Title: Second Chance

darkillusion - December 28, 2003 03:17 AM (GMT)
Okay, I sort of have an idea for something, but it might not be that good. I'm just going to write it off the top of my head, k? I'll write more if you guys like it.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Second Chance

Gaia walked briskly down a street close to her apartment. She tried to keep her mind off of the fact that was Christmas Eve and she was all alone once more. Her father had took off yet again, and promised to be back by Christmas. Broken promise #493 in Gaia's life. Jake had went away with his father for the holidays. If Ed didn't hate her before, he would now that all the communication they were exchanging lately were 3 second awkward glances. Sam...Sam. She couldn't even think about Sam, she was SO stupid. If Gaia wanted one thing for Christmas it would be a time machine to fix all the stupid accusations and heart ache in her life.
Doughnuts would be fine, too, though.

Gaia heard a rustling in a bush across the street. Her ears perked up as she waited anxiously. A good ass-kicking is all she needs right now. The bastard might as well wrap himself up because a fight brings out the perfect amout of holiday cheer in Gaia. Then again, the right amout of cheer for Gaia is about -100 on the cheer-o-meter of regular people. Gaia breathed in a wisp of air and watched the little cloud of smoke evaporate into the sky as she exhaled. More rustlings, she saw shadows carress the picket fence of a house in very bad shape. Gaia swiftly walked over, crouching, keeping herself in the shadows. Her eyes darted left and right as her ears went on high alert. She could feel her blood exploding inside of her, excitement creeping up her spine.

Gaia peeked over the bush only to see a man mugging a woman, barely 25, with feathery blond hair and deep violet eyes filled which fear. The man was enveloped by the shadows which prevented Gaia from seeing his face. She grabbed his shoulders firmly as possible and flew him off the woman. Gaia placed her foot tightly against his throat, preventing him from breathing.

"Get lost!" she spat at the choking bafoon.

He choked for air and grabbed her leg, twisting her over so she fell on top of him. He started reaching in her pockets and around her blouse. Either he was feeling her up or this was a two-for-one special mug. Gaia shifted over so her hand had enough room and bolted up her arm backwards, giving a nice blow to the creep's nose. He lost grip as he flung his hands up to his bloody nose.

"Bitch!" he cried.

Gaia sprung backup, but the mugger wasn't long to follow, almost immediately as he stood, Gaia delivered a kick to his head, sending him back down. This was too easy. She didn't need to finish this guy off, he was already out cold. Gaia looked at the women, still frightened but eyes now a soft shade of lavender.

"Run." Gaia spoke loudly.

The women nodded and gulped, "Thank you, so much." and ran as Gaia said.

Gaia felt drowsy but wasn't going to black out so close to home. She ran as the wind blew through her hair for 5 minutes before she entered the darkened hallway of her apartment room and passed out on the couch.

When Gaia awakened a mere 10 minutes after, she opened her eyes just for a few seconds, the lights of the tree with nothing underneath it stinging her eyes. She dosed off to sleep shortly.

She awoke to the depressing shine of light illuminating the room. Rubbing her eyes, she noticed a small gift under the tree. It was silver with a beautiful blue ribbon - her mother's favourite colours. Gaia scattered off the couch to the gift and unwrapped it, curiousity spilling into her veins.

It seemed to be a walkie-talkie. She was utterly confused and pressed down on the red button.

"Hello?" Gaia asked, uncertain.

"Hello, dear. It's been so long since we've spoken." an airy, elegant voice sang.

"Who the hell is this?" Gaia asked, irritated and almost certain of it being a stupid prank joke.

The voice laughed softly, "You've changed quite a bit, Gaia. It's Katia." it said, as if to be smiling with the words.

Whadda ya think? it's kinda boring at first...should I write more?

darkillusion - December 28, 2003 05:42 AM (GMT)
Yay ^_^ Okay the next chapter might be short, I'm sort of just figuring out what to do from here so bare with me!
----------------------------------------------------

Gaia would've laughed if she weren't so pissed. And she was MAJORLY pissed.

"Okay, whoever the hell you are, why would you choose CHRISTMAS to rub this in my face? You think I'm not lonely as hell WITHOUT your help?!" Gaia screamed into the walkie talkie. Her father had told her never to let your anger take over her, but when it came to her mother, Gaia couldn't help it.

Wait a minute, Gaia thought, How could anybody get into the apartment without me noticing? I'm trained to notice that kind of stuff. Unless....Oh God. It's got to be some sort of Organization. Loki? Yuri? Who?! Gaia had to know.

"Gaia, please. I know how hard this is to believe, but I need your help."

I bet you do! Gaia thought angrily, Aww, would you like to order those clones by VISA? Or whatever the shit they want with me this time. Gaia didn't want the person to know that she knew what was going on. Just then, another thought hit her.

Why would they use my mother to get to me? Especially in this situation. They would know I knew something was up. Couldn't whoever was tricking me use Jake? Or Sam? Or Ed? Why would they use such a bizzarre method to get me where they wanted?

"Gaia? Are you there?" The voice asked, with concern.

Shit! Way to let them know you're thinking...that you're on to them! Gaia silently cursed.

"I want you to prove you're my mother. I know this is some-", Gaia stopped for a moment, remembering to keep her knowledge on the downlow, "practical joke," she finished slowly.

"Alright," the voice said confidently, and began telling the story of Gaia's life.

That's it, I'm not an idiot. Gaia thought.

"Are you done?" Gaia asked rudely.

"Well, you asked," Mrs. Imposter Mother said, matter-of-factly. The fake Russian accent was only annoying Gaia further.

"Oh please, you think that any government wouldn't know all that? I was spied on my whole life! I don't know who you work for but I'm going to find out!" Gaia spat, and with that, she dropped the walkie talkie, angrily grabbed her coat and walked out the front door.

She didn't know where she was going; but that was the least of her thoughts at the moment.

darkillusion - December 28, 2003 09:45 AM (GMT)
Chapter 3

Gaia stuffed her hands in her pockets and roamed around China Town. She was thinking. Hard. She was trying to figure out how to figure out who the hell "Katia" was. Gaia eyed the windows of various windows, watching her reflection. Oh, it's no use! How am I supposed to find an effing clue in CHINA TOWN?!

Something caught her eye. In a toyshop called "Yolan's Toy Shop", was the same walkie talkie she had received this morning. Woah. I thought for sure they would've used a government gaget... In case she was being watched, she breifly ran her eyes over the package. Works for as long as 2M! Gaia read.

Wait a minute. That means they must've been close! Gaia thought excitedly. Time to bust these losers!

Gaia was already off on her feet, like she was trying to race against her shadow. In a few seconds, all Gaia could hear were her feet patting against the pavement, the roar of traffic and the distant callings of more information.

When she was close to the apartment, she began her search. An hour later she gave up all hope, stormed into her apartment angrily and feeling uncompleted. She decided to check the internet for something - anything about "Yolan's Toy Shop".

Once she had logged on, Gaia searched Google for the toyshop. She found a website about the founders of the shop. Nothing caught Gaia's eye as she roamed around the website. Then she read it,

Former Employees: David Laviant, Confidy Strung, Jack Kong... None of it mattered, except the name that stood out most - Katia Petrova. (AN: I'm just guessing it was her maiden name.)

Hm...something is connected here. The store might possibly be a front for Yuri's government. He might've used it to keep an eye on Katia during the early years she was in New York. It can't be a conincidence. Gaia's mind was thinking too hard today.

Almost instantly, the "You've got mail!" icon flashed before Gaia's eyes. Her fingers clicked the button only to appear a hidden email address. The message read:

From: unknown
To: GMoore17

Firebreather

Gaia read the single word over and over and over again but it was no use. What did it mean? Who sent it? Was it a clue, possibly? Then, a burst of memory fireworked into Gaia's brain. Firebreather...rainy nights...Dad working at CIA...mom sleeping. I would...what would I do?, Gaia thought helplessly, I would try to wake my mother up...but she never would. I would sing and jump but she wouldn't wake up. I would be lonely at night and desprate for her to stay up with me., Gaia remembered, I would be so loud at times...Katia would call me Firebreather. It was an inside joke. Who could've known about that? It was a special thing between my mother and I. Gaia shook her head, and silently moaned. All this thinking was driving her insane! Just to make matters worse the doorbell rang ear-deafingly.

Gaia reluctantly went and opened the door.

Sam.

KickBoxerGirl - December 28, 2003 05:19 PM (GMT)

Chapter 4

"Sam" Gaia was shocked to see him here.

"Um...I know this is awkward but I know I wouldn't feel right if I didn't--" Sam stuttered.

"You look shaken, come in," Gaia said quickly, so there wouldn't be too much of an awkward silence.

"Well, I shouldn't stay long. You probally have Christmas plans," Sam said once inside.

"It's fine really, my fathers not...here," Gaia said flatly.

"Oh, well I'm sure he'll be back soon..." Sam offered lamely.

"Yeah...maybe," Gaia said trying not to be the object of sympathy.

"I just came to give you this," Sam said holding out a gift wrapped in red with a gold ribbon on it, "Merry Christmas," and with a stunning smile, he turned to leave.

"Sam?"
"Yeah?"
"Would you like to go for a coffee maybe?"

Gaia's fingers had started scratching into her palm very hard, waiting for the answer.

Sam looked back and eyed Gaia intensely, "I actually...have plans."

"Oh. Okay. Um, bye." Gaia said.

"It wouldn't be open either way.

Shit! I'm so stupid. Gaia thought, cursing herself.

"I might be able to stick around for a bit..." Sam said reluctantly.

"Great! Well, if you want to..."

At least he's warming up to me.

Chapter 5

Gaia and Sam sat across from eachother in the kitchen. Every so often they'd say stuff concerning the weather or the furniture in the apartment. It was slow torture for Gaia. Each sip she took of the black coffee stung in her throat.

"Sam, come on. We need to talk." Gaia said at last, about 5 minutes later.

"We're doing that now," Sam replied, flatly.

"You know what I mean." Gaia whispered, grasping her coffee cup, not making eye contact with Sam.

"I don't think there's very much to say."

"Sam, please. You know how hard it is for me to trust people. I mean, Tatiana was the one I..." Gaia cleared her throat awkwardly, "you know..."

"Yeah." Sam replied, rudely, "you should've know you could trust me, though."

"I know," Gaia began, "and I know sorry is not enough. I will try my best to make it up to you. I swear."

"You don't have to bother," Sam replied, "I should get going, Jake should be stopping by, shouldn't he?"

Gaia's eyes, locked on her coffee, shot up and looked into Sam's eyes with so much power, it made Sam's heart get caught in his throat.

No matter how hard I try, Sam thought, I'll never be able to stop loving Gaia. So why can't I forgive her? Sam shook his head at the thought.

"How do you know Jake?" Gaia asked, snapping Sam out of the trance he seemed to be in.

"Don't worry about it," Sam replied with a half-smile, "I just wanted to let you know...that I know you're sorry. As much as I want to forgive you, I can't. Not yet. I just wish you would be able to trust me-"

"I do!" Gaia spoke loudly, inturupting Sam.

"-as much as I trust you..." Sam finished, he sighed, and spoke once more, "After all I went through because of Loki, for you, all I really ask for is trust." And love, maybe some love-making too. Sam added silently.

Gaia was speachless. He had a point, and she was too ashamed to answer. She stared helplessly into Sam's beautiful eyes. Sam could see the sorrow in Gaia's eyes, which were now the colour of the sky during a storm.

"I better leave," Sam said whispered and got up, "thank you for the coffee."

"Yeah..." Gaia half replied, very quietly. She stood and led him to the door.

Before Sam went out the door, he gave Gaia a long hug. His strong arms grasped her back with power as he layed his chin against her hair. Gaia snaked her arm around Sam's neck and buried her face into his chest, the sweet auroma of Sam sweat and laundry detergent filling her lungs. Sam pulled back, stared at Gaia with a look she couldn't figure out if were love or hurt. They didn't speak a word as Sam simply kissed Gaia's forehead before turning to leave.

No doubt about it Gaia thought as she watched Sam walk away, this man still is the love of my life.

Chapter 6

Gaia had been pretending to be sleeping for about an hour so far. She wanted to see the person who had planted the walkie talkie under the tree in action, just in case they came back. Sure enough, after a long time of keeping her eyes shut and lying in the same postition, Gaia heard the door click. The plus side of having a door that was easy to unlock.

Leveling her breath just enough to produce soft snores, she heard voices, two of them. They weren't loud enough to make out. Gaia could tell one was female and the other male.

"Quick, we need to find it. We can destroy the person who left it here later." one voice said, the female, with what sounded like a russian accent.

Gaia's ears perked up, listening intently.

"How could you be so careless? I don't know how I'm going to deal with you. If she has used it, she might know to much. Who knows what my daughter could've told her!" the other, older voice said.

Gaia gasped. Yuri! How had he gotten out of jail? He was with Natasha, of course. Damn it! Gaia snook out of her bed quietly, avoiding the floor creaks.

"Did you hear that?" Natasha asked as Gaia froze.

"Don't worry, you sent her that note from that Sam boy to make sure she wouldn't be home, right?" Yuri asked.

"Uh...yes." Natasha said, sounding uncertain.

"Good. I found it, we can leave." Yuri said.

No!, Gaia thought, They can't take it, if that's really my mother I need to talk to her!

Yuri and Natasha were already out the door. Gaia slipped her bare feet into her shoes and grabbed a sweater quick as lighting. She ran as fast at she could, watching Yuri and Natasha get into the car she felt her heart racing. Sweat was clinging to her hairline. She chased after the car, seeming to dissolve the further it got.

Nooo! I won't give up! Gaia thought, I won't loose Katia again!

Chapter 7

"She was home! She knows we took it, GOD DAMMIT!" Yuri shouted, "I thought you gave her the note!"

"I did!" Natasha said sternly, "I attached with that gift I made the boy give her."

"She must not have opened it!" Yuri screamed.

"That's not my fault," Natasha scowled.

"Don't you dare use that tone with me. It is in everyway your fault. I'm going to have to punish you for this!" Yuri said angrily.

The review mirror showed a furious Gaia chasing closely behind, sweat drenching through her jacket, crease lines of concentration on her face. Natasha hated her beauty in everyway possible.

"We're not going to loose her," Natasha said at once.

"Thank you, Natasha. If you haven't done enough already, you just had to state the obvious."

"I'm just saying, maybe we should drive in another direction so she doesn't follow us to where we really need to go."

"No," Yuri said, taking his eyes off the road, "Why do you think I'm not speeding? It's because I want her to follow us."

hope413 - December 29, 2003 08:51 PM (GMT)

Chapter 8

"Would you mind bringing in the ski equipment?" Jakes father called from inside.

"No problem, Dad," Jake replied.

Jake had just gotten back from the trip to the mountains he took with his father. They had arrived late at night from the long drive. When he brought all the lugage inside, he checked the mail.

What's this? Jake thought, confused.

In all the junk there was one letter stood out. It was from "unknown" apparantly and had URGENT written on it in big block letters.

Curiously, Jake tore open the envelope. He stood in shock as he saw the contents. Pictures...not just any pictures, though. Jake felt his anger bubble to the surface, his insides churning viciously. It felt as if a screw driver had been forced through his heart.

Pictures of Gaia.

And Sam.

In the envelope was a piece of scrap paper. The words, "Someone's been being greedy while you were gone." were scribbled in pencil, barely legible.

Jake had to find Gaia. He didn't care how late it was, they needed to talk.

Chapter 9

Gaia felt her legs aching as she furiously ran across the nearly deserted road. It figured, since it was quite late, even for New York. Her thighs were throbbing, and her mouth was dry. Each gulp of saliva scratched her throat unbearably, each whiff of air she took made her feel as if her lungs were burning and yet Gaia wouldn't stop chasing Yuri. It seemed that she was, in fact, running even faster than normally. What was pumping Gaia most was anger. Anger that for once she let herself think that she was safe, and that she could live a normal life. Gaia hated herself for letting her believe in her false security. She would NEVER be safe. The car made many swifts and turns but it never went faster, never speeded up. This made Gaia wonder.

Knowing my life, they are probally leading me to God knows where to do God knows what!

Gaia didn't care. It was Katia, her mother. Gaia's mother. Gaia had to hold back tears at the thought of actually speaking with her mother, that she actually had spoken with her before. Gaia felt her heart throbbing. She had never been a believer of the super natural but it seemed even more bizzare to Gaia that Katia was...alive.

Nearly tripping over her own feet, Gaia picked up the pace. Quickly drying her sweaty palms against her dirty cargo pants with army print. Gaia's blond mane of hair was whipping furiously behind her head. Then Gaia saw something out of the corner of her eye that almost made her skid to a stop. Jake had spotted her and started calling her name. His voice was hoarse, like he was hurt, but his facial expression made him seem angry.

I'm sorry, Jake. Gaia thought to herself, I'll help you later, I swear. But now I have to do something extremely important.

When Jake saw that Gaia wouldn't stop, his expression drew even more angry, but when he spotted the car, his face softened, just for a second. Then he lept up and started chasing after Gaia.

As Jake chased Gaia, and Gaia chased Yuri and Natasha who had her not-so-dead mother trapped in a walkie talkie...

Gaia's illusion of even a relatively normal life shattered instantly.

KickBoxerGirl - December 31, 2003 04:23 PM (GMT)
