Title: 2.8 V6 Conversion Into S3

Mr G - January 28, 2003 11:43 AM (GMT)
Well, Lets get the party started then :D

My S3 has had a 1600 crossflow sat in it, and before that a pinto lump by the previous owner. I was wondering if there are any chassis modifications required when fitting the V6 engine. I wondered what engine mounts could be used / adapted as well.

I'm mentioning the engine mounts as my S3 seems to have brackets coming off the chassis i presume for the pinto installation, then more brackets welded onto the brackets (which i suppose are for the xflow conversion!). I did'nt know if it would be a case of start afresh and cutting off all the bracket malarky to offer up some v6 alloy mounts and work from there.

Your views appreciated.

Cheers

Hi G,

Makes me sound like Will Smith for Fresh Prince.....

Don't do it - Ok that 3litre will sounds all mellow and fruity? or is it a 4 cam Cosworth V6?... But stick with a mild tune X-flow simple light and free reving.

As for advice if you really have to do it - Fit new mounts.

If Milo joins the group he may be able to help as he removed a 3 litre lump to put a crossflow in (sensible chap) his Pheaton S3 I beleive.

Cheers

Yo G...

My S2 has a 2.8 V6 in it.

Its straight out of a Capri or such like I believe.

She's real throaty, got a lovely tune and spins in all 4.

The extreme bottom end isn't exactly lightning, but after about 2500, it goes. Flames come out of both sides (She's a bit rich because we snapped the injector nipples off!).

As for the mountings.... Not that disimiliar! It's a lot heavier, fits OK crosswards but on the S2, the water pump pulley is about 20mm from the radiator mesh (Radiator is on inside of front chassis frame). But, in all truth you will probably have a lot more room in your S3.

All I would say is give it a go! Nothing to lose except a few finger crunching hours and sleepless nights... zzz....zzz...'that box on top of the engine will fit tomorrow without me ripping holes all over the bonnet'....zzz...zzz....

If your serious about it... send me a reply or email and I will get you some pics of what may be useful.

point of order, Milo didnt remove the V6 to put in a crossflow , He took it out because it was totally shot with half the centre main bearing and bolt in the sump, I know this because he sold me it (it runs ok ? ) if you ever get chance to go in a Dutt that has a V6 in you will never want a crossflow again believe me
Steve
PS I agree with u fit new mounts

Well... looks like the V6 is going to be plonked in - ANY technical help would be appreciated.

(I knew I should of joined the DOC ;) )

I know nothing of V6 transplants into Pheatons - except to say that as its been done before it cant be that hard.

I recon the best and easiest way would be to remove the body and get that out of way first - then with the chassis nice and clear drop the box and engine into the hole where the X-flow sat - keep it hung over the chassis and measure up for the relevant brackets and mountings.

The two things that need to always be kept in the back of the mind is the location of the master cylinder and the route of the steerng column.

What more is there? :P

What are you doing with the x-flow and the trans x 5 speed?

Any assist needed on the phone just give me a call - e-mail off line for the number - if not far from Shropshire happy to lend a hand

Cheers

Andrew
