Title: Opus: Conservative or Liberal
Description: Is the comic character Opus, Dem or Rep?
lonelygirl - January 9, 2006 08:35 PM (GMT)
In the Sunday Comics, Opus is obviously a politically oriented cartoon. But the question is...is he a conservative/republican stating his point of view, or is he a liberal/democrat making fun of the conservatives/republicans?
ih8censorship - January 9, 2006 08:46 PM (GMT)
why would anyone make fun of the people that are right for the mostpart? ive never read opus though...
dr voodoo - January 9, 2006 09:03 PM (GMT)
What's actually th difference in meaning between "republican" and "democrat"? I know that they are ued by different parties but aren't they actually synomyms by their meaning?
lonelygirl - January 9, 2006 09:17 PM (GMT)
republican and democratic actually have very different meanings...the usa is actually a republic because true democracy equals majority rule/mob rule
Republic:
Function: noun
1 : a government having a chief of state who is not a monarch and who in modern times is usually a president; also : a political unit (as a nation) having such a form of government
2 : a government in which supreme power resides in a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by elected officers and representatives responsible to them and governing according to law; also : a political unit (as a nation) having such a form of government
Democracy:
1. Government by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representatives.
2. A political or social unit that has such a government.
3. The common people, considered as the primary source of political power.
4. Majority rule.
5. The principles of social equality and respect for the individual within a community

dr voodoo :the republicans and democrats arent really what their deffinitions are as far as im concerned, they both seem to have taken a common middle ground. I suppose this is good so we (people in united states) as a nation dont go too far to one side or the other. I think the main differences between the two parties today are various morals that each party displays as a whole, and how one party wants to make something illegal while the other wants to keep it, so i personally vote based on my opinion on what should be done. Last election i actually voted pretty much all republican (voted for one independant) and i didnt even know half the people i liked were republican till voting day when i saw it on the ballot.
AquaFox - January 17, 2006 09:22 AM (GMT)
I think that's a liberal judging from his magazine LOL.

FrozenKnight - January 18, 2006 12:18 PM (GMT)
we need a 3rd party that actually is smart. the perfact democary would be mostly ruled by the middle class. but the middle class is relitivaly small in the us. Democrats only help the poor and republicans only help the rich. which only decreses the size of the middle class by forcing them eo become poor or go for the long shot and become rich. it is extreamly difficult to remain in the middle class. becasue the middle class has the highest tax percentage of any class. with extreamly few government programs to help us, and the poor live almost identical lifestyles without all the hard work. and the rich have so much money that the intrest gained alone is most cases is enough to live in hte middle class easly with no work at all. that leaves the middle class to hold most of the governments weight, no wonder it's dwindling. the us needs some reform and we need it bad. and the 2 partys in office are just stupid idiots which need a moral review, and probably a pay cut.

AquaFox - January 18, 2006 10:08 PM (GMT)
Oman depends on our Sultane. Although after this Sultane passes away I hope a good one will come. Otherwise this country is meat.

Depends on how you see it. I don't see a lot of differences between the parties over here. What they say depends on if they are in the government or not. If they aren't : lower the taxes => more economic growth => more money for the state. If they are in the government : economize + higher taxes => reduce credits. It really doesn't matter at all which party rules.

Not every monarchy is governed as one. There are a lot of states that have a monarch who has only a representative role.

paying taxes helps keep our country running, and while it may be questionable how well our taxes are distributed, without them we wouldn't have schools and roads and libraries and all kinds of things.

obviously you would know more about your own country than i would, but according to wikipedia you do pay taxes
"Administratively, the populated regions are divided into 59 districts (wilayats), presided over by governors (walis) responsible for settling local disputes, collecting taxes, and maintaining peace. Most wilayats are small; an exception is the wilayat of Dhofar, which comprises the whole province. The wali of Dhofar is an important government figure, holding cabinet rank, while other walis operate under the guidance of the Ministry of Interior."

did someone just get pwned?
AquaFox - January 20, 2006 03:42 PM (GMT)
Well Wikipedia sucks. We pay no fucking taxes. Goverment have partnerships with big buisnesses around here and the other way we're funding it is through the oil we make.. NO TAXES.
*PS Wikipedia pwns but the Oman page isn't right*
ih8censorship - January 20, 2006 07:48 PM (GMT)
hm thats interesting i have heard about oil funding governments but i didnt know it was true. Makes sense though. guess you didnt get pwned after all :P

to me that sounds like a setup for failure. imagine having buisnesses like ms or sony having partnerships with your country. pretty soon they would start trying to demand more and try to run teh country themselves.
but hey if it works it works, no taxes must pwn
AquaFox - January 21, 2006 09:11 AM (GMT)
Oman are thinking about their Economy if the oil goes bye-bye. We might thinking of that tourism shit or something  .. Go google for Blue City in Oman.

hm thats interesting... but what i dont understand is who would want to go to the middle east for a vacation  unless that whole area over there isnt really as violent as our media portrays it... although on second thought a vacation of "paintball for real" might appeal to some crazy people...
its a good thing this is the off topic forum eh? look how much we got off of the original topic! not that i really care otherwise... i remembre one in C++ help that went from someone asking a normal question to someone mentioning something about a robot ripping peoples arms off and it was still sorta related to the original post

Middle East isn't violent. Americans are >:(!!! In Oman we leave our cars outside, leave our gates open we don't even lock our doors because there ain't as much violent as the west. The media DOES NOT portray middle east as violent at all, in Palestine it's Israel who are violent, in Iraq it's teh Americans who invaded the country for a false assumption..

lol i leave my truck outside too... like everyone i know does (unless there worried about not being able to start it easy in the morning... youd be surprised how hard vehicles start when its really cold) and almost no one has a gate at their property and odds are its open lol. my boss even leaves his keys in his cars. but then again i live in a rural area so that might make some difference....

bowling for columbine you mean? Micheal Moore is a ignorant, biased communist as far as im concerned.
Neken - January 22, 2006 07:02 PM (GMT)
AHAH !!
Communist !?
What wait, and here in canada we are communist too ? 'cause we don't all have guns ? 'cause we aren't so a right-winged country that supports big corporatives and let the poor die horribly of a unavailable-without-money health care system ?
You can't deny that it's your country that has the most number of murder by guns each year, that is the home of KKK, that most houses have a gun in (hell, it's in your constitution !), that the criminality rate is one of the highest of the developped countries, etc, etc, etc.
If you deny all this, i easily see why you think of Moore as a communist (where did you get that, i don't know) and YOU are the biased one.

communism some times looks like a better system than we have now. i'd much rather have the governemtn try to make sure everyone is equal than a bunch of large companies controlling my life.
communism isn't allways have to be a bad thing, its just no one has ever pulled it off and been successful.
remeber the winners allways tell the story, imagine if we had lost ww2, the view point would be just the opposite right now.
