Story:
Jessica's hair rolled down her face as her head changed positions. A deep roaring sound swept past her slightly opened window, snapping her out of her illusion and back to reality. Her eyes opened reluctantly to the lantern shining on her perfectly curved figure. She slowly raised her head to read the digital numbers on her alarm system that failed to go off again. Her eyelids avoided her command to stay open and collapsed after she managed to understand the red blur givin off by the junky alarm system.
Next, her head gave in and landed on top of a hardback cover. She moaned quietly as she absorbed the little pain that was magnified by her lack of sleep. She forced her eyes open again to make sure that she wasnt just dreaming. Another sigh escaped her lips as the time registered in her half asleep mind. It was 6 A.M., and she had missed the bus again.
"There is no way that I am going to wake up my mom again to take me to school." She sat up and a sharp pain rushed towards her head. She flopped back down ignoring the pain that took another stab at her.
Realizing that the pain wasn't nearly as bad while she was laying down, she decided to start writing her fictional novels that let her escape her reality. Rolling over, she started searching for her pen that disappeared while she was sleeping. Her hand slid in between the small space of where the wall and the side of the bed met. Recognizing the cylindrical shape, she grabbed it and slid her fingers through tight space. Opening her notebook, she flipped through the hundreds of illustrated graphics, admiring her work after her fingers left each page. When Jessica finally got to a blank page, she labeled it 592.
Her hand moved across the semi-blank page and filled the space with the most beautiful cursive writing, only herself could understand. She got down to about half the page when she stopped writing and glared off into space, trying to avoid the television dowstairs drowning her thoughts. She sprung up and ignoring the pains that returned to her head and forced her feet upon the floor.
She was making her way toward the staircase when she remembered that her mom kept her medical drugs locked up in the bathroom upstairs. Jessica made a quick turn to the left just before getting to the stairs and headed down the hall towards the bathroom.
Upon ariving in the bathroom, Jessica reached up at the combination that hid her moms darkest secrets. After about 20 tries at the combination, which seemed like it took ages, she finally gave up and ran her numb hands under some hot water. she rinsed off her face and looked in the mirror. The reflection was beautiful. Long light red locks of hair surrounded her face making her face look perfect. The dimples in her cheeks put the finishing touches on her fine round face.
She rounded the staircase feeling a little better and went downstairs towards the television. It was on the game informer channel. She was about to turn the television off when something interesting caught her eye. Some people were talking about the newest hot game of the month, only available through purchase on the official gaming network channel.
After hearing about the game called "The World", Jessica decided she wanted to try it out. She wrote down the number at the bottom of the screen and shut the television off. She practically ran upstairs to her room so she could order "The World". Once she landed on the bed, the heaviness of her eyes came back. She knew she had no other choice but to sleep. "The World" could wait just one more day.
Morning came, along with the annoying chirping sounds of birds, and the slight bright beams of light escaping her half-closed blinds. She rose back up and remembered the infomercial about the new hot game. Hoping that it wasnt all just a dream, she reached for the half sheet paper that lied on her desk just to make sure.
Feeling much better, she picked up the phone and dialed the 11-digit number that she wrote down last night. She ordered one copy of "The World".
A week later, Jessica got a package in the mail from the company. She reached her hand down her pocket and pulled out $50.00. Reluctantly, she handed the money over to the UPS man, hoping she wasnt making a mistake. When it was too late to change her mind, she ran up the stairs and sat on her bed. Ripping the box open, she took out what looked like a controller and what seemed like a set of big headphones.
She pondered on what the equipment was used for. Then, she finally shrugged her shoulders and put them on and turned on the game. It was all too real, as if she had surround sound and 3D goggles on or something. Then a screen popped up and asked for a username and password.
She was informed that other real life people would be playing "The World" and didnt want to make a stupid name, so she thought longer on what she should be called. She thought about many names, but then realized that she didnt care what other people would think of her name, or know of what a "cool" name would be. It was a game afterall. So she decided to use the name of Emma, which was a character in a novel she wrote. She typed in an 11 digit password and clicked on Enter "The World".
"Im glad it wasnt all just a dream that I had," she said aloud to herself as she entered "The World".
