I have a Melos and have a prop shaft problem. One of the bearing sets on one of the universaal joints is shot. I have removed the prop shaft for inspection to find the universal is factory constructed and not easily servisable. Firstly can i get replacement bearinggs for it presuming the universal is in good enough order when i dissassemble it? And secondly can i source a replacement prop shaft whole and will it need to be shortened or is there one already of the correct length? I am guessing a MK II Escourt propshaft is what was used. Hope someone can help me.

Hi
I had a bearing replaced in a propshaft about a year ago, it cost about £35 (just one end). It also depends on whether your shaft has been reconditioned before, as there is a limited number of times the joints can safely be restaked. Depending on where you are I would think you would find somebody reasonably close who would do it. Several commercial vehicles still use propshafts so try asking repairers who specialise in these where they send their shafts.

There are two types of propshaft. one with staked joints which can be renewed only a couple of times and only by professionals. The other has circlipped joints which can be renwed at home with a modest tool kit. Look in your yellow pages there are companies who do proshafts all over the country new circlipped joints run aout about £35 - £40 fitted maybe less if you fit your self ( get new ones with grase nipples fitted you can then grease then up at every service) or a new prop should be around £100 with circlipped joints and grease nipples so will last a long time if looked after. Bear in mind a car with a worn or out of balance prop will wear the diff and gearbox causing problems. Best is to have it done professionally and ask then ton rebalance it as well its worth it in the long run. if you have circlipped joints for quick bodge you can go down the scrappy and find an early ford (escort / capri etc) with a circlipped prop with good joints and swop them over. But bear in mind you are only patching the car up and not fixing it prop-erly. ( no pun intended!! )

sounds like good advice from all. thank you very much. i dont want an out of balence prop shaft to break my gear box or diff. and my universal juoits are nit circlipped so cant take that route.
