Title: Divvy-Con
Description: Ahh, what the heck, I'll make the topic
Savior X - August 4, 2008 01:31 PM (GMT)
Ok, so some things were floating around before and this has been "attempted" a few times in the past, but to my knowledge, never went out completely as planned. >__>
So, it would be a great thing if we had a Divvy-Con for all of us to meet and just hang out. Of course we have the con thread for us to try and run into each other at anime cons, but usually that doesn't get everyone or nearly anyone sometimes. o.o
So, I figured if we actually do WANT to try to get this to work, let's see about where exactly we want to have this. I've broken down the poll into three main areas, as well as an "other" vote. What I want to know is what area of what I have listed would be the closest and easist to get to for you. Now, granted, I've only really put down three areas. I chose these three because these are three highest population areas of Divvy members.
What I want to get from this poll is a more definite answer as to which of the three areas has the highest population of us. So, vote on which of those three areas would be the best for you and in your post, include how far you would be willing to travel to go to a Divvy-Con. If you REALLY don't fit in to any one of those categories (let's say you live in Kansas or Texas or North Dakota or not even in the US), then vote Other and give us your location and how far you might be willing to go.
As for as timeframe, I'm gonna say we can either look at sometime around Spring Break or Summer, whichever seems to work better. So anyways, post up in here and we can start planning. ^__^
EDIT: Please make sure that if you vote, you post as well. If we know where everyone is located, but not how far they are willing to travel, that really doesn't help that much.
EDIT 2: Arcion brings up a good point in his post about having a Divvy-con weekend, where we all meet in our seperate hubs for a Divvy-con. That is also a good possibility, but we would need someone from each hub to put each gathering together.
EDIT 3: Ok, so it's come down to the impression that we are going to try and hold seperate Divvy-cons, unless some amazing opportunity for one big one presents itself. So, everyone post up in here about if you'd like to plan this around a con/big event or have us chose a date ourselves. Also, people who from one of the four regions, if you guys could post up some information about any big cons or events happening in your area, I'll compile the list at the top.
EDIT 4: Ok here is the current list of people that are most likely attending:
EDIT 5: (Invasion of personal space by Lyra) Updating this to reflect the Official Divvy-con and the other options for those who can't make it.
Name = Thinking about attending
**Name** = Definitely / Tentatively attending
Name = Needs lodging

Arcion - August 4, 2008 02:18 PM (GMT)
I live in So. Cal, but for gathering with friends I'd be willing to travel out to even Maine if we decided to hold it there, or even further including going outside the states. A chance to meet friends is plenty worth any hassle for me :D
That said.. I'm really sad to say it, but I don't know if this would be possible. To even have a family gathering (of local people only on my mom's side) is hard even if we planned it over a month in advance. I think it would really be hard to find any time and place for us to meet that fits into most people's schedules unfortunately, given our relative age and how busy this world wants to push us. At best we'd get a handful of people generally.
Maybe instead of having a single Divvy-Con, though it would be a bit of a defeat of the purpose, having a 'con' weekend in each place in the poll, so at least we could meet with some of the other people in our areas.
Savior X - August 4, 2008 02:30 PM (GMT)
That's actually also a good idea. We could each meet in one of the three hotspots and set up a web conference with the other two. =P
But, yea I agree with you Arcion, sadly since we're all kids, its tough for us to get together. I mean heck, Rayo lives right near me apparently, but he's impossible to track down. I know, I've tried. >__>
Well, for me I'd be willing to travel anywhere in the US I guess, more so somewhere in NC or California if I have to leave the Northeast. I'd be able to pull the "I just wanna go on a summer vacation to this tourist spot" card a lot more likely in those areas than in, let's say, Kansas. XDDD
nighthand - August 4, 2008 03:54 PM (GMT)
I live in Michigan, which is one thing. The location thread is a bit out of date, since I don't live near Flint any more, I live in Kalamazoo. Even got a house with some friends and everything!
Heck, I'd try to host it if not for the sheer number of people that could potentially show up. Our house is pretty sweet, but more than like, ten people would crowd it out.
As for travel, I'm not really able. School has a tight schedule AND has been draining all my cash for the last six years. That and I have no car. >__>
Then again, even though I'm an admin, I don't really need to be present. I wouldn't have you all plan around me =P Especially considering how boring I am, and how boring Kalamazoo is.
Stane - August 4, 2008 03:58 PM (GMT)
Well, animazement lasts for a whole weekend counting friday. I think all of the NC gang and most of the Colorado crew (including kiwi) were going to go to the last one, but stuff happened on both ends ><.
I'll be in Raleigh, NC for college with no car, so my vote goes for anywhere someone is willing to drive me XD. Including the airport :P. However, if we decide to go somewhere extremely far, I'd rather it be because it's somewhere great that I'd want to see regardless, like the everglades or grand canyon or something. A plane ticket is an expensive thing to spend a few hours in a living room for, ya know? :/
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see all you guys :3. Thanks for making this thread by the way, sav. ^^

Hey, np dude. I want this to happen as much as anyone, if not more. ^__^ I remember when me and Cypher started talking about this a couple of years ago. *le sigh* I miss Cyph. =(
Anyways, well I know for Michigan, there are a few people that live out that way nighthand, so I kinda of included that in the Northeast area. But I also promised Uruvei a while back that I'd come visit her at some point. Actually, I also promised another old Divvy member from like a few years ago that I'm still in contact with that I would come visit her out in Nevada, so California is close enough to that as well. That means I can visit Kiwi =D (Kiwi, you might remember her, Akane Lockheart? I brought her into the SB a long time ago) So, if I went to visit her, I could also visit the Cali people as well. Looks like I have enough incentive to visit all three Divvy-cons.
We should actually even have the seperate Divvy-cons and one group of people that are going to be badass enough to go visit all three of them. Can anyone say REALLY long ass plane trip? =D
Sekai - August 4, 2008 04:52 PM (GMT)
Aww Nights, don't be like that.
We could always bring a bunch of notebooks positively filled with Very Bad Hack Ideas, just for you!
OhdearGoddon'thurtmeIwaskidding.
...sortamaybekinda.
I like the hotspot idea too!
Savior X - August 4, 2008 05:12 PM (GMT)
Alright, so if we do the hotspot idea, then we would need to decide how many we're doing, where they are going to be, and who is going to be in charge of getting everything together. If we do hot spots though, I HIGHLY suggest we all pick someplace that has internets, bring a laptop and a webcam, and we all have a ginormous webcam chat, that way we can at least all SEE each other together, which would still be kinda of cool. =D
Uruvei - August 4, 2008 06:55 PM (GMT)
Well, why not do each location on a separate weekend?
That way, those who COULD go to more than one will be able to do so without being in two places at once. :P
At this point in our lives, as much as we want to do a nation-wide/International DivCon, I think it's too ambitious. In another fourish years, assuming that the majority of our currently active members stick around, we'll have a big group that's outta college and might actually have enough money to really do our own Con. However, regional DivCons... I already know they can work, because all the NC Divvers have already successfully pulled one off. :P
I'd love to see Xan and Stane and Locke again, but I'll add that to get a regional DivCon to work out, it's going to take at least one highly organized and motivated individual planning for each 'hotspot'. The best time of year is probably during major vacations (Spring Break and Summer, possibly Christmas) - however, people are in different places during the school year (like Dien being in Cali, and I'll be in Indiana). So, the dynamic changes a bit based on what time of year it is. Furthermore... if we want this to happen within the next year, we need to start planning NOW. Who's up for it...?
Finally, I'd like to suggest the Midwest as a fourth hotspot. Lyra's in Colorado, right? And I think we have some Texans and Arizonans and such. It also seems like we could use Conventions as our Minicons. We could book ourselves a panel or just pick a meeting place and time. (Panel would be fun. We could maybe attract some people from the cons that way.) Animazement, which is Memorial Day weekend (May 22-24) would be great for the SouthEast DivCon. Lots of people annually plan to go to it, anyway. (And, as incentive, you'll get to see Xantos in Momiji cosplay. Very worth it!)
Zan - August 4, 2008 08:14 PM (GMT)
I'm stuck in Charles City, Iowa, and quite a distance from most people. Should any of you guys ever be near, though, shoot me an IM/PM and we'll see what we can do.
Jpec07 - August 4, 2008 09:49 PM (GMT)
Depends on the time of year. During the school year, I'm in Southern California, about 45 minutes out of LA. During the summer, I'm in Massachusetts (note: the entire state of Massachusetts is 2 hours' drive end to end, so saying I'm from Massachusetts is pretty all-encompassing...). As for travel...as long as it was planned well in advance, I could get pretty much anywhere for a meeting (I mean, Southwest flies most places, and they can provide absurdly cheap rates if you book well enough in advance). Short notice, though, it'd need to be within 10 hours' drive (this means about a third of the country is out of range, sadly including Colorado).
Cineris - August 4, 2008 10:11 PM (GMT)
I live in Cali and the simple truth is I would be willing to travel as far as I could afford.
Watorie - August 4, 2008 10:44 PM (GMT)
I live in michigan but cant realy go furthur than detroit... my life sux...
Magras - August 5, 2008 12:52 AM (GMT)
I'm unable to attend a Div-Con for a few years, but once I'm on my own I'll definitely go to one (you know, assuming plane ticket fees and hotel fees and general living expenses can be covered, and I can take the week/end off >_<).
Raven - August 5, 2008 06:18 AM (GMT)
All I know, I'm looking at a map of the US as I say this... there is little to no chance of me getting down from Toronto to the NC area, and even littler chance of me getting to California (already took that $600 plane trip once this year for AX).
Northern States on the other hand, I thinkl I could manage. Hell, if it was somewhere like Detroit, I could Greyhound it in a few hours. Hell, I could probably drag a few old members along with me, Ichida and Xenosaga specifically.
...and wait...don't Magras and Ezekial live within an hour or two of me... may be wrong about the latter...
Savior X - August 5, 2008 12:42 PM (GMT)
Alright, so it seems like we might be looking at doing seperate Divvy-Cons then. So, we're looking at...four then? Here are the areas I've got so far:
- Northeast US/Canada
- Southeast US
- Central US
- Western US
That pretty much encompasses most of our members, sorry to everyone that doesn't fit in that category. =( Go buy a yacht and meet us somewhere. XD
The other option to look at is, like people have mentioned, plan for as many of us to meet at one con as possible. To my knowledge, the three biggest cons that come to mind are Otakon (Northeast US), Animazent (Southeast US), and a big one out by Cali but can't remember the name (Western US). So there in itself are our divisions. =P
So, I guess what we need to decide now is if we're going to try and plan our meeting around a con or if we're going to try and plan the meeting around us. Personally, as long as a con falls somewhere inbetween Spring Break, Summer Break, or a convient weekend during the school year, I can head down there.
Plus, I'm sure I can speak for everyone when I say that if we said to our parents, "Hey yea I'm going to meet a whole bunch of people from the internet and hang out with them at ____", they might be just a little skeptical at the least. lol But if we say we're going to an anime convention, well I'm sure that would just seem plain normal for us. =D
So, everyone post up in here about if you'd like to plan this around a con/big event or have us chose a date ourselves. Also, people who from one of the four regions, if you guys could post up some information about any big cons or events happening in your area, I'll compile the list at the top.
EDIT: Just for some perspective and because I was really curious, I went on Priceline.com and wanted to see what a plane ticket would be for me from Albany, NY to Raleigh, NC and from Albany, NY to Sacramento, CA and Sacramento CA, to Raleigh, NC. Now, granted, I don't know if you guys live anywhere near the capitals, it was just for perspective. XD Here are the numbers I got for a random flight that I booked for the last week in Feburary 09 (They wouldn't let me do a week in the Summer).
Albany, NY - Raleigh, NC Roundtrip: $250 - $350
Albany, NY - Sacramento, CA Roundtrip: $450 - $550
Sacramento, CA - Raleigh, NC Roundtrip: $400 - $500
So, that's for a roundtrip fare, which book in the next couple of months for something in the summer or spring would be fairly cheap to what it COULD be. I mean, that roundtrip ticket is a little more than a weeks pay for me at my current job. =D Plus, I'm saving all of this money up for something in the future (not sure what though). So this could be a good enough excuse to spend it. =D Better yet, each of you guys plan a Divvy con for each of the hot spots and I'll travel to it and make a documentary. XDDD
Kae - August 5, 2008 01:40 PM (GMT)
I'm in th D.C. area, though I've been promising to go to Animazement for years. So if that's on the block, I may just bite the bullet and head down.
Elsewise, if it's good weather (ie not winter) I can drive a decent ways. Flying's pretty much out of the question for me - just don't make enough to support it
Savior X - August 5, 2008 01:54 PM (GMT)
Well, apon glancing at the Animazement website for the dates for 2009 and at my college's academic calender, I'll be able to come down for the entire weekend if I wanted to. =D Let's see what a plain ticket costs for that...
EDIT: Bad-fricking-ass XD I can get a roundtrip plane ticket from Albany to Durham on Continental Airlines for $356 on that week. =D It's looking more and more like a possibility that I'll be going to Animazement in 2009.
Stane - August 5, 2008 07:52 PM (GMT)
Yay! More animaze people :D. If that's one of the checkpoints, I'll definitely be headed for that one (it's in my city) haha.
gothic_christian - August 6, 2008 02:51 AM (GMT)
I'm in GA, and I think perhaps the ONLY one in GA <_< Closest thing for me would probably be NC where I know Jeri and Xantos are. I would be more than able and willing to come, so long as it doesn't interfere with my court date (still unknown but upcoming, and if you don't know then just don't ask, please)....I need to get started on a costume....*runs off to look up materials and such*
Lyra - August 6, 2008 03:43 AM (GMT)
I'm personally willing to go just about anywhere in the US. I love me my Denver because it's central and because I've lived here for god knows how long, but I'm willing to drive somewhere else for a con and I'm willing to drag anyone I've got nearby with me.
Usually the two cons I go to each year are Animazement in NC in May and Nan Desu Kan here in Sept. As has always been said, anyone who wants to come visit either of those can.
Savior X - August 6, 2008 12:30 PM (GMT)
Ok, so the impression I am getting so far is that Animazement seems to be THE con that the most people are going to. Strange...I would think Otakon would be...maybe it's just too big for it's own good. lol So, maybe that's an option to plan around, get as many people as possible to attend Animazement. We could even do the Divvy panel everyone is suggesting, we'd have enough time to plan it out. =P
Alright, so I guess everyone check your calenders and see about availability for Animazement. As for the other idea, post up any more big cons that are happening in your area. I'll kinda of leave it up to the people from each hub to discuss where would be a good place to meet and if you guys come to a decision, I'll edit it up at the top for everyone to see.
Uruvei - August 6, 2008 11:21 PM (GMT)
For everyone who meets at Animazement, we should all cosplay as our divvy characters on the first day! (I mean, I'll have to soak in coffee for a few hours first, but it'll be fun xD) We could take massive group photos and stuff! :D
Xantos - August 6, 2008 11:51 PM (GMT)
I'm good for Ani, and I've been meaning to make a Xan outfit for ages, I've just never got around to it proper. I'll probably make Ani most years, if others are going.
gothic_christian - August 7, 2008 02:08 AM (GMT)
Ohh looking at the Animazement homepage I defiantly think I can make it for the 2009 con, only I can't seem to find any prices where are they hiding? (and my little sis is totally coming with me!)
Edit: Ohhh they're not up yet.
Stane - August 7, 2008 02:29 AM (GMT)
I guess I'm finally going to have to fork over the money for that hat XD. And by the way...does anyone have a zebra-color wig o_O;
Viva - last year I think admission was 40 bucks? Someone back me up on that.
gothic_christian - August 7, 2008 02:59 AM (GMT)
Really? SWEET! Now the big expense comes from the costume and the hotel room and apparently husband wants to come as well <_<
Savior X - August 7, 2008 03:04 AM (GMT)
Alright, so then if it seems that Animazement is going to be the BIG Divvy-con, I think we should start to think about what we're actually going to do. My college year ends on like the 2nd week of May, so I'll want take a place on Friday so I can go for the whole day's events. So, I'm not sure how many people are planning on going, but we'll need to decide whether or not we're gonna get a hotel or crash as someone's place. *Looks at Stane with a menacing glare* Hehehe....lol
I don't mind getting a hotel with some people to save some costs, but I suggest we book it sometime in the next month or two to make sure we're secure.
EDIT: Well my costume is pretty easy to assemble EXCEPT for the black chest armor and the possibility of purple wings. lol I'll have to see what a costume store has.
Xantos - August 7, 2008 04:07 AM (GMT)
Yeah, it's generally $20-30 for a one day pass, and $40-50 for the three day. *Backs Stane up*
Raven - August 7, 2008 05:21 AM (GMT)
I would try and make it down there for Animazement 2009... but I'm afraid that a rather big name con happens right here in the city I live in that very weekend. I can't really justify the cost of getting down there when a bigger convention is happening right here.
...However, since they do happen on the exact same weekend, the idea of the web conference comes up once again. Plus, the only thing I don't already have for a Raven costume is a black cloak...
Savior X - August 7, 2008 12:42 PM (GMT)
Well I'll obviously be bringing my camera with my if I attend and my big SD card, so I can take plenty of videos and pictures. =D So everyone can feel like they are there.
So, not the other question comes up, I guess is if we're going to do anything special, other than just assemble at Animazement. For example, someone suggested we have a Divvy booth of some sort (not sure if they were joking or not), but maybe if we can't do something as specific as Divvy, we can have a booth on Forum RPs and have it be sponsored by Divvy XD
So, anyways, besides Animazement, is there anything we would plan on doing that weekend, like some other event or w/e?
Stane - August 7, 2008 03:09 PM (GMT)
Wow...that would get SO MUCH activity....
Uruvei - August 8, 2008 12:15 AM (GMT)

Yeah, something divvy-sponsored would probably get a lot of attention for the site! I think it'd be a great way of 'advertising', since we were all worried about that a few weeks ago. Let's to it!
Savior X - August 8, 2008 01:34 AM (GMT)
Ok, well let me go on the website and see what the process is for getting a table and what not.
EDIT: So, I sent an e-mail out to the Panels section of the Animazement staff explaining who we are and essentially what we would like to do. I'm not sure if we would have enough to have a fun panel's worth, but we could possibly be allowed to set up a table or something. I'll let everyone know what their response is.
EDIT 2: I've also created a topic on their forums in the Panels section, specifically bringing up the topic of RP Boards. I figure there is a lot we can cover if we have a full panel activity (maybe an hour or a half an hour), plus if we had other Forum RPs join us, we could make it even better. I opened the topic up to discussion on there to see what some of the people think about it and if any other people, who may be apart of other boards, would wish to join us. You can't ask for a better start than that. =P I'll update everyone on any progress.
Also, I think I may get around to doing two costumes of I can. Besides my Savior X costume (which should be relatively easy), I think I might work on a Kite costume I've been interested in doing for a while now.
The_lone_dragon - August 11, 2008 05:30 PM (GMT)
well id have to check with work but i could pop to Animazement on my way to florida for vacation. but by any chance would any one lend me a hand with a bed or just a floor would be nice?
Stane - August 11, 2008 07:38 PM (GMT)
I suppose I'll get to asking my parents if we can crash at their house around the time you guys have to book flights and such >_>. I think xan's house is going to be full of people also. *shrug* can't make any promises until I ask them.
Savior X - August 11, 2008 07:51 PM (GMT)
lol don't worry about it if they say no. Since I'll be done with school nearly two weeks before this starts, I plan on taking the plan down on the Thursday and coming back on the Monday, that way I can spend all of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the convention. Just because of that, I'd be fine getting a hotel since I would be down there for a while. Of course, I would perfectly willing to pay your parents for letting me crash at your house and do whatever necessary chores that might need to be done. ^__^ I'm a nice guy like that. lol
I still haven't recieved any responce yet from the leaders of Animazement about a panel and my post on the forum has only recieved one responce. Would you believe that a YAOI panel topic is getting more hits and responces than our panel topic?!?!?! *grumble grumble* >__>

I would. I mean, we're competing with a kind of porn here...it killed Beta-max, and it's going to kill us...
Sekai - August 12, 2008 06:22 AM (GMT)
Creative minds wanting a panel for a small fandom competing against a topic for Hawt Bishie Buttsex?
Oh Savior, thou hast not been educated in Fangirl 101; tis a truly terrifying and horrible place to be.
Where is my goddamn Yuri panel?! D< YAOI can go DIAF.
Zan - August 12, 2008 06:24 AM (GMT)
Yeah, Sav. I'm not even an anime fan and I know that something like that is logical. Ours has a small cult following, their's has a following of nigh ever she-nerd in the world and equally nerdy homosexuals. It's like saying, "Wait, boobs.com gets more hits than Divergence?"
XD
