I'll be 19 in exactly 2 weeks

Damn, is everyone really that young? Wish I started earlier. I've been programming since I was 15.

aab - June 14, 2005 03:20 PM (GMT)
Im 17 and i started at the beginning of this year (Agh...so Late....)

FrozenKnight - June 15, 2005 04:49 PM (GMT)
You guys worry too much about age like it's some sort of competition who was younger when they started programming. I don’t remember what age I was when I wrote my first program
CODE
10 PRINT ha sucker!
20 GOTO 10
was being used by everyone in the school, but i was the first to read the help file and get the program to use mupital random strings with alternating colors at random locations on the screen. (I think it was some sort of primitive screensaver) (That was in 7th or 8th grade) the only problem i had with getting started in programming was lack of readily available resources. As I found more resources starting with CES (a game hacker site) and later this place i became better at programming and started to actually understand what i was doing. And for those of you who think these 12 yr olds must be genus programmers I’ll just inform you that they mostly just turn out basic programs until they hit the higher grades or college level because they don’t understand the math required for the better programs. 2D programmed require algebra or algebra 2, 3D programs require trig.
So quit measuring yourself by how old you are. Age has nothing to do with how good of a programmer you are!

Well, age can work in your disadvantage... like you said 3d programs require higher level math, and most 12 year olds haven't taken taken algerbra 1. So I guess you could say the older you are the more potential you have to do more things, so don't be ashamed of your age.

It is not a competition. It's just better to learn when your young and start early.

FrozenKnight - June 16, 2005 12:32 PM (GMT)
Sorry about the jumping around. (I need to quit posting when I’m tired)

What I meant was that it looks like some of the programmers here seem to have the impression that these 12 yr old programmers are geniuses or something. Seeing 12 yr old programmers is natural in an era where computers are more common than cars. But I still haven't seen too many 12 yr olds turn out very pretty or useful code yet. a few of them do occasionally, but only a prodigy would make an truly useful program at that age.

The simple fact is that programming is related to math and you need a level of math skill that was only taught in high school when i attended. Now I’m not saying these 12 yr olds should give up but they should at least try to understand that the code they put out will be heavily scrutinized and if they did manage to make something that is useful then many will be jealous. And that talking big also isn’t a good idea.

I admit I get a bit big headed. But I don’t see programming as others do. I see it as an competition to make the best possible programs that operate as fast as possible. And after seeing the speed and size of ASM programs I kind of found I preferred that language.

I have that whole jumpin around problem when i'm not tired lol and when i'm tiered and basicly all the time tis the season to be jolly fa lalalala la la lala in june
this is probabley an old topic someones probably gona tell me to stop reviving old topics but reviving an onld topic is like giving life to the dead and u shouldn't stifle a gift like that. right?
