Title: Mainplot Recruitment 2005

nighthand - July 12, 2005 02:34 AM (GMT)
Alright folks, it's that time again. Main is holding another recruitment. You see, our membership has dropped somewhat in recent days, and we're looking for a few good players to fill in that gap.

Signups Are Closed! The quest will start in delta tomorrow, I'll PM each of you a link when it's up.

The Details

Signups! Signups will be held from now until either they're full, there's no one left who wants to sign up. In order to sign up, you must:

- Have any quests you're in finished or very nearly so.
- Have any other player over level 10, mainer or subber, vouch for you
- Have one of us (Nall, Nighthand, possible others) look over your most recent quest or two
- If you're in a clan, gain permission from the clan leadership.
- Only sign up if you seriously intend to join Main. If you are accepted and back out right away, you might have blown your chance.

The reason for the first point: we're doing things a little differently from what we've done in the past. This time, we're holding a quest, to see how well you would handle a mainplot situation. This quest WILL be graded , so it's not a total loss if you're not accepted into Main. However, that means you can't be in any other quests at the same time.

If a mainer wishes to vouch for you and that mainer isn't level 10, they still can vouch for you.

The reason for the clan permissions is because of certain previous arguments. Of course, this means that if you're really set on main and your clan leader doesn't want you in... you might have to make a choice.

In mainplot we DO allow players to come back to subs for important clan quests, and occasional others, but when it becomes too much of a distraction to the main quest, causing it to suffer, it becomes unacceptable. Keep this in mind.

Notes about the quest, and other such details:

There is no level minimum for this quest. If, in the event of a level 1 with no quest, a link to your registration will suffice. In the event of more people signing up than the slots available in the quest, we'll trim out people before the quest. We intend for 10-12 players to participate in the trial quest, from which we'll select the ones best suited for main upon completion.

Questions, ask away.

How to sign up:

Signups are easy. Simply post here with links to your most recent quest (or two), or your registration if you don't have any quests. You'll be added to the list. Names will be added to the list until we begin the quest. If there are several more than 10-12 players on the list, we'll do a little trimming before we start, and the final list will be posted here. As for how many are selected for Main after the quest is over, the number isn't set. However many player we feel would fit well with Main, we'll accept.

What We'll be looking for:

In the trial quest, we'll be looking for a number of factors. Posting speed, Post quality, and teamwork will factor in.
There's no cheat sheet for it, however. It's simply how well you do in a psuedo-mainplot environment. So do your best, and good luck. (More on the quest to come when the quest is set to begin.)

nighthand - July 12, 2005 04:12 PM (GMT)
Hokay, This turned out to be a bad timing issue... My laptop just blew itself all to hell, so, my access isn't as constant as I'd like. I still have my desktop, so not ALL is lost (only most of the essential data I needed for some things) I'll still be on enough to handle this, and hopefully I'll have a more permanent setup by the time the quest rolls around, but we'll see.

Ashura - July 13, 2005 03:31 PM (GMT)
I sent you my reason on PM, but I'm stating it again. I'm dropping out of the quest.

nighthand - July 13, 2005 09:58 PM (GMT)
The timing gets worse and worse; my desktop died as well. I'll try to be online once or twice a day on a different computer if I can, and I'm taking both of mine to a shop asap... In the mean time, please carry on like normal, I'll try to keep this running as smoothly as possible (and Nall will too I'm sure if he gets back before I do)

Sorry to clutter up this thread, but it should be said when I'm the one running the thing.

Yuki Sato - July 14, 2005 05:12 PM (GMT)
Recent Quest: Unforseen Incident...
Voucher: Shugotenshi
Permission from Clan: Yes, from Silk AND Zhirin

Jpec07 - July 14, 2005 07:46 PM (GMT)
I'm gonna go ahead and sign up for this recruitment thing (only hesitantly). Mains does seem like something to strive for, but at this point, I haven't fully decided if I want it or not. In any case I'll try out just to see how I do. It's not a bad thing to keep your options open, is it?

Recent Quest:
Shattered Souls - Not my best writing at all, but then again, not too bad for a first quest.

Registration:
See signature (and watch out for chrush).

Voucher:
Fuzzhead

Permission:
Granted

Seeing as how I'm already in a quest, would it be possible for me to go on this quest without getting the rewards? Thanks in advance.

This would be the same reason Ashura pulled out. I know the rules of subs are you may be in two quests so long as one of them isn't graded. However, those aren't the rules of main (except certain circumstances) and as such we do not wish for those to be the circumstances of the recruitment quest. Now. If you can get it done by the time the recruitment quest is starting, that's fine. The point though is to see how you can do in a main-like situation, and having two quests at the same time not only divides your attentions and splits your efforts between two topics, it's not a main-like situation.

See, one of the things we want in mainplot players is the dedication to main plot. if you're constantly half in main and half in subs, there's no point to the dedication, and both places suffer because of it.

Again, if you can have it done by the time ours starts (this goes for any applicant), fine. If you're not done by the time it starts, you'll either have to drop out of one or the other.

The main reason I was asking that is because I have heard that if you're in the mains, you can have a quest going in both mains and subs so long as you forfeit the rewards from one of them. Personally, I feel I can multi-process well enough to generate quality posts when there is need for them - even if I am having to shift between half a dozen storylines.

Oh, and just in case my argument has been in vain, when will the quest likely start?

You can have a quest in both main and subs, BUT permission to do so is generally restricted. Important clan quests are usually allowed, but that's about it. Solos are generally done on the main board, certain backstory-related quests with non-mainers are sometimes allowed n subs, but for the most part we want main to become your focus. it's fine if you have friends outside the mainplot membership, we can't tell you not to; however, some things in story make it hard to do anything with them. Because the mainplot players are almost always on one quest or another, we spend very little time in any root towns (even less coming soon) and the chances to go questing with anyone else are, well, quite limited. This is all not to mention that the hacker organization, as well as the administration and possibly other factions as well are all semi-activly or activly hunting us.

As for when the quest is to start, there's no fixed date. Right now main is in a boss battle, which can take anywhere from another 2-3 weeks to another month or two, possibly even more depending on how smart the people involved are. (most boss fights involved some way of defeating them other than "hit until they die") We intend to run the recruitment quest as soon as that boss fight is over, and run it no later than the end of the following mainplot quest, (giving us plenty of time to test the new recruits) and creating a good opening in the mainplot storyline for new players to enter (and in some cases older players to rejoin)

The 'quest clause' is the reason we're taking our own sweet time with the sign-ups; giving ample notice to everyone involved to finish up what they're doing so they can participate fully in the recruitment.

Jpec07 - July 15, 2005 04:25 PM (GMT)
In that case I guess I'll just have to hurry the current quest along then.

(just a thought; this could be made into a special event, that way anyone who wanted to could participate...)

nighthand - July 15, 2005 06:01 PM (GMT)
The point of it though is to make it as main-like as possible. Main itself isn't a special event, not anyone can participate any time they want to...

Eh, we'll see how it works out. The way we've done it in the past, with the simple review of quests and acceptance based upon them hasn't worked very well, this is a whole new approach. If this still doesn't work, then we'll probably come up with something else to try.

One thing that we look for in main (i'm starting to sound like a parrot now) is dedication. We don't want people to come just so they can power themselves up, so they can claim the glory but none of the work of being a mainer. Some people who join can't handle it, but if they start and leave, it causes disruptions we can do without.

I mean really, is there anything worse than your character relying on the actions of someone else, only to find that someone else no longer posts? A prime rule I tell mainers new and old, is "main comes first."

I'll keep suggestions about it in mind for later recruitments, but for now this is the way it'll be run.

Belisaria - July 16, 2005 01:48 AM (GMT)
Sydofh will Vouch for me.
Sydofh, my clan leader, agrees to let me join.
Quests:
The Morpheus - Current Quest, Almost Finished.
Δ Discovered Organ Market Spiral - Second Quest, Finished
Δ Hidden Solitary Hypha - First Quest, Canceled

I have been waiting for Main to begin recruiting new people for quite some time. I promise to do my best and stay active.

Yuki Sato - July 17, 2005 03:46 AM (GMT)
When will the quest start?

If it starts sometime from at least a week from now, is it possible to squeeze in a quick quest?

nighthand - July 17, 2005 03:51 AM (GMT)
The quest will start when the current main quest is ended, the next one began, or thereabouts. As for when that will be, I'm not sure. Nall's rather absent at the moment, so there's at least a little time before it starts. Ideally we'd like to have a full 10-12 before we start. Also, if you're in a quest when we're ready to start, if you're withing a reasonable time of ending it (a day or two), we can wait. It's all flowing at the moment, really.

Jpec07 - July 17, 2005 09:05 PM (GMT)
Another question just sparked my curiosity; will some of the mainers be joining us on this quest to give it an even more realistic feeling?

Reinier - July 17, 2005 09:21 PM (GMT)
::Pops in cus it's a question he can answer:: Nall and Nights created NCP's to do this, as we (main) will be in all sorts of indiscribable amounts of pain. Anymore information then that would be a spoiler, and spoilers are boring.

~We will be watching your every move, however~

nighthand - July 17, 2005 09:24 PM (GMT)
Reinier's right about that... no actual mainers will be on the quest, but, the story does tie into main as a whole. Again, much more than this would spoil the whole thing, but it should work out well.

Lord Canti - July 19, 2005 01:23 PM (GMT)
Hmmm... I was wondering when this would come about... This is an opportunity that I should not let slip away. Unfortunately, I'm in a quest right now, just started. However, if I'm of any judge as to how long it will take to get this semi-main quest started, I just might be able to cut myself in. No guarentees, of course. Let's just say that I'm interested and leave it at that. Having been a roleplayer for as long as I have, I naturally jump at the opportunity to get invited other places.

Belisaria - July 20, 2005 01:50 AM (GMT)
Well, i just finished up with my quest so i'm free to go whenever the recruitment quest is. Although if it is going to be awhile i would like to do a short solo-quest that should take me at the most two days to do. So if i have time i'd like to do one of those. And if it happens to drag on longer than expected then i can always cancel it or rush it to an end because it is a solo-quest.

nighthand - July 20, 2005 01:58 AM (GMT)
Yeah, at the moment you should have plenty of time for that solo. We started this early to give people who're interested enough time to finish up.

For that I am very grateful. ^_^

(oh and considering the boss fight just started not too long ago, I'm willing to bet it'll be at least six weeks before this thing gets started)

QUOTE (Jpec07 @ Jul 19 2005, 08:44 PM)

Wow.... That it's a long time for a single boss battle. Is that because it's that dufficult or because people post very infrequently or because there are so many people fighting?

Reinier - July 20, 2005 04:45 AM (GMT)
::pops in because it's another question he can answer::

It's taking so long because Nall's a jackass who just up and disappeared. As soon as Nighthand and I take ove-.... uh... um... As soon as we get his number from Gingi, we're going to see what's going on. It would be done by now if he had come back when we thought he would.

Belisaria - July 20, 2005 04:46 AM (GMT)
Haha... Well... Hopefully he gets back soon.

nighthand - July 20, 2005 05:08 AM (GMT)
I wouldn't say it'd be done by now...

Actually, the boss battles typically can take a while. They involve a lot of strategy, simply "beat it until it dies" rarely, if ever, works. -hinttothoseinvolvedcough-

So partly it's failing strategies.. partly it's the absence of Nall... partly it's the lag between people posting (since we only have myself, Lighteria, Zan, Reinier, and Nall in the battle) and so forth.

I frankly can't give a good estimate of the timing yet, because Nall's lack of communication means he could be back tomorrow to move us on, or he could be back in a week. Maybe more, but I'd rather not think about THAT yet... -rolls eyes-

Anyways, it'll be at least a week or two, depending on things. And again, if there's someone who's still in a quest but can end it in a day or two, we can probably wait that long. Strict as the rules can be, we DO want some members out of this...

VirageEmbryo - July 20, 2005 12:22 PM (GMT)
If you're starting in a couple of weeks, then sign me up. Evil hackers here I come!!!

EDIT- I'll look into it for real when I finish my other quest.

you should follow the sign up procedures listed on the first page if you'd like to join in. I suspect it will take some time before it starts though.

I've seen nall on and off on MSN the last week or two, just for your information.

Lord Canti - July 21, 2005 03:11 AM (GMT)
Hmmm... Shugo, I believe you're on to something. Alright! I'm gonna sign myself up anyway, just because it sounds sooo cool... (Actually, I do believe I have a fair deal to contribute to the game.)

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

This sign-up is incomplete, but will probably be confirmable in due time. Bear in mind that if I'm not out of my current quest by the time the trial is ready, I am regrettably bump-off-able. But still, to say I tried is better than nothing, right? Anyway...

Mainer Vouch: Cypher
Clan Permession: KamiKazeKiwi3 gave me the official approval hat.

Quest Links:

In Progress - Dragon Madness

It's going swimmingly, but not completed yet, so here's my previous one...

A Rake Against The Gates Of Hell

This had delays, but they couldn't be helped at the time. My computer died at the time.

nighthand - July 21, 2005 03:17 AM (GMT)
One thing I wish to clairify, the voucher does NOT have to be a mainer. It can be anyone over level 10, either a mainer or a subber (as stated in the first post).

Lord Canti - July 21, 2005 01:31 PM (GMT)
That is true, but I decided to get it from Cypher, anyway, since it was Cypher who reviewed my character here and has seen at least a couple of my quests. So now, I'm ready. You can add me to the list of possibles at your own convenience.

Any chance that I can see the mainer quest?

nighthand - July 26, 2005 03:47 AM (GMT)
Nall's back from his vacation so I'm free to kick his ass if he slacks, so it shouldn't be too long (unless he's avoiding me.)

The current Main quest takes place on two threads, the Quest and the Boss.

The Quest

and

The Boss (ongoing)

Happy Reading.

I'm... in a quest, and I'm not sure when I'll be done.
