Will preschool really prevent Children from going to jail?
I think that preschool is not a bad thing but frankly it shouldn't be a neccesity. Come on it used to be 5 years of freedom then 1st grade. Now it's 3 years of freedom then its preschool, kindergarten and it goes up from there. People act like Preschool will keep children out of jail and not going to preschool is like a crime or something. I still think preschool is a good opportunity for kids to interact but it won't keep them out of trouble. Thats up to the parents.

Wee another thing we've been discussing in psycology!
This would be an issue of nature versus nurture. Can early learning programs REALLY impact a child's capacity to learn, or are they born with a set capacity?
Most experts these days say that special programs are ineffective in intellectual development in the long-term. Although it is important to expose young children to stimuli in early childhood (light, sound, speech, movement, physical contact, etc.), they say that above normal exposure is ineffectual.
Preschool CAN prepare children for kindergarden, first grade, etc., but the differences between them and children who weren't in these programs begins to fade as they rise through the grade levels.
Will it prevent little Timmy from growing up to be a homicidal maniac? Probably not. Besides, there is a whole bunch of different influences at work that can change a person's psyche as they mature.
In a related topic, people with a higher general intelligence (g) tend to do better in many fields of their life, including marriage (higher the g, lower the divorce rate), job and financial success, and life choices (those with a higher g are less likely to serve jail-time then those with a lower g)
So, basically, as long as the kid is being exposed to enough stuff (like those light-up singing toys and being read to and played with and being around other kids and such), they shouldn't have a problem entering kindergarden without previous enrollment in a preschool. However, since it's easier to learn social skills in a group setting (duh!), some form of pre-education is probably advisable.

Oh yeah. 4 year olds are gonna retain everything they learned about and use it later in life to keep them out of jail.
>.> I don't believe it. Unless all the preschoolers are like me. xD
'course, who's to say I won't end up in jail someday? You never know.
Maybe their statistics are based on people in a different age group. What if somebody goes to jail when they're like..90? What if a lot of people get thrown in jail when they're 90, AND they went to preschool? wtf then?
I say no. :P

This has got to be so stupid. xD I fully agree with Katie here. A way to effect a 3 or 4 year old child would be to slaughter their mother in front of their faces. They would never forget that. ^_^
I went to pre school, Holy Shit, I don't remember a day of it, except the day I beat up a kid for touching my batman toy.
Unless its major like something I said earlier, no, preschool has no effect I don't think. I think preschool is just something the parent does so they don't have to deal with the child all the time, like a daycare or something.

where the hell did this come from?
kids in preschool cant even think! (hell i can only remember 3 things in preeschool, the slides, the swing, and getting candy for valentines day :D, and turning 5 or 4 XD...i think, i remember my b-dya in kindergarten though)
ANYWHO!
preschool is just an excuse to give more jobs to wonna-be teachers and to cause the states to be broke! (im surious! preschool is just so people can get jopbs and the thousands of dollars out of the goverment)
eh, dont listen to me!
besides....WHAT THE HELL!?

Actually teachers don't make much. Lol I agree that its a place to stick your little bratty kids so you can get a break.

I would like to point out that pre-k isn't ENTIRELY pointless. Kids do learn a lot of stuff when they're little...crude motor skills, speech, crude grammar, social skills, and useful little tidbits about the world (the sky is blue, the grass is green, people get mad when you eat paste, try to color inside the lines even though it's hard, etc.)
Seriously though, it is good for a kid to be in these programs, especially if the parent can't provide an intellectually nurturing and stimulating environment due to job constrictions, etc. It's just that it's only helpful up to a certain point (I think it's around middle school that the differences between kids who did and didn't go to a preschool program start to dissapate). So yeah, won't do anything when you're thirty, but it is helpful for a smoother transition into the school system.

(hehe I was joking)
Yes Pre-k does help but come on its not going to affect kids future much.
