Title: Artemis vs Chase Raven

"Drawing in Photoshop, Drawing in Photoshop," Could be heard from outside Kaylei's closed door and down the hall. "Coloring, coloring!"
Kaylei usually had a pretty voice when singing, and truth of the matter was she didn't care what she sounded like. It was an old version, true--but Photoshop none-the-less. The program she thought she'd never have.
She wasn't really drawing anything-- there was a lot of scribbles, and a rather good drawing of her character in The World, the extreme MMORPG game.
Speaking of The World... an alarmclock-like ringing and a popup message reminded her of an appointment she'd made earlier.

Never let myself make my own popup reminders, She noted. Repeating things was her hobby, and she'd have to use a pre-made one to stop herself from smashing her computer monitor every time she looked at one she'd made.
Kaylei picked up the VR Goggles and slipped them over her head carefully. Switing the dial on the right side from 'Solid' to 'Semi-Transparent' so she could see what she was doing with the mouse. Now, able to see, she double-clicked THE WORLD's square icon on her desktop. She quickly typed in her username and password, then switched the dial back to 'Solid' and picked up the controller.

... ... Welcome to The World
Kaylei felt hyped up as she tranferred herself into the mood of Chase Raven. The mood wasn't different, but Kaylei always got energetic when the virtual city of Mac Anu was loading into place. First appeared the sidewalks. Then, the river dug itself a place to run, and a bridge constructed itself over it. Next, the shops and buildings, and finally thousands of players appeared, walking around the pixelized town.
She turned around. Convenient. As always, she was right infront of the Chaos Gate. "Chase Raven and Artemis duel!" She shouted, not knowing what keywords to use.
What she got was a large, frozen field. There were no plants except a few sraggly, scattered, bare trees that looked half-dead. The ground was covered with thick frost, but no snow. The sky was cloudy and grey, but you could see where the sun showed through by a large bright spot. Artemis wasn't here yet, and there wasn't anywhere to hide but the dead graveyard trees. Besides, Artemis and Chase were good friends, and Artemis wouldn't attack as soon as she got here, right?
Chase walked to one of the trees, each step accompanied by a crunch but stopped when she looked down. A crack split the field, as if an earthquake had hit.
"I suppose... This is my side, and the other is Art's?" She smiled. "It's like a kid's game of tag. I can step over the crack alright, but I wonder if it serves other purposes than just splitting the field?"
Not feeling like crossing the split earth, she turned and leaned against a tree with her sword by her side, listening carefully for the noise that would accompany Artemis' log-in. The field was bare and empty, but when the battle started, Chase expected it would heat up a lot.

((And heat up it will ^^))
Kazumi leaned against the wall of her room and tapped the touchpad of her sister's I-pod. "'Tis mine till Christmas, yes it is..." She sang hazily, gazing half-asleep at the backlight of the miniature screen. Technology these days: completely inadequate for anything other than entertainment, but yet it was awe-inspiring. The backlight died and shut itself off; as it would do every time she let it alone for more than 15 seconds. She smiled vaguely and flicked the circular track of sensors again. The screen lit up again, revealing a diminutive play list. Kazumi popped the earpieces into her ears and tapped the Play button frivolously with the tip of her fingernail and turned to face the glowing computer monitor. “Let’s see what else technology has to offer us, hrmh?” She muttered to herself and transferred her slight weight from the creaky window-side bench to the equally squeaky rolling chair. She spun herself in a complete circle, then let the chair drift to a gentle stop.
Her eyes immediately shifted to the World icon. “Skull bashing once more?” She asked herself, then smacked herself lightly with her palm for being stupid. Sane little girls don’t talk to themselves… The Japanese girl slid the mouse over the pad and double-clicked it, every ounce of her existence yearning for the game to open hastily. Obsession was a strange thing- the closer she was to the World, the more she longed to play it. It was like the forces of attraction lesson she had learned in Science. The larger the object, the closer it is, the stronger the pull. Kazumi smiled slightly as her avatar was loaded into Mac Anu. The World was indeed huge. “So true…”
Artemis was fully loaded into the World and appeared in the Gate-In area of Mac Anu through a flourish of shimmering gold rings. The wavemistress brushed a few strands of dark ebony hair and took a pondering step in the general direction of the Chaos Gate. What was to do today? Certainly more skull-bashing! “But what first…?” She looked up into the blue sky of the root town, careful not to look straight into the blindingly bright sun. “Ah, I remember…” The falconic player held the taut strings that bound her composure together a few seconds longer. “Chase!” With that, she released the mental bindings and broke into a run, the word fun echoing in the little girl’s head.
Pattering across the bridge, she nearly ran into quite a number of players, shouting incoherent Hey!’s and Moovitt!’s to whomever she smacked into. Artemis skid to a stop in front of the spinning gate and nearly ran into in before entering the keywords for the dueling field and vanishing. The girl stared into the darkness of the pitch black loading screen and began to sing to herself in an inaudible whisper. "Sora wa aogi hoshi no michite tobitatsu no-" She had only managed to progress through most of the first line before the World icon flashed a last time and vanished, taking the sheet of blackness with it.
The field was covered with a thick frost; that was what Artemis found out first. She had been loaded into the area while looking vacantly at her feet. Interesting shoes... That was strange, since she'd been wearing them in the World since she'd became a player, but it seemed to her like she had just discovered them now. The spellcaster stared blindly at her feet for a while longer, then looked up and peered around at the field speculatively. It was cloudy and grim, with a sort of depressed look to it. Shadowy gray clouds blanketed the sky; a thick wall of vapor. The sun's countenance was marked by a single area of illuminated cloud, glowing dully on the grimness of the tundra below. Artemis looked to her side and saw Chase. The blademaster was leaning on a very dead-looking tree nearby, and the falcon player was about to walk over to her when she found the crack.
Looking down into the narrow crevasse, She let out a whistle and her eyebrows shot up. Interesting crack... Artemis suddenly felt as if the side she was on belonged to her and if Chase passed over, the wavemistress could tag her and she'd be "out". Very strange. She glanced up from the parted ground and smiled at Chase.
"A Haiku," She said, as ideas formed in her head. She was no poet, but she had a strange knack for creating haikus for every rare or unique moment. She didn't usually share them, though.
"A frosty field,
meeting a friend, companion,
...in practice battle"
Artemis finished and let out an embarrassed, shaky laugh. "I'm sorry, that was weird."
((>.> Getting kicked off, finish tomorrow.))
EDIT: Fixing tags... XD stupid things
EDIT: Finished post.

Chase smiled and laughed. "I've never been very good at haikus, but I can write couplets," and with that, she tried to come up with one.
"In a place with so full of cold, let's warm it up with a fight warm, yellow and shiny like gold."
She laughed again, shaking her head. "That was so bad. I'll have a better one by the end of the duel, I promise."
She stood, and walked to the edge of the crack, to where Artemis was standing. It was small enough that you could leap over, not you couldn't simply step, and it would have to be quite a leap. Tough for Artemis and Chase, because they were short, but a tad easier for Chase because she was a little taller. Or maybe not, because Art had those wings and could hover...
"Let's get started. But first, a handshake. I need my good karma," She said, with a smile, then with a chucke added, "Because I won't win otherwise. May the best... thing... player, that's it... May the best player win." She extended her hand to her friend. It was out as far as she could reach, and below her she could see the black crack. Looking away from the seemingly endless abyss, she brought her eyes back to her opponent. If Artemis reached her arm out all they way, they would meet in the middle.

Artemis smiled at Chase’s couplet. That wasn’t so bad… The wavemistress stepped forward to the edge and reached charily across it, leaning a little to help her hand meet her friend’s. She wasn’t one to believe in Karma, but quite a few people did, so she had learned not to make light of those people. She smiled flippantly and shook the blademaster’s hand, then stepped back and flicked hair from her face. She shook her head a bit to make all the dark ebony strands fall back and made a slight face. “Stupid hair always gets in my way…” The girl raked her fingers through her hair irately and brushed it back more, only to have it make its way into the falcon’s vision. Dammit… She was careful not to curse aloud nowadays, but every now and then, a naughty word escaped. Old habits die hard.
“Let’s start!” She said finally, giving up on her unruly head growth. Even after her sister chopped half her hair off, it still went everywhere and was maybe even more unmanageable than it had been before. Artemis sighed, her mood soured slightly. She didn’t want to hurt Chase to much, being a higher level, but she turned to someone dependable who always worked well with situations like this. Falc… Falc! Falcon was fast- very fast, and agile. Chase could get some handy target practice from trying to hit a character modeled after the fastest animal in existence. What? She jerked a bit. Falc was still bitter towards her.
I know I yelled at you to leave last time, but you need to do this for me. What’s in it for me? FALC! Please? Ten minutes of kill time in the next dungeon. There was a cerebral hush from Falcon for a while. The offer must have been very enticing, since the one thing the animal craved was movement. All it had to do was supply Artemis with a short while in battle without attacks. This is the second time Chase’s faced a Figgy far stronger than her. If she keeps this up, she’ll get real good soon. Artemis thought to herself, but Falc probably ‘heard’ it too.
Fine, I’ll do it. But remember- TEN minutes. Artemis smiled slightly, even though in her secret mind, she knew that Falc would get her in quite a bit of trouble within that ten minute time limit. Ah, well, she’d worry about that later. The spellcaster raised her staff in her hand, feeling Falc take over stealthily, and called out to Chase, “Let’s play tag- try to hit me!” The falcon spread her black, pointed wings and gave Chase a quick forewarning. “Be careful, if I do something out of the ordinary, back off, okay?” After all, there was no telling what Falc would be willing to do to dear friend Chase- it didn’t like any of Artemis’s friends. If Chase pissed the animal off, it could end up trying to slay her.
