You should start small with little console apps and work your way up from there. This forum has lots of good links to tutorial sites posted and the C++ Tips forum has some good information as well. Most of us use the free Dev-C++ IDE that uses the Mingw32 compiler. You can find it at
www.bloodshed.net, though there are other good free ones.

Here's a list of some C++ compilers, though not all of them are free:
Dev-C++ (IDE, not compiler. It comes with the MinGW compiler system)
Borland C++ Compiler
Microsoft Visual C++
Digital Mars compiler
Cygwin project
DJGPP

And I strongly suggest getting yourself a good book on the subject. It will help a lot.

I suggest you check out
http://www.cprogramming.com. It has some good tutorials that are great for beginners, plus the site has quizs that you can take to see if you are learning anything. The site also has links to compilers and everything else you need to start. If you can't find anything you like, just search google for something like : C++ tutorials.

And a good text editor is Syn. I'm not sure exactly where you download it, but it can't be too hard to find.
