Anyone caught any of the new series Lucky Star yet? We've been watching it in anime club and holy smokes, it is brilliant! The first fifteen minutes of the first episode have three of the main characters discussing how to eat various types of food. It's a slice-of-life schoolgirl kinda thing, like Azumanga Daioh, so if you liked that you'll be well pleased.
There're four main characters, but unfortunately I can't think of their names right now. One is a girl with long pink hair and glasses; she's the darn-near-perfect, smart, cute one. Then there's the brash one: a girl with long purple hair that's always getting on the other two character's case about doing their schoolwork and stuff; she's the voice-of-reason one. She's got a twin sister, though true to anime, they don't look too much alike. The twin sister has short purple hair and is the ditzy, slow one; think Osaka, but maybe not too much. (No one dare approach the throne of Mistress Osaka!) And my favorite character is a short, undergrown girl (all these girls are supposedly 16-17 years old) with extremely long blue hair (oh Lord, Strongbad was right about Japanese cartoons.) She's so funny because she never does her homework and yet manages to get by in school and always has a cute, catgirl-style mouth. Best of all, she is an otaku. She's always spending most of her free time gaming online (a la World of Warcraft), reading manga, and generally watching anime. Out of the first five or six episodes, there're four references to Haruhi Suzumiya alone (direct references, the show and characters are named.) A few other anime references have also come up, namely several blatant displays of Bonta-kun from FUMOFFU.
The show is really funny and at the end it a little segment hosted by a character that I guess is supposed to be representative of anime pop idols in general (she's a little odd) and a guy that makes occasional appearances in the episodes. The opening theme has a cute little dance number whose lyrics talk about schoolgirl fukus and the ending part is the four main girls in a kareoke room singing different songs (occasionally said songs are anime theme songs, but I don't think they're from actual series. Or maybe they are.) Anyway, check this series; you probably won't be disappointed.
This show is the new "Seinfeld Anime", in that it's an anime about absolutely nothing. That and the fact that it is completely random, features cameos from some awesome shows (Cromartie, Pani Poni Dash, Haruhi, etc), and has an Otaku (Otakette?) main character combine to make this an awesome show. Plus it is completely Lolilicious (Kago luvs the Lolis). And the opening puts the Haruhi dance to shame (Kago has most of it in GIFs). And thats not even including Lucky Channel, featuring the ever cute and perky Super Bitch Loli Goddess Akira! How can you not help but love something with a face that cute and a mouth that foul?
And the end songs are actual anime theme songs (Episode 3 is the opening to FMP Fumoffu).
Actually, I think both the Lucky Star and Haruhi OPs are equally cool (I really wanna learn them both.) It's just so fun to watch this show in club because always someone will ask why the heck we're watching this. But I love it. I don't know, I think that since Slayers was my first anime (that I really got into) it installed in me a deep appreciation for the amusing (thanks Gourry.) Oh, and I can't help but think that those four girls' conversations are more or less the same sort of discussions my friends and I had in high school.
