Title: Operating System
Description: am I alone?

Jpec07 - March 10, 2006 02:35 AM (GMT)
Hey all,

It's come to my attention that I may be one of the few, if not the only person bold enough to try using a pre-virus operating system nowadays. I know it was trashed after Pluto's Kiss struck, but I'm currently running Windows XP (with a handful of homemade add-ons to make it actually work on today's internet). Anyway, the question is: am I alone in using a pre-kiss OS?

(P.S. I got my copy of the OS from an old install disc in one of my dad's filing cabinets, in case anyone's curious)

No way, it's Altimit all the way for me! Aren't all of those old OS's really buggy, anyway? I've never had any trouble with Altimit, and I don't want to risk anything happening to my computer. Besides, isn't it kind of dumb to advertise that you're using an old OS like this? <_<

The bugs I've found haven't been that hard to iron out, actually, just two or three lines of coding here and there. The biggest problems that they have is that they have virtually no control over what their processes are doing, because they're not constantly prompting the user for input. This can be a bad thing, as it allows for things like spyware and smaller viruses (which all but disappeared when Altimit took over). And think about it: would it be any different if a big virus broke out that could take down Altimit if I were using that OS?

And trust me when I say that I don't have to worry about security. :ph43r:

I guess there's a point to that. Any viruses now will just target Altimit, and so the other OS's will be safe... o__o
But I trust Altimit. I don't think anyone will be able to make a virus that can wipe out EVERYTHING like that. I hope not. That was a scarey day! T_T

I'm with you on using the pre-kiss OS. Now that ALTMIT has come along everything seems designed to take it out and the "stone-age" OS's are left alone. They aren't even that bad.

Aren't you worried about a systems crash? I used XP a year ago and it fried my computer, though that could have been user error on my part. Or maybe we have different versions? Still though, I gave up on OS from that point on. What did you add on to make it work, I'm curious.

Well, I do know a lot of coding, and while XP was a very noisy operating system, it did have some very good points. Basically, the only things I did to it were to quiet it down in the System Idle Process, and rewrite its security protocols with Altimit as a model. It runs really smooth now - if you want, I can send you the modified pieces to make it run (although you'll also need the emulator to make Altimit games like "The World" run properly, and I can't give you that one for free). It was hard installing MSDOS over the DOS that Altimit puts out, but I can also walk you through it if you'd like.

I would like to give it a try, good be a good learning experience.

I actually have two computers myself. One of 'em is a really old iMac that still runs OS 9.1. It's really old, can you tell? lol Actually, it's the first model of iMac that had a CD burner. o.o *shrug* My second computer runs the newer OS X "Tiger," but I've installed an Altimitt emulator to still run "The World" from it. The thing about the Macintosh OS though, is that it was never really targeted for viruses anyway. Most people in the pre-kiss days used Windows and so 99% of all viruses were written for that operating system. Some of those viruses were crossplatform, but those are even fewer than the ones written for the Macintosh system. *shrug* I have no fear about security issues on either of my systems with their system of choice.

OSes? I use Altimit, mostly, but there's another older system sitting in a corner I use with one of those ancient PS2 Devkits. I'm a bit of a retrogamer, but making them is better than playing them, imo. That one runs on Linux, since it's easier to use when compiling the games to PS2 format. I wonder what'd happen is I compiled "The World" into a PS2 format ... Meh, I bet that's against the User Agreement, anyways.
