Well on a serious note, the most popular anime that wasn't broadcast the way DBZ was, was wither Akira or Ghost in the Shell.

I Don't know about you guys but in my opinion, I think its either Ranma 1/2 or Inu-Yasha. But DB series is famous too.

Akira would have to be one of the more famous anime/manga.
Eva is MEGA big in Japan, it's name is almost worshiped =p.
Ghost in the shell? Maybe here in America, but it isn't as big as some others in Japan. I still LOVE it though. ;)
Naruto is mighty right now... but it's the "new thing" so maybe after it's over we can look back at it and really evaluate it's level of popularity after everyone's gotten over it. =p
Pokemon became a household word around the world... but it's popularity is dwindling... yet it still remains well known in the non-Otaku crowd.
Hmmm... it's hard to say, but in terms of its influence on other titles, how it pushed the boundaries of the genre, and it's popularity at the time (and now) I'd have to say Akira.

Hmm I would haft to say the most popular ones would be DBZ (bla), EVA (depressing), Inuyasha (awesome), Ramah 1/2 (also awesome) and Trigun (unbelievable).
I thought Akera should go in there somewhere but I couldn’t think where.

I think it would be Inuyasha. I see alot of people that really like that show alot including me and plus most people cosplay the characters at anime conventions.

To true but it is really hard to find someone who can cosplay inu or Sashomaru well.
