"The close approach of Mars during August 2003 is truly a special event indeed. I've seen a lot of hype and misinformation being circulated and because of that I have decided to post the details of this approach and lay some of the misinformation to rest.
In August 2003, Mars will appear larger, and it will be closer to Earth, than it has been for many millennia. The last time Mars was this close to Earth was in the year 57,617 BC, so it's been almost 60,000 years since Mars has graced our skies in this way. The next approach compariable to this one won't occur until August 28, 2287, so this is by far the best year to observe Mars in our lifetimes.

Mars will be at its closest to Earth on August 27th, at 9:51 UT (Universal Time). This translates to the following times in North America.

Eastern Daylight Time, August 27th at 5:51 AM.
Central Daylight Time, August 27th at 4:51 AM.
Mountain Daylight Time, August 27th at 3:51 AM.
Pacific Daylight Time, August 27th at 2:51 AM. "

hm, i couldn't see it. well, unless it looked like a star i couldn't see it. everything in the sky just looked like stars. they said it would be next to the moon or something, but i couldn't even see the moon... =_____="

anyways, I saw mars last night. It did look like a star, but it was easier to spot because it was much larger and brighter than all the other stars. Though for it to be actually larger than the other stars is absurd because stars are much larger than planet and also are naturally much brighter because that is where light comes from. It only appeared larger because from our point of view it was closer and the brighter because most the stars, aside from our sun, are not even in the Milky Way galaxy and therefore seem less bright because the light has to travel such a long way.
