disappeared from the world for five years, only to return a savage killer.
you simply cannot say that sephiroth was confused. no one of such a saintly level like him would simply just go on a killing spree because he was confused. you cannot think of sephiroth as just some guy. he was the people's light. and that is what drove him insane. he was the "child" of the calamity from the sky. the evil being that came to earth to kill and destroy everyone was his mother. the irony was so great that it drove him over the edge. he thought he was the protector of the world when really he is the only legacy of the world's greatest dormant evil.
and he certainly wasn't corrupt. no one offered him anything. hojo was corrupt.

He was corrupted by his mother. The very essence of his being, once discovered is what corrupted him. That was obvious from playing the game.
Angry Beaver - February 7, 2007 11:19 PM (GMT)
corrupt still is not the word i would use. it was her presence that tainted him and drove him to evil. i usually think of corrupt as bribery and power seduction. but essencially the same thing

As for the topic of Sephiroth again, I went back and saw some of the old cut-scenes of him on YouTube today from the game, and he really was a superb hero in the beginning. Fighting, character, attitude, abilites, personality, the whole shu-bang. Of course now I have the desire to go back and play through the game again, but I never follow through on my temporary gung-ho ideas.

I think he was infuriated because he couldn't find more about himself, mainly because the only person who had great knowledge of Sephiroth's background was Professor Gast, but he passed away. I just think he was searching, searching for a purpose for him to leave, trying to work out who he really is and he would try to find out more regardless of his dangerous actions.

Yuffie: He's a bitch, duh!
Me: Bitchy. Beautiful. Cloud's one true love. 'Nuff said. Not to mention insanely masochistic. I mean, he was totally babying Cloud in AC. Then let Cloud kill him. Rah...

Heh, sorry. *is a spaz* Well, first of all, Sephiroth behaves in quite the bitchy manner on a number of occasions (whether or not this is actually his fault can be debated.) I am one of the many Cloud/Sephy shippers in the world. I believe that Sephiroth was completely owning/going easy on Cloud (simultaneously to emphasize his total power) then merely let Cloud win in the end (killing him) making him very masochistic.
Understand?
cloud leonheart - February 16, 2007 03:25 AM (GMT)
Sephiroth seemed too sure of himself to be confused, i thing he was agood guy turned douche bag.
