i installed the windows xp pro

Was your computer Windows XP Pro before you fdisked?

Incubator - February 28, 2005 05:24 PM (GMT)
1) do you have the correct drivers for your IDE/Mobo/CPU installed?
2) Did m$ windows work on your pc properly before?
3) it doesnt matter wether it was on the hdisk before you fdisked
4) did you run a memtest ? memory could segfault, or cpu could too

http://www.memtest86.com/

5) Does your mobo and BIOS support APM/ACPI ? if not, you'll have to use the power button

Shackleb0lt - March 1, 2005 02:35 AM (GMT)
oh yeah! Same happened to me! Make sure you have donwloaded all of the Windows updates, cuz Windows XP has a vulnerability in the Remote Acces thingy that makes your computer get a virus without u making anything(somtimes 5 minutes after windows is installed). However, the computer should shut down after half an hour of something.... If you HAVE downloaded all the windows updates and the problem doesnt go away, then I don't know what the heck is wrong.

1. Run ClamWin/Spybot/AdAware/HijackThis/etc on it
2. Just wait awhile. XP can take a bit to go down(takes 10min for me sometimes)

Shackleb0lt - March 1, 2005 05:01 AM (GMT)
10 mins to go down? that's not possible! mine has 1.7 ghz processor and it shuts down in 1 or 2 minutes. (There was a time when it took half an hour, as I said, but Windows updates fixed that :D).

Incubator - March 4, 2005 08:03 PM (GMT)
1 - 2 minutes? pfff waaay too long :P
my gentoo box boots in less than 30 secs (and needs to load many services such as a web and ftp server etc)
and shuts down even faster

Amd Athlon 64 2.01Ghz here

Shackleb0lt - March 4, 2005 08:21 PM (GMT)
yeah, well, the point is not my lack of good aproximations, but the fact that he's comp doesn't turn off....

IllegalEnzyme - March 7, 2005 01:54 PM (GMT)
easy solution - don't use windows!

Consumed - March 7, 2005 07:38 PM (GMT)
An even easier solution: It's called the switch on the surge protector(xp takes over the power button). NT seems not to mind it afaik, as it never complains when I do it. :D

Shackleb0lt - March 9, 2005 12:12 AM (GMT)
you mean pressing the power button?

IllegalEnzyme - March 9, 2005 12:27 PM (GMT)
yeah, i unplug mine for a couple of seconds and then plug it back in - it doesn't complain. damn xp takin over the power button - it should do what it's damn well told i'm the one that can think for myself...

*rants about how m$ made windows too clever for its own good!*

*takes some deep breaths to calm down*

C-Man - March 9, 2005 02:59 PM (GMT)
hehehe , i have a manual powersuply so ... windows try to take over that !

C00L - March 9, 2005 05:37 PM (GMT)
just unplug the computer from the wall, xp can't control that... yet

C-Man - March 9, 2005 05:50 PM (GMT)
hmmm Good old sledge hammer , Xp sure can't control that

donprogc++ - March 9, 2005 06:04 PM (GMT)
lmao
CODE

  O         <---- CMAN
\ | /---[]  <--- sledge hammer
  |     [ xp ]  <--- XP

C-Man - March 9, 2005 06:14 PM (GMT)
I'm alergic to windows ... why am i using it ? .. i'm even more alergic to slow performance <_<

donprogc++ - March 9, 2005 06:18 PM (GMT)
so you are saying windows has fast performance?

My computer boots in less than half the time yours takes to shutdown ;) And I have an 850mhz Duron :P

C-Man - March 9, 2005 07:44 PM (GMT)
the guy definaly works faster (using win2k btw )
and plain old FAT32 is faster then those fancy journaled Fs's :/

Shackleb0lt - March 9, 2005 09:20 PM (GMT)
look, it's not like I have counted the nanoseconds my computer takes to shut down! it was just the first number that came to my mind that was lower than 10 mins.

IllegalEnzyme - March 10, 2005 09:51 AM (GMT)
hehe, sledgehammer, it bet bill gates will come up with some kind of force field to stop you doing that.

C-Man - March 10, 2005 10:37 AM (GMT)
yeah he's allwasy looking for ways top protect user from theyr own stupidity

IllegalEnzyme - March 10, 2005 03:06 PM (GMT)
i'm always looking for ways to protect me from microsofts stupidity!

Incubator - March 11, 2005 04:09 PM (GMT)

IllegalEnzyme - March 15, 2005 12:18 PM (GMT)
