Title: Parents and Anime
Description: How do your folks react to anime?
BrightFox - July 27, 2003 11:26 PM (GMT)
What do your parents think about anime? Do they tsk at every little insult? Make fun of the voices the characters have? Do they sit down and watch it with you? Cheer at the fight scenes? -^^-
My mother will make fun of it at times. It's all in good fun, though, she dun mean any of it. She understands my obsession and we end up getting along. She'll even make nice comments now and again! And notice things, which can be very creepy....
catrlcatrlgirl1 - July 29, 2003 12:01 AM (GMT)
ahhahahah this is a very good subject indeed.=P its like educating my mom....she know nothing about anime...but one day....i started humming the theme song to tenchi muyo!..and she came up to me and said.."isnt that from tenchi?"....;_;..it was soo beutiful....and then i was listening to kenshins opening and she said " thats from that re..r.e.....re...o something kenshin.."...wow! i think their getting smarter everyday...-cries of excitement-..there growing up sooo fast.

I wish I thought this up....
My parents think anime is stupid and that I am immature because I watch it. I just remind them that it has better acting than those stupid soap operas they watch and a better storyline too!
My mom likes to make fun of all the characters names because she can't properly pronounce them. My step-dad will occasionally watch them, but he doesn't like them much. Or so he says...
Tsukasa - July 29, 2003 02:47 AM (GMT)
My parents think Anime are "Childish Cartoons". Cheryl, about your mom, that ws funny XD.
yoh - July 29, 2003 01:15 PM (GMT)
my parents...they annoy me...they want me to stop watching anime...they say im beggining to be addicted to anime...am i???
*bought hundreds of VCDs of anime, posters, and stuff*
:D im not an anime addict!
BrightFox - July 29, 2003 02:11 PM (GMT)
-^^- My Mum is a good sport. She still keeps making fun of the Japanese voices, but she has realized there's no getting me off my anime high, uh-uh, nosireeBOB! She gave up years ago....heh heh!
Hailin - July 30, 2003 01:42 PM (GMT)

.::Forgotten Tear::. - July 30, 2003 08:42 PM (GMT)
mine just wanna switch over to corrie or antiques road show when i put anything anime on XP they think its either to old or young for me.
L33T_N1NJ4 - July 30, 2003 09:31 PM (GMT)
I really don't watch anime infront of my parents for a few reasons. One, my dad can't get over his stupid mentality that all cartoons are for kids. It's closed minded people like him that make anime hard to get here. And another reason is because of the content of anime. Boobs, butts, panty shots, lots of sexual stuff in general dosn't really classify itself as "family material" so I watch it with my bro. It's also a shame that the anime people are so pervy cuz it's hard to find a good show that dosn't have all that stuff in it. I mean, sure I like it, I'm a guy, but damn it gets in the way sometimes. Thankfully the giant robot genre has little in it muahah.
Jae Hoon - August 1, 2003 08:36 PM (GMT)
My mom and stepdad really didnt care, they let me watch it if I wanted to. My stepdad would even borrow my hentai from me and animes like Ninja Scroll.
~Swords~ - August 3, 2003 01:11 AM (GMT)
My parents make fun of they hair and eyes but my dad watches dbz with me sometimes...he doesnt understand it though and my mom used to get mad at me when i watched anime but now she doesnt because she like yu yu hakusho ( she actually bought a dvd of it)
Bolt3 - August 3, 2003 01:20 AM (GMT)
Well, my parents think I should get out more, but oterwise don't care at all! I just love how much privacy I get...
japangirlcmw - August 3, 2003 05:29 PM (GMT)
lol...i love this topic..well, both of my parents have somewhat different opinions... my mom has accepted my obsession, but whenever i buy manga she cusses me out like " thats a waste of money!!" But other than that she ok with it.
My dad just plain hates it! its cruel really...my mom says he doesnt but i can tell that he does...well yeah..
Starwarriorzero - August 3, 2003 05:40 PM (GMT)
My mom don't like it at all, and my dad always keeps a mocking running comentary during one (the main reason I do not let him watch with me). I just don't let my parents watch with me cause they don't like it.
Kagome - August 3, 2003 10:41 PM (GMT)
My mom doesn't care about anime at all, she doesn't understand it. My dad just thinks anime is childish cartoons that I'll grow out of.
Snee - August 4, 2003 02:33 AM (GMT)
 When I used to watch Dbz ( <_< ) My dad would make fun of the dubbing (Stupid Toei!!!) and act like people in godzilla.
Redstorm5 - August 10, 2003 07:26 AM (GMT)
For some reason or another, my mom's not too fond of anime series--she's even insulted the animation of a few of my favorites (DBZ, for instance). Although, I've had much better luck getting her to watch anime movies: Princess Mononoke, Jin-Roh, Metropolis, and Grave of the Fire Flies have all met with her approval. She even wanted to watch Princess Mononoke once on her own accord--I didn't even have to bring it up! Of course, after having seen all of the above movies, I had to convince her that all anime is indeed NOT depressing. Maybe I should start looking for some "lighter" fare...
Vash T.S. - August 10, 2003 04:01 PM (GMT)
Was trying to explain FLCL to my dad the other night he is all like,"They have guitars coming outta there heads!!" I was like "yeah they do its for...blah blah blah" then hes like "But there guitars!!"
Then one day i was watching inuyasha episode 50 or something i forgot -.- and hes like "Why is there a baboon??" im like "Its Naraku one of the strongest demons alive" then he stupidly says "I thought satan was the strongest" then im like "maybe...." and then he says it again "But he's a baboon!!!"
Kupo!
Redstorm5 - August 10, 2003 06:11 PM (GMT)
But there lies your error, Vash, you were trying to explain FLCL. Nobody can explain that show; I don't think it's supposed to make sense. Of course, that doesn't mean that it's not an awesome show. :)

My parents like to make fun of all the "pointless violence", and my dad likes to make fun of the japanese animation, because when he grew up they didn't have any of these japanese shows.
"We just had those good old american shows. I don't like those japanese cars either."
he says that everytime I watch them or bring them up... My mom and other people in my family don't watch the shows, but love the movies and my parents have watched Princess Mononoke on their own accord. Hence why I quoted you.

I beg to differ. FLCL does have a meaning and it's not what I expected when I saw it fansubbed a few years back. Check it out for yourself

~DarkWolf~ - August 11, 2003 06:23 PM (GMT)
 i dunno how my parents would react to anime....they dont watch it. they're more into old movies....
Angel Of The Dawn - August 11, 2003 08:01 PM (GMT)
My grandmother said it was stupid and she wouldn't ever ever watch it no matter what! I got her to watch it and she is like...I don't get it....its not real....I am like... Nevermind, you wouldn't get it b/c you dont' want to get it! My mom says its okay... she watches it with my little sisters and brothers at night and on school nights she stays up and watches it and tapes it for them since they have to go to bed early....I think that is kind of nice. ^_^
treaos - August 11, 2003 08:01 PM (GMT)
i don't think my parent would have a problem with it though it angers me to near homicidal raget hat they callthem cartoons, but even if they did have some dis putes as to wether or not i can watch anime, i really don't care, if they think they can stop what i do with my time and moreimportantly MY money then they need to re think what reality is,it is my personal belife that family should work on theses bacis rules:
1)Mind oyur own dan business, if problems arise that need asistance it will be given only when asked for.
2)maters of money are simply placed as such, your own money is your to do what you want to with, if you ask for money, it will be paid back.
3)maters of love(ie you dating someone or someone dating you) is NONE of your parents business, life is ment so that you fuck up, and you will only lear when and after you fuck up,period.

That is one big mess of spelling and gramatical errors. Dude, can you please try to spell/puncuate correctly? Also, anime is cartoons to be technicly correct. People really bug out over that little thing but it's the truth. Anime - Animation - Cartoons. Anything animated is generaly seen as a cartoon here in the states. Most people also tend to pronounce anime the wrong way. Sence it is a Japanese word (somewhat. Just shortened version of "animation") the "i" is pronounced with the long "e" sound. It should rightfully be "ah-nee-may".
CloverLeaf - August 14, 2003 06:33 AM (GMT)
my dad's alrighty with it. he just thinks every cartoon is anime now.
my mom didn't approve of it at first, because she read something in the newspaper or somewhere that anime was all about big boobs and hentai sorta stuff. well, it is actually true that most all anime girls have big boobs  , but still. there's more to anime than that. she later accepted it, but does not really support the expensive manga.

i watched godzilla a few days ago. hilarious. ah, movies are so dull without computer generated invaders. then, there's the non match english voices with the lip movement. =________=
~DarkWolf~ - August 14, 2003 06:39 AM (GMT)
well some parents aren't ment to watch anime....especially the ones you watch..... they might make you stop watching it... so thats why i like to keep it between me and my evil sis.... <_<
Redstorm5 - August 16, 2003 02:25 PM (GMT)
Inuyasha: Ah, so you know the feeling, Inuyasha. And your father makes fun of Japanese cars? LOL, I've never heard of anyone mocking Japanese entertainment and Japanese transportation. Is it just me, or does it seem odd that some will openly protest anime series, but will jump at the chance to watch an anime film? Maybe that's just a result of growing up with kiddy Saturday morning 'toons that are usually aimed at the younger audiences, but at the same time having big-budget Disney, WB, and Dreamworks animated features on the big screen that tend to have slightly broader audiences.
L33T_N1NJ4: I didn't mean to say that FLCL was completely without meaning or purpose, I merely meant to say that (and I was speaking from experience) the series is immensely difficult to explain to others, especially when they've never seen it before. I'm sure that the series does have a meaning or philosophy behind it, many anime series or films do. I was just saying that FLCL isn't presented in a manner that's as easy to comprehend or follow as some other series, say, Cowboy Bebop for instance. One can easily summarize an episode of Bebop, as it flows well and tends to make relatively "good" sense to those watching the series. That is, Spike doesn't fight his battles with an electric guitar, no giant flying robots sprout from anyone's forehead, and Faye doesn't hang out under a bridge and hit on her boyfriend's little brother.

That's what makes FLCL so great! :D

My parents really don't care. As long as its not hentai, then they'd probably have a little bit of a problem. My dad actually tried to get me to buy one of each anime shirt they had in Suncoast >.<
I have yet to watch FLCL, but I think I'll tape it once it comes on.
PeenkDemiCrys - October 15, 2004 02:38 PM (GMT)
Well....My mom likes Anime. We both got into it when i started watching Sailor Moon. (Ah the days of Sailor Moon. That was my first anime so was DB But i think DB was my first...Ahh i dun remember anymore. o.o;) My dad thinks im crazy for being 17 and watching 'cartoons' still. But he just shrugs and watches them with meh with out saying anything. My sis sits there and watches and she makes fun everything that she can about it. I just shake my head and just keep watching whatever im watching at the time....But its cool that meh and my mom get along with anime. We are like friends...well...Almost. One thing she is my mom and im her daughter. So theres a boundry there. but we get along great. Umm...I hope my mom doesnt watch Hentai..Thats kinda creep thinking about that...<<; BUT...(Eww) I kinda watch it. xD
munkey - October 16, 2004 10:33 PM (GMT)
My mom thinks its a waste of money what i buy. Then i ask her why she bought some movie only she likes or the millions of romance novels my mom has.... then she sees my point and relaxes.
My dad thinks they are just cartoons so he does not really care for them. he watches them sometimes though.
CCM - October 24, 2004 01:27 PM (GMT)
well my mom is pretty cool she will sit down and watch some with me but she asks me whats that or what happened? and it kinda gets on my nerves. (she is a big inuyasha fan for her age XD)

 My mom took mine away cause she thinks thats why my gades r droping. She so mean but that is not the way to punish ppl for anime. parents could just ask them to..... well parents can just f**k off!!! No i like to teach my mom how anime is and stuff. but it's kewl. she did take away all my anime stuff but i know every thing i have by heart. so i walk around singing the songs. And i get to watch them on the weekends. BUT IT'S STILL NOT FAIR!!!!!! :P
turq_emero - January 21, 2005 08:22 PM (GMT)
My parents make fun of it and try to pronouce some of them wrong, like they call Inuyasha, Inwashem. How embarrassing is that? They even ask like when we're in the car "So, how is that Inwashem series going? Hmmm? Have they washed anything yet? My parents are a disgrace.
Meteorkeeper - March 21, 2005 10:57 PM (GMT)
My parents see anime as a waste of time and money they cant seem to see all the hard work that is put into the making of anime. Every time I come home with a new series I get the same lecsher that I am wasting my money and that I should be saving it for more important things. I guess to some extent they are right I should save more money then I do but I don’t see that happing anytime soon well not as long as anime is so expensive. Oh how we suffer for our pastime.
