Title: To All Old Time TCG Members

Malach - June 8, 2005 03:26 PM (GMT)
I feel this recent spat of "NOOB Bashing" needs to be addressed.

1. There has not been real increase in "stupid, rude, spamming Noobs"

Look at it this way. We used to get 10 new members a week, and 2 out of the ten had issues with spamming, rudeness, etc. Now were are getting 50+ memeber per week, and 10 are spammers, rude, etc. Yes, it is more people, but the percentage is the same.

2. Remember back to when you were new, and you posted something in an attempt to try to fit in, be social, etc, etc. You are not all the best writers, and you all did not read the rules before posting. Now suppose you did that, and 15 members jumped down your throat calling you stupid, a spammer, etc? Wouldn't that tick you off just a bit? Wouldn't it make you want to tick off those who just ticked you off? If you cannot be tactful about correcting ones behavior when they are new and breaking a rule (etc), contact a mod to take care of it.

3. Polls. Yes some of the polls are rediculous . . . but instead of lambasting someone for it, help them edit the poll to something more acceptable. I have done that, and it has worked for a few people.

4. You see someone having a hard time with the board and it's functions, please give them a hand.

Not to bad mouth another board, but what are the biggest complaint everyone here has of the Late CNOC? They are a bunch of snobs, that would ban someone for little reason . . . I AM NOT ABOUT TO LET THIS BOARD BECOME THAT. Also this will get worse, and CNOC folds, and several other boards seem to be going down the tubes.

Please have patience, and if you cannot, don't respond to posts and contact a mod.

gymnast22 - June 8, 2005 05:13 PM (GMT)
Well Malalch, I feel as if I am guilty of doing alot of that, and I am ashamed to admit it, but the truth must be told. I'm glad that you have put this topic up, especially since what you have descibed certainly has happened. But the thing is, you can't deny that there are alot of new members, and the quality of their posts seem to be declining, but maybe it's just me.........

Malach - June 8, 2005 05:40 PM (GMT)
That is the point, we have much more membere joining than ever, so it seems that we are being innudated with members who don't know the rules, but the percentage is about the same.

Z Fighter - June 8, 2005 05:42 PM (GMT)
Maybe there should be a rules and regulation test before anyone can join! or post!

Well, the thing is, I believe that your percentage is wrong, despite what the percentages were in the past. I believe that most of the people that are joining are younger, and are more immature than they have ever been, just due to age. Now I am not saying that they will always be that way, because when you think about it, we were all like that at some point in time. So I can understand what you mean when you tell us to give them a little slack. ;)

Malach - June 8, 2005 07:27 PM (GMT)
I understand yourpoint, but I can back it up this way, we have had much less official disciplinary action (warnings and bannings) 800 - 1200 members, than we did from 400 - 800 members in terms of percentage of discipline to members.

chugborbin - June 8, 2005 08:26 PM (GMT)
its all how you look at it...the fact that all of us were n00bs one day is totally incomparable and irrelivent because of the fact that when "i" was a newbie back some half a year+ ago i was one of the ONLY n00bs...it was highly unnoticable and i didnt cause a hecktic spur of bizarre and worthless posts....i kept to myself for a bit and kep under control til i made some friends...

the problem today is as malach addressed...the factors have totally changed for the worst...there are some 20-30 noobs at a time and they stick together like a wad of marshmallows in my pocket, on a hot summer's day, in virginia, on the beach.....in the sun...(thats enoguh comparison :P)

and the major contributer is the population growth...and the fact that noobs are more common among new joining members...hopefully becauseof the cnoc closing siome of those members (not managers) who KNOW how to post and act at a forum like such will join here and show a better reputation off for TCG.

(Edit: i think retirement among MOD's here would be a good idea...for some MOD's who never even show their face here...maybe appoint some new mature people here who can keep things under control to be new MODs...not dissing tcg's modship or anything of the sort...just an idea so that worthless spams and wrongplaced topics should be deleted/ moved more often. Also much more reluctant...the fact that posts sit there for people to waste their time on them is horrific in my opinion...and the fact that memebers arent getting banned that should be banned...if someone has a "1 scam" history...they shoul, dnt be here...the trash here is bad enough....the scammer population as well as n00b is afoot as well.)

Malach - June 8, 2005 08:43 PM (GMT)
And my point is . . . I rarely get PM's from members indicating issues. I cannot be in every forums all the time, and if someone is breaking the rules, point it out, I will definitely take care of it.

As for scammers, you know us, you need to show us hard evidence that someone is a scammer.

and doing that will be a pain in the behind just as pre registration is. And if someone is not good at taking tests?

TOYI1SOCCER - June 8, 2005 08:55 PM (GMT)
what if we put a disclamer when people join? you know like the

"I accept the therms" click here... "No I reject the therms" then don't join lol

When I get a PC program a window asks me if I accept the therms...
so same sort of thing

uhh I NVM I am not sure if people will read the rules that way, cause I myself always click "I accept the therms w/o reading them sometimes " ;)

it sat something to the effect: "I agree to abide by the rule of Invisions Free and the rules of the particular board I am registering for . . . blah, blah, blah"

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH ALL OF THAT.

No one can deny the fact that the amount of annoying noobs has definitly increased on this board over the last couple of months. And yes, as you have said, they do tend to stick together and attack some of the other veteran members and so forth, which should not occur.

And I do agree with what you said about the mods too. I mean, it's not like the mods have not done their job right, it's just that they aren't on to actually DO their job. So yes, I think it is a good idea to update the mods, inhopes of keeping the noob growth and noob problems under control. :D

The most recent newbies have been pretty bad. I am just as guilty as everyone else in the bashing. I understand what you are say but some of them don't want to listen. They think just because they post a lot they are not new.

They need to learn and I think more need to be done. Example in the (To all new members) topic I think we should reopen it , show example of what not to do (Don't show member name of course, just giving example), and then close it.

Naruko - June 8, 2005 11:20 PM (GMT)
I pretty much hate these noobs as much asd everyone else, maybe more :P

Mainly, im alrite with everything ese they do but in the voting poll, thats just lost now, you gotta admit, the polls are getting pointless and stupid.

We should just make them take a "rules" test before they join as someone mentioned earlier

no, but i would suggest a special'sticky' guidelines for polls thread. as malach stated, a little guidance is all that is needed here.

TheUnknownSeries - June 8, 2005 11:37 PM (GMT)
Maybe mods and some members can put the link to the rules in there sig. If they feel like it.

Well okey we all were new at some point and made bad things to get attention(I know I did)but it was never as bad as it is now. I think that the new members should get some kind of restraint over them untill they learn not to do stupid things that annoy people to death.

lil puar kahn - June 9, 2005 01:10 AM (GMT)
one program i got on my computer made me check if i read the terms, and stuff like that. Well im guilty for the fact that i usually just click through all that stuff. But in this program it wouldnt let me go through unless i had scrolled through all of it and spent at least say 5min scrolling. This made me read some of it at least ;)

Also i think some of the n00bs that are coming here are trying to post as much as they can to "be cool" or something and have alot of posts beside theyre name. I find this annoying because ill see a wantlist and 3 people will say they used to have this toon or that one but they sold it. Or they will say they got scammed or some other thing that i find annoying. As many other people have said, it doesnt matter how many times you post just what you post about and if your contributing to the board.

Thats fine, but does anyone read the rules, of all the boards I am on, this is the only I have ever read the rules completely on.

You guys missed the point of the whole thread . . . this thread is not about complaining about new members, or the issues with them, or solution to "fix" noobs . . . it is about how everyone who posted here treats other members.

Malach - June 9, 2005 02:32 AM (GMT)
And you know what, you can accuse me of giving people a lot of leeway, I will be the first to admit, when it comes to sophmoric, and stupid posts, I do. I like to let noobs figure things out for themselves. And most of the stuff being complained is stupid, sophmoric, dare I say Teenage stuff. There are not many complaint about profanity, pornography, and such stuff, why, it gets banned ASAP.

I see what you mean, and like I said, I am guilty of not being patient with new members of late, and in the past as well. The thing that just ticks me off though is when new people get on here, make posts that are either inappropriate or simply stupid, and the other members and I give them advice or warnings about their posts to keep them out of trouble. So what do they do? THEY LASH OUT. Those are the instances when we are ACTUALLY BEING NICE, and they come back fighting, accusing us of insulting them and/or being stupid ourselves. THAT is what makes me mad, and that is why I am biased towards noobs, and I hope that now you have at least a decent idea of my standpoint.

I can think of some things to do that might help with some of the problems that have been stated, so if you want my input, then I would be happy to post it, and try to help improve the board. :D

Ok this is also a issue, when you post stuff like this for all to see. What purpose does it serve than to get under the skin of a new member? I get the feeling a lot of people feel like I am singling out, well there is also a pinned thread just for new members like this.

Now I am not saying that they will always be that way, because when you think about it, we were all like that at some point in time. So I can understand what you mean when you tell us to give them a little slack. ;)
