I am working on getting my own computer for my room, and I need some tips on good quality computers. But I can't spend thousands of dollars cuz I don't even have a job. The most common brands I know are Dell, HP, Gateway......Compaq(I think that is part of HP). Please help me, and like I said, I prefer e-mail. My e-mail is

I don't like emachines. And I only know one other person that has one.
TheRealNapster - November 27, 2003 04:17 PM (GMT)
is emachines a brand of computer?

yeah i know someone who has one.. i dont know what she thinks of it. i know i dont care for dell cause it kinda feels like a toy computer for some reason. hp and gateway feel more like serious peices of equipment to me :) if i wanted a computer and dident want to spend a lot i would maybey ask a collage around you if they had any old computers that werent being used that they wouldent mind selling to you cheap,(it would be funny if you got an old mainframe or something  ) otherwise id try second hand stores or maybey garage sales. still whateer ya get i dunno if your gonna get windows xp on it since i think it takes a ton more RAM than a real cheap or free computer would provide. i have a computer in the garage that has a hard time with windows 98.

I have a n emachine as it were too :P
I run Gentoo Linux, all the packages are downloaded from the internet
I do a weekly emerge -u world
overall, dont take a brand pc
Compaq sux, I used over 116 compaqs and only 40 of them still function properly after one year.
Dell isnt bad, but you cant put in it what you want either (same with compaq) just choose your own components :)

Isn't Windows Longhorn coming out in 2005 or something? You're going to wait a couple of years?

TheHawgMaster - November 30, 2003 02:49 AM (GMT)
You could probably build it yourself, It's really easy and if you cant figure it out libraries always have plenty of info about it.
TheRealNapster - November 30, 2003 05:34 AM (GMT)

Dells suck(partly becuase my dad works for mpc (www.mpc.com) they make awesome comps and computers are actually easy to build.

You mean assembling a computer, right? I don't think you can build your own motherboard, processor, etc. easily by yourself.
TheRealNapster - December 5, 2003 01:23 PM (GMT)
see that's what ive been thinkin when yall say 'build'. i thot yall meant building the WHOLE thing. lol :D
