I own a 1989 Phaeton S3 which I am currently re-building, I have just bought the last few parts to see it through its first MOT for a while. When I came to fit the handbrake cable I had bought for a MK1 Escort 1100 it was too long. Does anyone know why this is or how I can modify it to fit before the 27th?!

hiya, jeah had the same problem on my s3, witha mk2 cable, it is too long, dutton supplied a block with two holes drilling in at right angles to each other, one was threaded and had a bolt that would pinch the cable when it went through. tried making one and it broke every time i pulled the hand brake up, best way was to cut to required lenth( for me was about 2 meters or some silly length) with a angle griner so the wire does not un wrap itself, then use a dry nipplke and soldier, souns silly but i sed a 6 mm socket cable throught the small end till it protuded about 5mm and filled with flux then soldier so it would not slip out, works very well, can do hand brake turns. make any sence? if not i could try and send a few photos your way, once you see it it makes perfect sence.

Thanks to both replies. especially Russ, I did as he said and soldered on a long nut. The thread inside the nut gives the solder a good place to grip, now the handbrake works perfectly. Cheers Steve.
