Title: Tran-x 2.0L 5 Speed

Mr G - March 5, 2003 02:01 PM (GMT)
This is an on-going gearbox saga. I originally purchased tran-x 5 speed type 9 2 litre gearbox to fit to my V6. I did not realise at the time the type 9 V6 boxes have a longer input shaft. I mated the box up using a 2.3 granny v6 bellhousing and everything seemed fine for a bit. However after removing the box the input shaft sleeve was very milled away at the end and the clutch slipping and very poor. Roughly it seemed that the box was sitting to far forward and the clutch was attacking the sleeve and doing in the clutch 'fingers'.

I posted on another forum for help and was told that other people have used 2.0l type 9 boxes on V6's but had to make up an extension to sleeve onto the end of the input shaft and use a capri bell housing.

After recently going to the tran-x website I noticed that thier type 9 kit is mentioned as though its a one for all kit that fits all type 9 boxes. I have emailed them asking if this is the case because the V6 boxes do need the longer input shaft. I was wondering how the straight cut cog is attached to the input shaft, as if it was removable i would be able to put it onto my V6 input shaft and not have to buy a whole new longer V6 input shaft for the box i want to now use. The rest of the contents of the old type 9 straight cut should swap straight over into the V6 casing ok. Its just the damn input shaft. If anyones got access to lathe/milling equipment then i may need an adapter made up if all else fails.

The kit i have is HERE and you can see that the input shaft does come in the kit so im sure that the cog is non-removable.

Any help/ideas would really be appreciated.

Cheers

what made you use the 2.0 gearbox ? I have mated a 3000 V6 to a 2.8i gearbox which has as you point out has a longer first motion shaft approx 12mm longer and I had to extend the thrust race sleeve so the bearing didnt fall off the end , if you want a longer more detailed explanation drop me a mail , I dont think the gear on the first motion shaft is removable seem to remember trying to switch shafts myself for the same reasons as you

Hi Steve,

I picked up the 2.0L box because i could'nt find a 2.8 V6 straight cut advertised. I did'nt realise the input shaft length difference at the time.

Could you PM me more info, that would be great.

Cheers
