New Story:
She stood silently, a gentle night breeze ruffling her thin, cotton pyjamas. A few strands of straight, dark hair fluttered in front of her eyes and she brushed them back. The evening was warm in the beginnings of summer, but outside her house and away from its shelter she was exposed to the colder wind. Sam shivered. She didn’t know why she was there.
Well, actually, she did… It was the attraction of the deep black beyond their country house, the vast expanse of darkness that was broken by nothing but the few glowing pinpricks of stars. She glanced up at the sky, looking around for something, but what it was she could not tell.
Sam shifted her bare feet, damp from the grass dew. What little light came from the windows of the house behind her illuminated not much more than her skin and pale pyjamas. She felt like a blob of light in a sea of void. Then her brown eyes caught another trace of contrast… The shining stars. And as she watched them, far above, she noticed a few of them were blotted out.
Staring at this feature, she incredulously noticed that a few stars were reappearing, only to be replaced by the disappearance of a few more. When she looked hard at the dark patch, she realised that it was not, in fact, an area of blackness, but rather one of a deep navy, so far from blue that without the black sky to compare it with she doubted she would be able to tell the two shades apart.
The shape spun into a wide spiral, the centre about… Well, about where she was, Sam supposed. More and more stars became hidden with each loop and the shape larger. It was approaching.
