Yes, we are, as you have just touched upon a pet peeve of mine.
The term mentally retarded is a diagnostic term to diagnose a person with a mental disablity of a IQ of 70 (give or take 10 points)or under. This person also has to show deficiences in 2 or 8 essential life skills as quantified by the Americans with Disabilites Act of 1990.
Using the word "retard" or "retarded" to describe something stupid is an insult to persons with disabilities. It is akin to using the "N" word to decribe a person of color. To retard something or describe something as bening retarded mean to slow it down, or prevent.
Please think before using this word. This has been a Public Service Announcement from Malach Equality for all Persons, a 501 c3 non-profit.
