can anyone tell me why there is an alternative way of fitting the pedal box when using a Pinto?

The build manual gives an arrangement for the Kent and Essex of Column between Clutch and brake pedal, and for the Pinto the Column goes between the Brake and accelerator.

On my 2000/1800 Pinto this makes the master cylinder so close to the manifold only a small single circuit type master cylinder can be fitted - It looks like if I use the X-flow method the Cylinder is moved over misses the exhaust by a country mile and will enable a dual cylinder to be fitted.

Am I missing something?

Some sort of good news on the rebuild front.

the reason the MC was so close to the manifold was that the engine mountings were the wrong way round - once corrected the engine moved to the right (front viewed) - bellhousing clearance improved and it gave a half decent distance from the MC - would be even better if installed in the X-flow position - I cant figuer the two different positions - I gues if with the Pinto you do not have to modify the pedal box it makes the build easier.

I always wondered why everyone went on about sump clearance problems as my Pinto with a standard sump was miles clear opf the road - Well when I corrected the engine mountsand took out the spacers from the left had side - being used to move the engine over because the mounts were fitted wrong - you would have thought they might have noticed or read the manual!! - the eningine droped a good 40mm close to the floor - improved fit alround except for the sump clearance :huh:

Finally got some struts to cut down to fit the Capri 2.8i vented discs - The car was fitted with mk1 van discs for 12 inch wheels - well this gives some added problems - the struts are from a MK2 escort - Originally fitted were mk1 escort which has a different rack and rod ends - also the wheels studs are different.

I also have the job of modifying the chassis rails to accept coilovers of a standard nature ratherthan the strange misaligned round things that take a imp or spitfire assembly.

So now looking for a MK2 rack - guess a 2nd hand rally quick rack will fill the bill.

Also bit of info - on the sierra pinto the manifold is much narrower and has a twinbranch outlet - this gives much more clearance for MC - loads in fact - It also looks like it can be modified for side exit with a bit of carefull cutting and shutting.

Hmmm, my S3 has a 2ltr Pinto and I'm pretty sure that the steribg coloum passes the outside of the clutch pedal, i.e between the clutch pedal and trans tunnel! I'll check when I get home, and probably look pretty Stoopid :lol:

:P No, not stupid at all, the steering coloum does indeed pass the clutch pedal on the trans tunnel side.

Hi Simon,

Just got back from Gloucester where I assisted in the demise of an S4 body - hangs head in shame :unsure: - with Pete - I needed some bits of glass for repair panels and he needed the space back.

Guess what - His S3 with x-flow - has the pedal box to the right of column as well - and about 2-3 inches lower than both my S3 and S4. Took some snaps with the digi and will be geting the chopped strand mat out to make a few adjustments very soon.

Pete - the offer of the welding stands - at the same time as the bracket I could modify the exhaust for side exit if you like. The calliper is put aside - It looks very similar to the calliper on the back of my 740 Volvo - the pads or the same the only difference seems to be the entry of the brake pipe - the one I have has a centre piston entry and the volvo is more typically at one end.

My S4 has got to be the most difficult *&^&$ of a thing nothing, and I mean nothing is straight forward - what do I find with relocating my pedal box in line with that of Pete and Simon - the steering column is two inches further over to the right than the S3 so that no way will the pedal box go between it and and the ****pit side- if thats been edited then its the malechickenpit side. :lol:

So what did the job entail.

Chopping the side out of the pedal box to give more clearance
Raising the steering rack 30mm on the bulkhead - and at the dash mounting to keep the angle right to miss the engine mounting.
Cutting a lump of the mounting rubber to give rack clearance.
Straightening the accellerator pedal and rewelding the pedal pad at the correct angle.
Straightening the brake pedal and rewelding the pad at a better angle
Bending the clutch pedal a bit more to give foot sized clearance between it and the accellerator pedal and cutting and rewelding the pedal pad at a better angle.

This all allows the pedal box to be mounted in almost the centre of the foot box and has the pedals at the correct height for my size 9's and with the pads at an angle that allows comfortable operation - it also make the Master cylinder a country mile from the exhaust and make its possible to fit any type of master cylinder - even bias type twin cylinder set ups.

However its a lot of work - but if it means the car is comfortable to drive its gotta be worth it. - now to glass up all the holes that have been left :(

Next job sorting out that suspension - Oh an the angles are in the wrong plane for anti dive so what on earth it does I do not know. Still reading the books and doing the drawings. :blink:
