Title: remember math class....
Description: very general tip
ih8censorship - November 25, 2004 08:50 PM (GMT)
for those of you still in gradeschool/highschool, REMEMBER MATH CLASS. i always had a hard time with math class because i never knew what a lot of it was really good for and i just kind of stuck it in the short term memory portion of my brain and forgot about it. and that would explain why i spent 2 hours trying to figure out how to do something simple, and then i had to go to one of those math sites to figure out the equation.
in case anyone wants to know what i forgot how to do i forgot how to figure out a percent :o   :ph43r:

yeah its easy untill you forget how

per-cent
cent = 100
per = out of
So 4% means 4 out of 100.
So the word "percent" contains all the information you need.

I also realized that you need some intelligence to do some c++ problems.. but it all ends up in Math intelligence B)

That's one of the MOST inportand formulas for graphics... and you forgot it?
well, your not alone. we all try to forget math class right?
BloodGhst - November 29, 2004 08:10 PM (GMT)
I have found math to be really useful. That is, until the world inverts itself and I spend five hours trying to figure out why.
seanbob11 - November 29, 2004 08:14 PM (GMT)
Thanks for that.....It's nice to know that maths is usefel for something :D
BloodGhst - November 29, 2004 08:20 PM (GMT)
Imagine writing a program... and coming along something like this:
| CODE |
float sx = (float)((mousex-25) / LINE_WIDTH) / 450.0f;
|
That's straight out of a program I'm doing for work. I've also used calculus, geometry, and algebra.
donprogc++ - November 29, 2004 11:26 PM (GMT)
Yeah at my highschool taking a Programming Class
counts as a math college credit
I cant take programming classes as a freshmen
but i am going to take it next year though :)
Yourself - December 3, 2004 07:11 AM (GMT)
Yeah, there was this one time I remember. There I was, fingers deep in the code's a** and I realized that I needed to make use of the basis for the eigenspace of a particular quare matrix.
Actually, I'm lying. Code doesn't have an a**. Seriously though, linear algebra rocks.
invisionfree does have a TOS agreement ;)

It also helps if you've had the class already. Otherwise it's kindof confusing also

I never went to high school... and I don't really program... but I sucked at my college algebra. I think if I would have had algebra in high school that I understood, I would have been able to get through the college level a lot better. I'm thinking about taking a Physics lab instead of a biology lab... but... I don't like math, but I do like physics, go figure.
C-Man - December 7, 2004 05:14 PM (GMT)
well physics has alot to do with math mostly with algebra :P
Jesuslovesme - December 7, 2004 06:04 PM (GMT)
I know what physics is :-p and I'm trying to say my hatred of math is dim in comparison to my hatred of biology and physionimy. So.. I'd rather take the physics lab. Plus, it being a lab means I'd get to do more than just math problems.
C-Man - December 7, 2004 06:36 PM (GMT)
wish we had a lab but all we have is physics :(
MonkeyMan - December 7, 2004 07:17 PM (GMT)
I want to take physics class... I hope to maybe next year! I just am interested.. and I love math. I just got 103% on a test. Sweet! How the heck did I get a A in history class though?! :o Usually it is like F or D... man I love this school. B) Better then my high school.

Jesuslovesme- maybey you could take some sort of computer lab. thered still be math involved, but i wouldent think itd be near as complex as the physics lab. or you could take some more of those CIS classes you were so fond of, maybey they will teach you how to use windows media player next time.
*pictures Jesuslovesme at her computer coding in ASM and then click run and then puzzled why it doesnt work and then posting her coding problem here in the other languages forum*
actually i think at least a general knowledge of physics is importent to coding games.
C-Man - December 7, 2004 09:10 PM (GMT)
yeah espetialy for writing game engines

Err, not so much. Physics is more tightly connected with calculus and trig than anything else.
C-Man - December 7, 2004 09:27 PM (GMT)
well idk we do alot of mucking about formula rearanging and stuff not sure how it's
called never could remember the names

eek, I hate experiments. As to why I'm doing mathematical physics at uni... No one knows....
ih8censorship - December 8, 2004 02:15 AM (GMT)
i liked science experiments. still do but dont really do much (well lot of experments with code)
i remember my parents would get annoyed at me cause i was always doing some experement or another from a book or bill nye the science guy.
BILL BILL BILL!
Jesuslovesme - December 9, 2004 11:01 PM (GMT)
I've already taken my computer labs... now I need a science lab :-p
and I'm not touching anything gross...
Whispher - December 14, 2004 04:32 AM (GMT)
...wow. THanks a lot guys, Im homeschooled, so when my mom is gone, I cheat in math. I wont do that anymore! I need to learn! :) Though right now, Im doing stuff like 4x = 2x - 16
P.S. Im in 8th Grade. :P
iSamer - December 14, 2004 06:00 AM (GMT)
For me, I'm learning triples integrals and differential equations....
Well I ever use these kinds of mathematics ?? ;)

Wow, that's a hell out of a major, MATHEMATICAL PHYSICS...!
What will it help you in your life??? Geeeee....... :P
C-Man - December 14, 2004 06:34 AM (GMT)
i'm learning things like parametric equations , vector math ect things you can actualy use
ih8censorship - December 14, 2004 02:03 PM (GMT)
Whispher- Jesuslovesme and myself were also hom skoold (thats the way i like to spell it hehehe) however i was only homeschooled from 8th grade to the end of high school. she was homeschooled from the beginning from what she tells me.

Eek, am doing those as well. Had an exam last week on some of that, think I completly failed that tho. And will you use those? Depends how much physics you want/need in whatever you might be programming (thinking towards computer games physics engine here or actual scientific modelling). ;) :P
Gmakermaniac!!! - December 15, 2004 09:38 PM (GMT)
I'm only in algebra 1, but I already know some trig! I just learned even more today after saying after school.
aab - December 17, 2004 07:05 PM (GMT)
Physics has alot to do with Calculas, which is the sum of all high school math.
if you dont like math, theres little reason that youll care for the work involved in many areas of physics..
Done Integrals and Parametrics up until now.
I've just done Differential eQns, getting into the rates of things. Were moving onto imaginary numbers after the (school) holiday.
I Love Maths, and i'll not forget it.
I dont understand how anyone can forget something like calculating a %... if you have an understanding of ratios (at all), then you have nothing to remmember, it just works itself out..
The good thing about me and programming, is that i have enough understanding of maths to do nany type of calculation on my own (ie: no lessons) withought having ever seen the code ie:no matter how long it takes, i can eventually work things out on my own. By this i mean things like eg in games: enemies doing things, moving about. acceleration, gravity, vectors..
what do you mean by Triples?
as for Calculas: its used in Games beleive me, even withought noticing it can occur.
Say you had a shell, shot from a morter (or the Giant Blue Plasma launches in Halo), up into the air; Its increase in y coordinate (decrease if doing 2d) begins at a certain value, and then decreases until the object hits the ground, although it will never go beyond a terminal limit.
its gradient can be used as a variable, say if it were to hit off a ship, or a wall, and you wanted it to bounce off realistically with some realistic speed, it'd be a combination or your physics and maths. use m=tan(angle) to find out its current angle (as well as using the walls angle to the x-z axis) and then use this to find out its reflected angle. m would be found from its tangents (at its current point in time) x and y, which is its rate of change of y over x ie the dy/dx thing gets introduced.
Thats a pretty simple example of using derivatives in programming, but all it'd really be is that youd have an x speed (which would decrease by a small amount per frame), and a yspeed, and as speed is change of distance with time, your gradient would be as simple as m=yspeed/xspeed;
its still calculas.

Good Point aab :)
Im taking Advanced Algebra2
Math is my strongest subject it helps me in programming stuff just like what aab pointed out
ih8censorship - December 17, 2004 11:59 PM (GMT)
i think a lot of why math helps programmers (other than the basic formulas) is that it teaches you to think in algorithms and not just thinking in something thats like 1+1=2

Same as it sounds. Integrate the thing three times :D (There can be changing of variables, order and all that, but at the end of the end, it's still integrating the thing three times) ^_^
aab - December 20, 2004 06:43 PM (GMT)
Is that in terms of integrating by parts (an then having to integrate the integral found in the original integrals solution, and then do the same for its solution)?
Or is it just integrating anything thrice (with some evil purpose such as finding some staright lines)?
KTC - December 20, 2004 11:52 PM (GMT)
Well okay, the method I was talking about was I think one of two ways of computing double/triple integrals. Either way, it's when we have functions of more than one variables. Each time you integrate, it's done in respect to a different variable.
One of the thing about it is that you can consider it an extension of integrating between two points to found out the area under a curve. You can use it to found out the area of a surface, volume etc.
For example, to found out the volume of a sphere, the equation to describe it is a function of 3 variables. If you do a triple integral of 1 using polars (it's easier), you'll end up with (4/3)*Pi*r^3.
Jesuslovesme - December 21, 2004 04:13 PM (GMT)
Ya, I was homeschooled since preschool, first day in a classroom was my first day of college, but anyway... I started trig in 6th grade, but in 9th grade stopped in math all together. The curriculum we used sucked, actually I had algebra in high school but I cheated and sucked at it, lol. Hence the reason I got D's in my algebra in college, but I got an A on the final which made a B in the class.
Anyway....I don't know anything about programming and you guys are making my head explode. So I'll just jump back over to the off topic forum.
