Title: Chaos Legion

TheMissingCloud - July 14, 2008 05:34 PM (GMT)
Anyone heard of this game? Anyone played it? Thoughts, opinions, rants?

I just picked up this game again for the first time a long time as the first time I played it I got to Stage 3, got stuck because I got my arse handed to me a couple times and gave up for the moment, which turned into several months. Well after deciding I wanted to play a new game that I haven't completed that was challenging I popped this into the PS2 last night and actually took the time this time to learn how to use the funky battle system.

It says on the back of the case that "if you liked Devil May Cry, you'll love this game" I say if you love Devil May Cry you might like this game. I love DMC and Chaos Legion does not feel like the DMC ripoff many people say it is. It’s so much more limiting than DMC and just a whole different ballgame in general. Basically if you like fighting lots enemies or trying to play the one-man army with a limited set of moves you'll like this game. It's also challenging and a tad bit of a strategy game.

For those who haven't played it you play as Sieg Wahreit immediately launched into a battle searching for the evil villian Victor Dealcroix who wishes to unleash hell (Not literally this isn’t DMC remember) and has obviously read Sephiroth's book on "how to be a badass villian" and taken it too literally (silver hair, katana, evil scene in flames). There is a backstory and a relation between the villian and the hero Sieg as friends though not much else is revealed til much later in the game I assume seeing as you just see those two fighting in a Squall vs Seifer like battle as the prologue. Come to think of it Sieg looks sorta like Squall with red hair wearing Seifer's trench coat...sweet moogle cakes this is the Squall vs Sephiorth battle you've been waiting for SG, go play this game!

As far as the battle system goes you are pitted up against many enemies at once and you have the choice between slaughtering them solo, which usually results in a hasty death. The other option is as the name suggest to summon a small legion of demons I guess they are to aid you in kickin' ass though the trade off is your character sacrifices speed and strength when fighting as a legion as opposed to fighting alone. Considering the fact that Sieg deals crap for damage on mechanical enemies and has F all for moves you are pretty much forced to learn the battle system involving the legion. As you progress you unlock new legions. You start off with just a sword legion which excels at killing organic enemies like Sieg then you get an archer group which is very useful for those pesky mechanical enemies. With the experience earned from battle you use that level up your legions making them stronger, buying abilities for them/you and upgrading the number you can summon at one time. Exp is not shared though, each legion you use earns exp when they fight which has its pros and cons. Like the Fort Condor game in FFVII if you manage to take out a groups captain they all fall, but getting to the captain is usually 80% of the battle seeing as they keep respawning enemies till they decide they are tired.

I haven't completed the game yet, I'm only up to sage 7. I'm also not really big on the battle system as even though upgrading the legions gives you some new abilities Sieg is still rather limited in the combos he can perform and before long this really does feel like a senseless hack and slash game especially where I'm at considering I spent 30 minutes that felt like 2 hours fighting enemies that would not stop respawning. I accidentally went back too far and had to refight some big brute guys that I already had a tough time with, then after fighting countless enemies waiting for the gate to the next area to open I finally walk up it tired of doing the same thing over and over only to have three more brutes spawn, which I imagine I have to kill to make the seemingly endless wave of enemies disappear for good. This game is sorta like KH: CoM for me, I'm not big on the battle system and after a while it becomes tedious, repetitious and annoying but I'm trudging though it for the story which I like. Seeing as there are no real in-game FMV's or even cutscenes save for "look this door open go there" it's pretty much like you are trudging through a stage just to see another FMV and learn more of the story. At least for me it is. I imagine once I get all the legions leveled up to the max and thus can use the abilities they give Sieg without having that legion exquipped then I imaged I will have more fun playing solo, but this is no DMC by far.

I used to have Chaos Legion, note I used to have it.

If I remember correctly I got quite far in it but the further I got the more tedious and boring the game became, until I stopped playing it and decided to sell it. All the levels felt the same and all the monsters felt the same too from what I remember becuase we are talking a fair few years ago now. I remember it being one of the first couple of games I got with my PS2... It was no where near as good as I thought it would be which is a shame because I really like the character designs. The girl with the guns was cool, but I don't remember being able to play as her which is a shame.

I much prefered DMC to Chaos Legion. I don't even remember the storyline which is a bad thing I just remember, like you said TMC, spending tedious amounts of time killing off enemies.

It wasn't my cup of tea and I agree with your changing of the statement on the front it should have been "If you like DMC you might like this".

My take on the quote on the back case would be "If you like this, you'll love Devil May Cry!" As Dante's adventures part 1 and 3 are much better. Maybe it should be 'If you liked the DMC games and want more games in the same genre, buy this...but try Onimusha first" but that's not as catchy.

I played a demo of the game and couldn't really get into it. It just lacked certain little something that DMC has. Maybe the fact that Dante just oozes coolness. I do actually feel like it's a DMC rpi-off, which isn't a bad thing per se (God of War is a DMC rip-off) but unlike GoW Chaos hasn't got nearly as much going for it. It's all a bit generic really.
